1. It could never survive reentry. If you didn't care about that:
2. It couldn't carry enough rocket fuel. A 747-400 Freighter has a maximum cargo capacity of about 113,000 Kg. The shuttle main tank carries about 700,000 Kg. in fuel to get the smaller, lighter shuttle into orbit, and it has two booster rockets to get it started. Before you ask about putting boosters on the 747, one booster weights more than the a fully loaded 747 does - it couldn't carry even one.
3. The boosters take the shuttle up to 150,000 ft. The maximum altitude for the 747 on jets is somewhere around 30,000 ft. The boosters take the shuttle to somewhere over 2000 miles an hour, (couldn't find an exact number), the 747 only flies at about a quarter of that.
There are various plans in that vein though, one to use a large jet to basically tow a large rocket behind it, then cut the rocket loose to blast into space when it's at the jet's maximum altitude, and another one where basically an empty rocket plane flys up to max altitude and is then filled with rocket fuel by a flying tanker. Neither plan has gotten very far yet. Both are discussed here: http://www.sweepsclub.com/space_launch/vehiclespec s/
We will be complaining about the idiots that voted for him and supported him while he wrecked our world reputation, our economy, the environment, the supreme court...
What if this becomes the next battleground for console makers?
What if MS realizes that they can write and untraceably release a Trojan that would kill Playstations? Who would stick to a certain console brand if it kept getting infected after every few weeks of online play and you had to keep exchanging it for a new one? How long could Sony stay in business in such a situation?
If you were in a multi-billion dollar battle how far would you go to win?
Dude, relax. I think you are too touchy on the subject and are assuming the worst when you see the word.
Look at it as in we now have a computing environment (including idiot users) that is capable of weeding out the weaker computers; those that aren't strong enough to deal with the emerging threats while being manipulated by their users. If a species (brand/model) evolves to meet the new challenges (Trojans in this case) and still successfully competes with other systems in the marketplace, it will continue and prosper and more of those systems will be born (manufactured) with the new traits.
If a system is flawed in that its architecture makes it susceptible to threats and can't evolve, it will die; (individually from the Trojans in this case), and as a species (due to failure in the marketplace). Who would want to buy a system that might be destroyed by a passing Trojan when there were better options?
If a species (Nintendo) dies in the marketplace and no new ones are built because it could not evolve to meet new threats, while other species (PSn, XBox) survive and multiply because they did evolve to meet the new threats, doesn't that sound Darwinian?
Regarding your other complaint about the misuse of the term Darwinism, I would be willing to argue that an evolved trait to care for your young after they are born and thus the need for continued survival of the parents could be crucial to the development of a species. For example, I may pass on great genes to my offspring, but if I don't survive to rear them and teach them they won't survive on their own and those genes aren't going anywhere. Another individual that has genes that allow him to survive long enough to raise and train his offspring will have those genes continue to a third generation.
I believe you are being far too strict in your interpretation of the concept. But then again, IANAB.
The Sun Opterons will run Linux, thats not proprietary.
TFA is about hardware, not software. What OS Sun runs on their servers is irrelevant to this discussion.
Quoth twiddlingbits yet again:
The hardwre implementations of such multi-processor are proprietary unless they are use PCI-X as the backplane to interconnect the processors, memory and peripherals.
I don't think that you understood the word 'proprietary' in this context. Sun's technology, as well as (IBM's, SGI's, Cray's, etc.) is something that they each independently developed solely for their own company's use. They do not share or sell this technology to third parties to enable those third parties to build their own large multi-way servers using that technology. That is why their existing solutions are called 'proprietary'. It has nothing to do with if the bus that they use to connect the components is based upon some published open standard, whether that be PCIe, HyperTransport, or one that you think defines 'non-proprietary'.
The two companies listed in TFA have developed solutions specifically to allow third party companies, whether they be Dell or ASUS or someone else, to build and sell multi-CPU solutions without developing the CPU interconnect technology themselves. That is why these new solutions are not 'proprietary'. They are not kept only for the private use of the company that developed them.
But the Sun solution is a proprietary solution. This article is specifically about chips that will allow NON-proprietary solutions that Dell or ASUS or ABIT might be able to build new super servers with. And as another poster already pointed out, SUN already has large Opteron servers. Hopefully this will allow these types of servers to become cheaper and more common, encouraging more software to be written to support them.
They basically used the Enterprise a fish tank to carry some whales back to the future. Well Scotty did some stuff with transparent aluminum, but..., geeze, and I'm not even a real Trekkie.
Sorry, I should have quoted. I was trying to ask what the heck Geekoid was talking about when he stated "Except AMD is full of lying thiving bastards."
(soomgeek mutters under his breath 'That's why I posted the stupid question as a response to his post, not as a response to yours....')
From now on I will try and clarify exactly what question I'm asking and of whom when I'm dealing with threads that contain old geezers like you...:)
I must have missed that press release from Intel. What are you referring to?
I personally applaud and support AMD for bringing competition to Intel and dropping the retail cost of processors to a fraction of what they used to be, but on the other hand, I would like to know if they are truly some nefarious company?
I am interested in any evidence that you have to backup your statement but I am afraid that I will find that I have just been feeding another troll. Oh well.
They don't have to develop multiple resistances simultaneously because bacteria can and do trade genes for different types of resistance with other strains of bacteria. We are not fighting just one single organism here; your triclosan resistant bacteria can meet my cyclosporin resistant bacteria and 'learn' each other's resistances, and pass both resistances on to their next generations.
(Or something like that. Damn it Jim, I'm a Geek, not a Doctor!)
Also, is there some rule that you can only be attacked by one strain of bacteria at a time?
I will not use products that contain anti-bacterial substances and don't believe that anyone should unless there is an urgent medical need. I would even support a law that forbid commercial products that contained anti-bacterial agents.
Read 'Red Thunder' by John Varley. Fun sci-fi book and he has freeways using your idea, fleshed out quite a bit.

