    I'm not even sure how the opinion of one person even matters. I can quote Mao or Kim Jong-Il and claim that represents the opinions of every socialist.

    Americans constitute 5% of the worlds population, yet we consume 24% of its energy.

    Per capita statistics on energy use aren't very useful. Americans are also productive. If your method of measuring efficiency is per capita usage, then places like the favorite Marxist straw man of Somalia (and favorite neocon straw man of North Korea) would rate very highly.

    Besides, "wealthier" is comparative, not an absolute term. You are wealthier than a guy who lives in a cardboard box in an alley.

    It's no wonder to me. It's similar to the argument made that any creative works that went out of copyright protection in the USA can't be placed back under it no matter how the laws are changed. In fact, I think the argument's a lot stronger here.

    It doesn't matter. The 10 year statute of limitations has already expired, and nothing but an unconstitutional ex post facto law can change that. Now, if this bill had taken effect 9 years and 364 days after the debt had been incurred, that would be unfortunate but probably constitutional.

    I had wondered why people like President Obama kept tax returns over 10 years back. Politicians know that the Constitutional protection from ex post facto laws doesn't mean squat when the executive branch is involved.

    I've also had them unilateraly apply tax credits that I wasn't legally eligible for (thank heaven I can't be held liable for their mistakes... yet).

    Are you sure? If you call their help line, and they give you incorrect advice, you are still liable for any underpayment, including penalties.
