I'm not so worried about the number however the "auction" method is horrible. It artificially reduces deflates salaries in the US.
It needs to be an auction method where companies have to pay more to reserve one of these spots. Additionally, they need to be required to pay 1.25x or so more than the national average in pay.
Instead these H1B lottery people are brought in at bargain basement prices and screwed over by contracting companies. They're typically low level college graduates and severely affect US salaries in the IT industry
Dav1d is not a codec. It's an encoder. It encodes video into the AV1 codec. AV1 is the updated codec that will replaced last generations version VP9. Just as HEVC/x265 is replacing last generations x264.
I'm a Software Engineer major and my wife an Actuary in the pensions field (Masters in Math), and i can somewhat agree with what you say. She's taken a ton of tests over the years and basically lives in Excel doing calculations and doing what i would consider "boring work". And yet we make roughly the same amount, (however she does make a bit more not that she's official).
But I will say she loves being an actuary, and frankly i couldn't see her doing anything else. It's been a lot of stress and long hours getting to where she is today, but she thinks it's all worth it. I'm not sure why, but for some people, they really enjoy just crunching numbers.
That's good that it's becoming more widely known. However, it's hell becoming certified through all the post-graduate tests and becoming an official Actuary who can sign off on things.
LOL. My wife (actuary on pension plans) LOOOOVED this part of the movie. She perked up from her game of Candy Crush and was so excited that her job field was even mentioned in a movie and was put in a positive/desired light towards kids. She mentions it all the time when this movie comes up.
It's because one thing is something someone DOES and the other is something someone IS. Judging people for what they do is fine, IMHO.
Just to be clear, you're leaving room for "fat people hate" because people aren't born fat. That is something they become because of a chosen lifestyle/diet.
Personally, i don't think harassment is acceptable of anyone...even if they're a-holes. Denounce bad actions/speech by people if you feel it's bad. That should be where it stops. Making their life a miserable hell beyond those actions/speech is where i draw the line.
Right now? It's not practical. But they haven't optimized the encoders, and there isn't any silicon developed for it yet.
It's like trying to play some intense video game without a dedicated video card and using software to generate the scenes using un-optimized code. You're going to have a bad time.
Give it a couple years until the hardware is out there, and we'll see where we're at.
I don't think you understand the support behind AV1 vs x265. Only Apple is going to implement x265 in browser. The others, no. They ALL will implement AV1 in the browser. Netflix will be AV1. YouTube will be AV1. Facebook will be AV1. Amazon Video will be AV1.
The licensing around x265 is a complete disaster. Just about every major media company is going to steer clear away from them where possible. This is a completely different scenario than x264 vs the lesser known media formats.
Bottom line is the difference is support/backing. And it's vastly in favor of AV1.
Damn, give it some time. It was just released. When looking at things like this, you have to look at the backing and support it gets.
Give it a year or so, and see where we're at. This codec is here to stay, and while the encoding speeds are slow now, it has an enormous backing to win in the end.
Are you just a troll or a fanboy, because you've obviously never looked at internet usage statistics. On desktop, Firefox, IE/Edge, and Safari make up 35% of usage. On mobile, Safari makes up 30% of usage. Those are significant numbers.
The "gun" in this case, was nude photos. They refused to "drop" those nude photos and were basically saying "make me. otherwise we'll do what we want" and publish other people's nudes too.
Why do the *verbal* comments requite *showing* a sex type. They could either cut out the audio portion, or simply transcribe them. If Gawker were a TV show, they could figure out how to cover the story without breaking FCC rules. Surely they could figure this out. They were multi-million dollar company.
I hated most of the people that worked there. They were all a bunch of pricks that were full of themselves. And their attitudes were fueled by poor leadership at the top. I'm all for a news organization that gets into the muck of news scandals, but they need to be smart about it, and they need to be run like a professional news organization. And not a blog of writers with teenage quality smarmy writing.
Honestly, they're so big that they'll likely just set up off-shore programming centers in India and not worry about the H1-B visa program. I really don't think it'll affect the corporations TOO much. It will affect the smaller/mid size IT groups that aren't prepared to deal with the hassle of off-shore.
Additionally, they can keep using the magstripe, they just have to take full responsibility for and false charges that may occur at the business as opposed to the credit card company taking that liability. So really, the merchants only have to upgrade if they want to accept CC and be free of any credit card fraud liability. Seems reasonable to me.
Correct. It's the foundation for the new format, but will be enhanced further using Daala, Thor, and Opus.
Considering members of the new OpenAlliance consist of just about all browser manufactures (Microsoft, Google, Mozilla), chip manufacturers (Intel, AMD, ARM, Nvidia), and major content providers (Netflix, Amazon, Google), it's going to be widely supported/adopted quickly.
h.265 might have an advantage right now with the current iteration, VP9, but if the industry has put their weight behind this free Open Source version, you won't see as much of the proprietary encoding.
You realize we're comparing a FREE option vs a PAID option. As a business trying to save money here/there, I'd rather go with the free one to be honest.
Additionally, the title of this post is a bit misleading for what Netflix actually found. h.265 was better than VP9 in 4K content, but when it came down to 1080p and lower resolutions, VP9 did just as good or better than h.265. 1080p will STILL rule the streaming market for the foreseeable future, so VP9 is definitely relevant here.
Quote from Netflix on their blog regarding this:
Here’s a snapshot: x265 and libvpx demonstrate superior compression performance compared to x264, with bitrate savings reaching up to 50% especially at the higher resolutions. x265 outperforms libvpx for almost all resolutions and quality metrics, but the performance gap narrows (or even reverses) at 1080p.
Huntsville has a TON of NASA engineers and supporting cast. Auburn University has sent more astronauts to space than nearly any other university.
Just because it's "Alabama" doesn't mean it's redneck. That's stereotyping at it's finest.
The guy who died likely worked at NASA in the lunar program and possibly even designing the rovers....Frankly, it could have been this guy's: http://www.oanow.com/news/aubu...
People on this site know computers. They don't know airplanes and airplane models. It's like saying the Ford Mustang is being retired comparing sales to a different manufacturer. And then saying "But the Ford Mustang is 50+ years old! You can't compare a 50 year old car to a model that has been out in the last 10 years!"
But if you care, then you are checking for "divide by zero" anyway, and handling it a certain way, right? I don't think anyone WANTS to have their program crash. If a divide by zero is important, then just validate your data beforehand.

Just because a woman is a woman, it doesn't mean she has any background in gender studies or any special understanding of gender issues.
It's just her opinion and experiences.
Isn't that basically what James Damore got fired for?
How much do you pay in patent fees?
Not all laptops come with nVidia GPUs. There are WAY more sold with integrated Intel Graphics than there are with nVidia.
The "gun" in this case, was nude photos. They refused to "drop" those nude photos and were basically saying "make me. otherwise we'll do what we want" and publish other people's nudes too.
So the judge said "Ok..." *bam*

Opus is also in there as the audio portion.
I didn't really mind wearing glasses, but the kicker was paying an extra $2-$3 for the "3D" part of the movie. Screw THAT part of the deal.

So basically theft? Considering that open APs are almost always for people INSIDE those businesses/homes. Not for random people to leach off of.