Hi, Tech Support.
Hi, umm, my tombstone won't work.
What?
There's no display on it.
OK, Have you tried rebooting it?
How do you do that?
What model headstone do you have?
I don't know, it says.... 'engraved by...'
No, no, no. Thats just the plaque on the stone. We need the model of the actual headstone.
There should be something chiseled into the back of it with a model and serial numbers?
OK,.... Model HS 4EVR Dragon Plus?
Yep, thats it, ok let me look that one up,... OK, there should be a reset button on the back? Just next to the usb jack?
Got it , they were covered in some mucky stuff, looks like bird...
Yep, we get a lot of that. OK hold down the reset button for 4 seconds and tell me what comes up on the headstone?
Ok..... it's booting! oh.. it its displaying an ad for VIAGRA! You know one of those short graphic video clips they're using now?
I'm sorry, it appears that your headstone has been hacked. Unfortunately you need to bring it back to the mortuary for service.
What?! Do you know how heavy this thing is?
Well, actually that's not the real headache - you're going to need a court order to be able to legally remove the headstone first. Now I can email you the forms or would you like to sign up with our service package that includes gravesite service?
All personal data gathered about you in the course of an investigation (photos, fingerprints, etc.) needs to be returned to you and purged from the law enforcement's database in the event that you are not charged or if you are tried and found not guilty.
I know it's highly unlikely, but that doesn't change that fact that it should exist.
I guess that's a slashdot editor at work. Personally I could see flamebait, but troll? Methinks someone felt personally attacked.
For what its worth, I was serious in raising the question.
I would be interested in seeing if there is a common thread that relates to the dupes?
For Example:
If you came up with a list of sites referenced in slashdot articles, and calculated a ratio for commercial sites paid for by advertising as opposed to sites that have nothing to gain from a slashdotting, how would that ratio compare for the subset of sites referenced in dupes? What if you broke down the numbers by slash editor?
Perhaps some Slashdot editors are using Slashdot as a service to drive page views to sites? If they don't hit whatever the agreed upon traffic figure is the first time around they just repost the story until the desired traffic is met?
They really can't be lame enough to consistently do this by accident can they? There must be some reason behind it. I wouldn't think it would be for the humor, surely that would have worn off by now?
Tell you what then, kill yourself and I will donate a thousand dollars to the science project of your choice. I bet we could get some more people on here to kick in too. Could be a real windfall for some deserving program- think about it - and it only requires one death, not seven!
Is no one else surprised that they are possibly launching this mission on a 13th? I know that there is no real reason to the bad luck that NASA has had with that number, but I wonder about the possible affects of people on the project worrying about bad luck, and that causing a problem?
A self-fulfilling bad luck prophecy, something going wrong because they are worried about bad luck?
WTF kind of moron takes the time to stalk someone on slashdot and to research and write this kind of drivel? And doesn't have the balls to post it logged in and take credit for it?
Hey Coward, get over it, stop wasting people's time. He didn't even mention microsoft yet you are still blathering.....

Right on the first try. ALON is trademarked by Raytheon Company, for 'optical glass' among other things.
What's really funny though is if you google 'detachments' the first hit is coping.org!
Or maybe it's just me....

Define 'one piece'. As long as you are meaning that it lands and the shuttle still looks like a shuttle, I would be honored to take that bet.
If you want define 'one piece' as no tiles falling off, no foam falling off, nothing being jettisoned in space.... thats another story.
