Unfortunately it is STILL illegal to download and transfer the unauthorised and fully copied verion to your reader.
So you get the disadvantage of being and idiot and purchasing something you don't intend to use and that does not beenfit the creator AND breaking the law.
Because they had to travel to the office on their own coin?
Because "being at work" is actually "being at work" and that is what you are paid for?
But seriously, how screwed up are the employment laws there that this is even possible??? Coming from another country I have to say - the whole concept of not being paid till your computer boots up is obscene? Let alone this lawsuit?!?
Can you imagine your boss one day saying: "Hey guys. The server is down, so you are all not being paid until we fix it. Just hang around the office till then".
T.O.T.A.L C.R.A.P.
Your unions and government have really failed you, haven't they???
SWG died long before the combat revamp. The revamp was supposed to RESSURECT the game. The final mass exodus occurred after a revamp of one part failed revolutionize the entire game - which was buggy and not that fun. People were hanging out for the revamp only and expecting that it would be far too much of a change. I think there was a naivety about what was wrong with the game - combat was only one part that was broken. For me, the biggest failure was that is just lacked a real SW feel. There were wookies, but they did not feel like wookies and looking stupid. There were ATSTs, but storm troopers were using them like RC toys..etc.
In that case it really depends on the specific powers handed down to the Czar as to what (S)HE can do. Of course one must remember that the Czar has the ear of the executive also.
If it was to actually come down to "who's the boss" then I would imagine they have not done their job properly. A skilled diplomat never gets to this point in the first place.
Because departments tend to be ultra-introverts and power crazy zealots a "Czar" is sometimes created to cross these boundaries to encourage (and enforce) cooperation to a common goal. (e.g. Drugs, terrorism and now copyright)
It has more impact and is (arguably) more cost-effective than creating a new department to carry out tasks which are the same as other departments. This also assumes that the departments will fail to work together effectively and squabble over funding and power. Sometimes there is a double up. There is a department that deals with drugs specifically, so the Czar's main role would be to coordinate all the interested departments.
It must also be remembered that Math != Economics. China would be able to sustain a far less debt per capita than the US for instance. If your unemployment goes through the roof because of outsourcing and the crisis, your methodology is not sensible. If productivity goes south, ditto. There is a lot more to it and there are some major assumptions there.
Previously, the economics were in the US's favour in this. (i.e. any other country running these sort of books would have been cooked long ago) Debt crisis and world economy looking shaky mixed in...not so sure about that. I guess we will all see sooner rather than later.
On another note:
I can imagine coming home and saying "Honey, I bought a new car. Don't worry, it has only increased our mortgage by 80%"
I should add that my comments on "doing the right thing" were ONLY for recycling efforts. Most NZ companies throw out the trash randomly like everybody else in the world.
The main point was about greenwashing and fake-recycling.
Heard an interesting speaker recently on developing products from cradle to cradle and near 100% recycling. I believe they are starting the initiatives in Sweden. (god I love Sweden...) ref: http://greenhome.huddler.com/wiki/cradle-to-cradle-design
One of his main comments was on how future generations will look down on our era as a sockingly wasteful society. Sort of how we look down on medievil times and their beliefs and way of life.
You may also realise that WE may not be around to enjoy it in a few centuries. I am 100% sure the planet/universe will be around for a long time to come.
Its the USA's waste, it is ultimately the USA's hands that are dirty. (metaphorically of course, the poor B'Stards that get trash dumped on their doorstep are obviously going to have dirty hands literally)
This is yet another example of green washing and corporates (in this case US ones) flushing our environment down the toilet for their own short term gain.
However, it is not just the US that engages in this crap. Lots of others do also! Even here in "green NZ", there are instances of "recycling" companies shipping recycling overseas to the more dodgy chinese outlets. disclaimer: it appears that the majority of ours do the right thing however. (One retail chain even does it FOR FREE! Not to mention E-day www.eday.org.nz )
And these filthy buggers will moan and complain when regulation is forced upon them to stop being little piglets. Sheesh.
Makes one really feel sorry for mother nature to be honest.
I am proposing that we do this to find out if there is a problem. (at least with a 70-80% assurance) Actually, I am saying this is currently happening. And that assurances of many ARE at 70-80%.
To actually fix the problem?? Well most of the rest of the world outside the US are already subscribed to the Kyoto protocol. Research into alternative energry sources is getting major attention. Why not the US also?? (I mean after Bush is gone as it is obvious he is anti all of this)
Again, I am saying that we are already on the way. The only thing slowing us down is the large numbers of people altering the political landscape (via ignorance and/or deception) so that the effort is being undermined.
>Submissions are made to the UN and other international organisations. Independant research needs to be done.
I think the suggestion from this was that the active participation of the uninformed and deceptive in the discourse (and the over reporting of such) is harming the debate. The above is ALREADY being carried out.
>A dictatorship of scientists? That is the sort of politically charged comment I am talking about. How on earth am I suggesting this?
Submissions are made to the UN and other international organisations. Independant research needs to be done. The papers are currently quoting "experts" with no experience in the field as authorities and swaying public perception of the scientific consensus. NASA scientists are being supressed/fired for having a valid scientific opinion. (reports suggest a MAINSTREAM scientific opinion also??) People are laughing at the issue based purely on the fact that they are "anti-green".
