But your examples of copying are not zero sum. Android is valuable despite copying the iPhone, it's different enough, and more importantly it grows the market in a way that Apple wasn't going to. And if companies fight for market share by making their products more valuable then this is not zero sum either, it's zero sum for the competing companies, but extra value is created for their customers.

War doesn't have to be zero sum either. If it's a war over land and resources then yes, but if it's a war over political ideals then no.

I also have to agree. Actually Gnome was fine for years, I never got on with KDE, tried XFCE a few times and it was okay, but I preferred Gnome 2.x, does everything, looks okay. Until 2010. Why are they so determined to move us away from the layout that works to something new? It's not just a case of copying what Apple and Microsoft are doing, it's like they're trying to do one better and failing, and things KEEP changing.

Now I'm using OSX. It's fine, not as great as mac users make out, but fine, does everything, works ok, looks okay. So, same as Gnome 2.x.

Now people will say "oh you can just install this that out of the repos, you can configure it to look how it used to", but I don't do that anymore, I just install with the defaults and get used to them so I don't have to remember what happened later on.

Surely the opposite is true. If you want companies to reinvest as much money in the business as possible then you want capital gains tax to be very high. This would work fine if it were not for the way these global companies operate, moving the money around the world. If you could say "we're going to tax all your profit made in America, as worked out by us after doing a global audit", then there'd be more incentive to have less profit, and instead create more wealth by reinvestment for a time when taxes might be lower.

And of course all countries should do this, but for most governments they might be worried if they tried that game the businesses in question would just leave (can't see it happening here in NZ). But I don't think America has the same worry. If those companies did up and leave one of their biggest markets someone local would step in and all would be sweet.

Apart from the fact that copyright violation isn't the same crime as theft, I don't see why this isn't exactly the same logic as seeing a really big expensive car and getting quite upset that you can only afford a shitty little car, therefore car theft is justified. People don't seem to think like that though. Is it the difference in cost (it's only $60)? Or is it that its ok to do it to game companies, but not other people?

You can do everything you can do on OSX on Microsoft Windows, or Linux, and there are other choices. And people are willing to pay those prices to get machines running OSX, so there must be some value add (even if it's just the warm glow of belonging to the Apple cult?). Who cares about the components inside it.

To use a car analogy: I have a Toyota Echo. It's not very nice to drive. But it does take me everywhere I need to go, keeps me warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and it goes and can exceed the speed limit. I'd rather have a (insert favourite car brand/model). It'd be much more expensive. But it can only do the same stuff, going at the speed limit it can't get me anywhere faster. It's just nicer to use. It isn't overpriced, it's just more expensive.

And granted they seem to be trying to prevent people upgrading laptops using off the shelf components. But that's still not an indication of being overpriced, just an indication of evilness. They don't have a monopoly on Laptops, so you can still buy from someone else if that makes you unhappy.

  14. Re:not only evil on Is Apple Turning Into the Next "Evil Empire"? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I don't think they are overpriced, after all they don't operate in a supply/demand type chain. Apple sets the price based on the development, design and manufacturing costs, plus whatever profit margin they want. If they were overpriced then a lower priced competitor would come into the market and take some market share... like Android has done quite successfully with smartphones, except that the market is not yet saturated.

As for their other stuff, well personally I like their computing equipment enough to think that it's worth the extra you pay (and when I priced up my macbook it was actually cheaper / on par with the competition). On the other hand an iPhone is overpriced for me because I don't see the value in what it does, same with the iPad. But for plenty of others it's obviously not overpriced. If they try to control OSX as they have iOS, then I'll move to Linux if it doesn't work for me, and they'll lose my custom.

I really don't like what Apple are doing in the content space with walled gardens etc. However, that doesn't make them overpriced. Evil perhaps, or maybe just normal corporate. I don't think Anonymous are the weapon to use here, and I didn't like the tone of your comment, people are allowed to buy into Apple equipment and services if they choose to do so. Try your wallet as a weapon instead.

Their contention ratio is about 80:1, so every single evening the internet slows to a halt. Luckily there is competition, I'm on Telstra clear cable, which is better (but not great). Hopefully Telecom will be forced to do LLU soon so competitors can actually install their own DSL equipment. I hear its pretty dire at the rural end, and without government subsidies I can't ever see it being profitable for ISPs to extend their networks to these areas.
