  1. Hoprfully optional and better thought out... on New Longhorn Screenshots Leaked · · Score: 1

I've actually had to do some registry hacking with Windows XP to remove some of this "media integration" garbage (namely shmedia.dll). When I highlighted certain incomplete video files in windows explorer and it tried to grab info and thumbnails and what not it would freeze up and start taking 99% CPU no matter how long I waited. Of course the start menu would be frozen as well since MS apparently can't figure out how to seperate a file manager from the freaking OS. Hopefully they will at least make this useless window dressing optional this time.

  2. Backwards in more ways then one... on DVD-Enabled Consoles Do Better? · · Score: 1

Nintendo is also the least supportive of online gaming as well. MS packing the equipment needed for voice chat with it's online kit was a great, innovative move. Nintendo just wants to play it safe and sit around with it's tired old franchises, not participate in the evolution of gaming.

  3. toilets? on iWorkstations? · · Score: 1

Do these remind anyone else of toilets? Besides the color I guess it's because they seem designed to just hold the computer and not do much else. Actually there is more room to put things on my toilet so I guess they would be inferior even at that.

Desk space is a good thing, legs that don't get in the way is a good thing, not having your scanner on a hump way off in the background is a good thing. These designs utterly suck.

  4. Console rentals no longer eaily available... on Game Rentals Even Bigger Business · · Score: 1

I used to host rather big parties and would often rent a few Playstations and N64's (along with a bunch of games ^^). I would also always rent the console I was considering buying. All of the stores around me (yes, even Blockbuster) have stopped renting actual consoles, however. They claim the new CD based units wear out too quickly for them to make a profit renting them (which I have to agree with since I'm on my third playstation and have heard bad things about playstation 2...)

Anyway, it seems to me someone in the console industry/rental indistry is shooting themselves in the foot. I haven't bothered buying a new console since I can't get alone with one for a good week of testing and for parties I just have some friends bring game loaded PCs to parties...and everyong knows you don't rent PC games. ^^

It looks quite different to me. With the AMD unit both USB and ethernet are built in and on chip, two things none of the Zaurus models have and that I've missed. Power use looks quite a bit better too.

Re 802.11, I hope they never start packing wireless in. It's very expensive and sucks batteries dry if you leave it on. I'd rather they put that extra $100 of the price towards more SDRAM, something you can't upgrade. Wireless should be left to expansion cards which can be changed to keep up with changing standards anyway (bluetooth, 802.11b/g, blah, blah, and maybe eventually one that isn't a disappointment ^^).

  6. Re:Marketing... on The Most Compatible DVD Format: DVD-R · · Score: 3, Insightful

I don't consider the DVD+ companies to have done that well marketing. The first DVD+ drives were RW only, but promised to be able to do R with a firmware upgrade (-this being insane in it's own right. I've burned hundreds of R discs and maybe one or two expensive RW ones which are less compatible for both DVD- and DVD+. Talk about bad design goals). This proved not to be true and a lot of people getting into DVD burning with DVD+ found out they would need new drives. So the DVD+ companies really shot themselves in the foot and generated bad press on that one.

I think all the DVD+ zealots have a lot to do with people rationalizing something they bought without looking into the two formats. -R has always been the most compatible and the cheapest, but if you buy a +R without looking you're going to try to justify your purchase with all the stupid things we hear being said. "Our format is designed to be compatible, while your's isn't." Sure, mine is designed not to be compatible. Geez.

So what's wrong with drugs? Does it harm you in anyway that some of us are able to have these prescribed and make our lives work better? It's not like a doctor is going to diagnose you and then force you or your child to take them. The drugs are there for people who are trying to solve a problem and they are legal and sanctioned by the medical community. That, to me, is a great thing.

There is VNC for PPC, but if your connecting to a WinXP box it's better to use Microsoft's own Terminal Services Client for PPC instead. It's significantly faster, although not cross platform, of course.

  12. Funny, but sad SO error... on Analysis of SuSE Linux Desktop · · Score: 1

StarOffice is intended as a Microsoft Office replacement, and can read and write Office file formats. For most uses, it should be fine, but it does have limits. It is a bit slow, and, frankly, a bit buggy -- some of our attempts to customise it consistently caused it to shut down, for example.

I have the same crashing problem in SO with certain files, I ended up having to save them in excel format to avoid the consistent crash on save they generate otherwise (even going SO format->XLS->back to SO preseved the crashing behavior T.T). Pretty sad, eh? Overall it has met my college/homework needs, however.

I have over 200 burns on my A04 and couldn't be happier (only one coaster from a crash, total). I think most of your problems are from using cheapo princo disks. They are just a scam like silver top, no label CD-R's. Even riteks are miles above. If Pioneer locked princos out it probably saved them tons of reliability complaints.

Regarding the -/+ issue, -R is cheaper and the most compatible. I have never figured out what the +R people have extra, but I'm certaintly not missing it's loss.

  15. Higher Capacity Available... on Hard Drive of the Future: Ram Drive · · Score: 1

A company called Platypus Technology has an 8 slot (allowing up to 8gb) version of this product available. Larger capacity seems the main reason anyone would accept accessing SDRAM through PCI rather than the normal method so it seemed worth posting. Some prices can be seen at CDW.
