  1. Now I know!!!! on Caffeine Vault · · Score: 2

Well now I know to just skip the Coke and Jolt and just stick with good old coffee. I can keep my hands warm in the winter and keep awake plus I only have to drink 1/2 the ammount of coffee to get double the caffine of soda! Its little tidbits of information on the web that make paying 150 DM per month for IDSL access in Germany worth while!

  2. .shop, .news???? on ICANN Has Approved New TLDs · · Score: 2

Will we now have www.slashdot.news as our start page in Mozilla? Will we now shop at amazon.shop? Will we now do anything else different in the way we shop of surf or read news on the web? NO. The current *.com's *.net's and *.orgs will most likely just grab there namesake with a new .whatever and that will be that. I would be surprised if we use any of these on a regular basis in the near future.
Of course, that's just my opinion.

  3. Is this still going on?????? on Penguin Payola: More On "Purchased" Reviews · · Score: 1

Are people still actually upset about this? We all know it is a bunch of crap. So what if Mandrake (or any OS vendor for that matter, Linux, Unix. Mac, Be or Windows) sent free evaluation copies of there software. It should not change the opinion of the journalist. If he/she was a good honest journalist then he/she would be fair and truthful no matter what!

  4. Re:Isn't this a bit useless? on Visual Python 0.1 Loosed · · Score: 1

Well, I guess you could say that netscape composer and Microsoft Front Page and the many other WYSIWYG HTML editors are already hybrid "visual" HTML editors. I am not really that big on visual editors but if someone can crank out code a little faster with one, them let them use it and get more work done.

  5. I am happy about this! on SCO & Linux: If You Can't Beat 'Em · · Score: 1

The first Unix that I used was Linux the second was SCO. I really like SCO. I have been administering SCO servers for almost 2 years now and I think SCO has a good Unix. I have always liked the layout and "feel" of Sys V Unices more than BSD Unices though. I use Linux at home and have implemented it at work also and I really like the feel of Linux also but I have always wanted a Sys V'ish Linux. I hope SCO does that. Lets just hope that SCO keeps things gpl'ed and they play fair. But that's for time to tell........

  6. Its about the kernel and being MODULAR! on What Makes A UNIX System UNIX? · · Score: 1

I think the thing that makes UNIX what it is is this:
ANY of the various Unix flavors all have a UNIXISH kernel. They have all got either BSD or SYSV commands (many nowadays have a mix of both) and thay are all modular OS's. If you take away the GUI from NT, it will not work, If you take X (any version) away from UNIX it will still be the same functional rock solid OS, just with out a GUI. Dont forget that all UNIX variants are supposed to be POSIX compliant.
Of course this is just my opinion.

  7. usin it 4 a while on LinuxMandrake 7.0 ISO Images Available · · Score: 1

I have been using Mandrake 7.0b for a while. There were TONS of corrupted RPS at first but I think that has all been ironed out. This release is a lot like Red Hat 6.1 in that it has the same GNOME style graphical install but like always Mandrake has greatly improved it. They have there own partitioning software in the install and the install goes fairly smoothly, the only thing they missed was a game at the end like Caldera's Tetris (that was a Great idea). There are a lot of good things to say about it but I dont really have the space or time right now, try it out yourself, just stay away from Tucows ISO download. That thing thkes forever, they must have set up some sort of download bandwith limit :-(. Well... have fun.

  11. What about this.... on The Linux Newbie Replies: WFM? · · Score: 1

I know that there is already a Linux web ring but I think that a centralized place (like linux.org) that has things broken down into subjects with links to specific sites that specialize in one area. I have been using Linux for 2 years now and I have yet to see a site like this. I think that linuxstart.com and linux.com have the right idea but each a little ways off. Then if someone could print out a book that highlights the most used areas of that site could: a) make a lot of money b) help a lot of newbies out c) make life a lot less crowded in the newsgroups Thats my $.02

  12. It Works, Somewhat on Opera Beta Released · · Score: 1

Well the program itself seems to run fairly well. It didnt crash on me but it would not let me log into slashdot. Some .jpg images came up looking wierd also. It is gunctional right now though. Goot work Opera, hope the actual release comes soon. It loads much faster than Netscape and of course looks better than lynx. It could be my happy medium.
PS- One more thing, could installation be any easier? Just tar -xvzf (filename) and then click on the shell script and it works! I wish Quake installed that easily!

  15. Why Not?? Father and Son Theory :-) on Gore: White House May Get Involved in MS Settlement Talks · · Score: 1

Why wouldn't he want to get involved. He did, after all, invent the Internet. Microsoft now wants to be a leader of the Internet revolution. It just makes sense that he would want to be a part of it, its like father and son. No, really, the White House should have nothing to do with this issue. They need to just step back and let the DOJ take care of it.
