Or maybe it's Robin, Kermit's nephew? Very weird.

    good reply

PNG8 (as opposed to PNG24) is really a replacement for GIF but it suffers from not being able to do frame animation. PNG8's and GIFs normally produce very similar sizes because they use very similar compression techniques. PNG24 does the alpha channel stuff but produces large files and as you say MS scuppered it by not supporting it properly until now in IE7. The only thing that should have succeeded JPEG was JPEG2000 but it doesn't look like that will ever happen (a shame I think).

You nailed it really. This game never ends - there is always the counter-measure. I used to study evolution and you can go back millions of years watching the 'arms races' between insects and plants for instance. Plant evolves poison, insect evolves immunity, plant modifies poison, insect changes immunity. There is always a short term gain though - that's the pressure the drives the evolution. Computer strategies evolve so quickly I find it fascinating. 4 years ago WEP was a perfect solution for WiFi security, now it can be cracked in minutes making WEP ancient history. It's so quick...

You seem to suggest entertainment is value-free which it is not. Nationalistic hubris is clearly represented in shows like these as speculated upon by the GP. I'm not saying there is an over-arching plot to control the thoughts of people it is more complex and subtle than that.

If I can't get a password in three goes I'll probably never get in and give up. What amazes me is how easy it normally is. It's called propaganda. And we all soak it up whether we want to or not. It takes conscious effort to defuse the meanings absorbed especially as we watch TV in a realaxed and passive mode sometimes similar to a state of hypnosis. The average /.'er probably finds it easier than most due to scientific training to put these ideas away, the rest of the population less so.

I can remember when OSX had some pretty bad latency problems with menus too. One of the best parts of the 10.2 (think that was it) update was optimisation to reduce this to near OS9 levels. Given the major bloat of Vista I should imagine some major improvements could be had for the price of some intelligent analysis and coding.

I do agree with the mouse accuracy stuff though - I've always found Windows to be difficult on that point compared to whichever macintosh system. Possibly it's because I've spent 90% of my time in Mac systems I'm used to that, I don't know.

It's an unfortunate but inescapable aspect of human societies that we value conformity above our individual safety.

Although you're exaggerating a little for effect you're right. However, conformity is essential for the coherence of societies and not necessarily 'unfortunate' all of the time. That point is well established in socio-biology. If you took away the very strong drives for conformity society would quickly collapse. Knowing this though, we have to be on guard for symptoms of group-think that are detrimental such as the virtual monopoly called 'Windows'. Actually, slashdot is full of groupthink itself which often annoys me.
