I started my mmorpg career in december of 97 with a game called Ultima Online. I never thought myself as a roleplayer or even thought id be interested in any roleplaying games. Surprisingly I was instantly hooked. I couldn't put the game down. I cannot think of another game where I actually have fallen asleep at the keyboard only to wake up a couple hours later and continue my playing. What made ultima than so great? The community. One of uo's main points that kept me in the game was the pvp and the long term goals. For example: in that time period it was extremely rare to come across a grandmaster blacksmith. Occasionally one would be setup near the britain smith and offering his service to the fellow players. THIS WAS A HUGE EVENT! Obtaing grandmaster was not an easy feet and those who were gm's were treated as kings. Thats just one example. Another was the unrestricted pvp. You step outside of town alone your likeley to get mugged. When you died everything you were carrying at that time was left on your corpse for free loot (including house keys I might add). So this in turn forced you to travel in groups when ever you left cities or decided to go adventuring! I myself played the role of a PK in an extremely organized guild that was very succesfull. Here is my idea of the next perfect mmorgp:
1) unrestricted pvp outside of TOWNS (NO LAME PVP ZONES, TOWNS ARE SECURED BY GUARDS THATS IT)
2) more important long term player accomplishments.
3) as little npc activity as possible.
The more focus put on the individual player the better. Uo has since evolved into the typical mmorpg. Complete w/ almost 0 pvp and a very "disney" type feel to it. This was not the way it was originally designed. These developers need to grow some balls and start making their games less care-bear-ish. In the real world you can do whatever you want. Yes there are penalties but the point is you can do whatever you want whenever you want. We needs this in another mmorpg!
well not to be a troll but oh well.. anyone that reads/. most likely already knows about this technology. data recovery has been around for ages...nothing new here.
"The whole LAN party scene has been kind of like a geeky cult thing," he said. "These guys are making it more mainstream."
They make the article sound like only total geeks and kids go to lan parties..wtf I originally lived in wa state and found lan parties all over..not everyone was geeks or zit faced teenagers... There are alot of mid 30's-40's adults that attend the lans Ive gone to. I recently moved to arizona this summer and got a job at office max. Turns out they hold a monthly lan with all of the employees and its a blast. Some of these guys barely know how to operate their computer but they enjoy lanning. Welcome to the new age of entertainment...its been around for a while.
The only downside I can see with raid is one main thing for me. After I went raid I couldn't go back to standard ide. =) I know I "could" but it would be a pain in the a$$. Lets say I start to build a backup computer and decide I want to take out one of my 80 gigs and pop it in the new one. Sine my two 80's are currently in a raid I think this would have some seriously messy side effects. Thats my only bitch about raid. Other wise its pretty damn cool. Also my floppy drive is broke so I cannot boot windows xp to install on one of my raid drives. Sucks. Stupid xp -).
"This must be some prestigious organization if a 19 year old is offering to serve on the board... "
I'm 19 years old and am currently CEO of a fortune 500. Guess who I am, and you get a surprise.
Respect is earned, not granted due to age.
Cable companies have been accused of time after time advertising speeds that inactuallity you never meet! Do they get jailed and fined for this? Hell no! But when someone gains a little extra speed on their connection...you get the point. End of story.
OK to all the sladhotters stating "They deserve what they got, they are thieves! plain and simple" TAKE A LOOK AT YOURSELF. I be nearly 90% maybe more of you have "stolen" something regarding computers multiple times. You've downloaded mp3's for sure...for example. How bout when the fbi comes knocking at your door for that mp3 you just downloaded? GET REAL.
Computer crimes like this simply astound me...Its not the physical crime that shocks me its the punishment. What did they do that was so dead wrong? They in essence gained access to some extra bandwidth in which they were allowed to use. Consequences should immediate termination of the account end of story. WTF is wrong with society today. I don't know maybe I sound juvenile but punishment for a virtual crime such as this seems like a total overkill...
Well microsoft is loosing like $160.00 bucks per xbox sold already..why not piss their customers off even more and drops sales even lower. Way to go microsoft!

It's illegal because its being sold as a pre mod, which allows the hardware to be used illegaly out of the box. For VCDS and mp3s. etc.

My hobbit hole might get a little warm with my 4 computers all stuffed into a small, poorly circulated room. but a hobbit hole sounds fun. -)
Anyone else think this whole story is a little "off-topic" for slashdot..-)
This reminds me of an early case back in september...Jon Carwell anyone?

throttling, blocking same difference? NOPE. nice try troll -)
ice reply..before you flame read the statement. who said anything about blocking port 80? New idea! think before you flame?
The possibilities are endless! Except when isps start throttling these p2p ports..doh!
People with "unmodded" machines are being wrongfully banned as well. Happened to me when I hooked up my xbox live kit.
Thus causing microsoft to spend more money on replaced xbox's...nice.