Turning it into a "I am green" and "I am not green" issue is not helpful.
If global warming IS a problem to the extent that people are saying, then it will not be a "green" issue. It will be a human survival issue - and I would expect the anti-green crowd are not a bunch of suicide psychopaths?!?!?
It was a flippant comment, although I think what stuck me most was that is mimics a lot of discussion happening around this issue. I notice it is now called flamebait - there your go. Not surprising as the politics of this issue has long since defied all reason.
People are (loudly) calling this scientific and complex issue from their armchair and they have no idea what they are talking about or what is going on.
The problem is that these people vote and politicians are making the most of this.
This issue is FAR TOO IMPORTANT to be handled/influenced by people and special interest groups, whether they admit how clueless they are or falsefy their expertise.
(NB: Aussie and Kiwi users only can drive - sorry, but for obvious reasons of course)
Basically users queue up and control a robot tank with a web cam attached to it. The streaming IS slightly laggy, but very usable for the purpose.
I wrote the car controller etc. Lots of fun and the best dev project I have worked on. Unique challenges and all that. My degree/research just happened to be in Artificial Intellegence - so a nice (albeit accidental) complement there.
The intent for users was very similar to the experience article mentioned (without haptics) and the reaction from users was very positive. The idea of controlling something "real" over the internet instead of just interacting with bytes had great novelty. One could imagine all sorts of extensions to this basic interaction. e.g. "robot tank counterstrike". Other types of robots. Car races.
The most obvious problem with this type of tech is scalability. In the current scenario, users only get a max of 5 minutes each (with secret codes) and this still involves large wait times for even a modest (internet-wise) number of users. Also, with moving parts containing hardware, the issue of upkeep is a lot more problematic. Cars will break down, require maintenance etc. To scale this scenario up is VERY expensive.
Having said this, how many people would be willing to pay for a high-bandwidth/realtime/gaming version of this? Perhaps enough to make it worthwhile?
I think that is the point. If you randomly introduce rubbish into your OS people will mistake the rubbish as just more of the rubbish you deliver to legitimate customers.
Then you develop a bad name for the quality of your product......I mean a WORSE name...
Since Vista is a no go area, they most likely wont even consider upgrading at that point.
Because every camera has a flash and what you are suggesting requires specialist equipment costing a lot of money as well as calibration etc?? (possibly custom/purpose made eq. which will increase the cost significantly)
The article makes direct reference to cost. Hell, you could go laser 3D image if money was no object right?
Here in NZ, agriculture caused the same thing. (these blooms were in very low population, farming areas)
At first I thought that it was obvious in that everybody here knows that fertilisers dumped in the water were the obvious cause of algae blooms and other related water poisonings, but I guess those that do not come from a non-farming community would not.
There are many more poisons being dumped in the water than just this. Mercury for example. Fortunately in our country we are pretty strict about this. (although not enough in my opinion!!)
Unfortunately we have to share our ocean with the rest of the world...damn you all...
This is quite funny. I remember as a graduate tutor discussing how I thought multicore/processor architectures would be the future of the commonly computer system. (not speciallist systems) This was a few years before dual cores came out. At the time I talked about how GPUs were being used to take load of the CPU for a specific task and how this model could work for many other things including on a single CPU. (e.g. floating point pre-calcs etc) He ridiculed me. He felt it was his right since he lectured in the field.
I wish I I could talk to him again.:)
Anyways, there are many application for this but the biggest is on the server side where server nodes typically run hundreds of threads+ on 8+ cores and could always do with more grunt in this area.
Not to be rude or insensitive, but being filled full of chemicals that cause cancer is obviously an alternative method of getting cancer. As is swimming at "Chernobyl lake".
It does not therefore follow that people "spontaneously" getting cancer may not be effected by state of mind. It does not mean that someone can be "Mr Happy" and not get cancer spontaneously also. It all about percentages.
I am sorry your bro died so young dude. That just sucks. Doubly so if it WAS from such poisoning.
This is not that scientifically controversial at all - as long as you are not giving some sort of spiritual reasoning.:)
The immune system has been long proven to be closely linked with stress/anxiety hormones and state of health/well being/happiness etc.
One study I read talked about woman have a 30% (read: placebo-style numbers) better survival rate for breast cancer if they had a positive state of mind.
We seem to have a immuno response capable of nuking cancers. (long suspected)
Putting two and two together this all should not be too surprising at all apart from the fact that we seem to have found an immuno super weapon. (assuming this is not a research hoax to get funding again...like cold fusion)
So dudes. Relax. Vapourise some Weed. (smoke causes cancer) Put on some jack johnson/bob marley. Tell your boss to stick his job.
Unfortunately it is STILL illegal to download and transfer the unauthorised and fully copied verion to your reader.

Just awesome.

Suggested Ammendment:
"Made in China for the US, dumped in China for the US."
I don't know. What is the big deal?
hmmm...Maybe...the 202 billion of electronic exports from china? Sounds like a pretty big deal to me.
Source: http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-07/02/content_8478003.htm
NB: This figure includes information exports, which I assume are a small portion of the total.
Nice try.

(runs off to drum up VC funding...)
What's even more amazing is he starts his post pointing out that he does not know what he is talking about...yet is insightful in some way.
Perhaps about the fact that his insight is not?

I guess version 2.0 of the buzz word was developed too quickly for proper research into existing techniques??
