It also allows them to block other things they don't like. Blocking their competitors websites is probably too obvious, but if the boss wants to support some issue, throwing a warning about child porn in front of a page will make most people turn back immediately.
Finally, they could do just as well by setting up a department to find these websites and report them to authorities, which would be useful without the problems of accidental censorship.
Stories like this bring us closer to universal, homicidal rage against spammers. Blacklists don't look so fascist now, do they? How bad do you really need the spam countries on the internet?

I agree. I understand why they would like to 'punish' pirates, but infected computers hurt *everyone*./.ers already know that even linux and mac users are affected by major windows viruses. This statistic that it takes more energy to produce ethanol than is gained by burning it is bandied about all over the place but it is *only* valid if you are talking about corn, I'm not even sure that it is still valid for corn.
My very pro-environment professors all see ethanol as a big joke, at least when used as a fuel additive/replacement. They claim it takes almost twice as much energy to create ethanol than you get from burning it. It's just another subsidy for corn growers.

It's not all about capitalism vs communism. Subsidies just need to be applied smartly. They are the government's way of encouraging the market to do what is best for everyone. When used this way, rather than to make your buddies rich, they are a good thing.

Network hardware doesn't need a backdoor, it needs a reset switch. Or you could plug in a console for unrestricted access. If someone has physical access to your gear, they can mess it up anyway.
