I know that a good number of people on Slashdot like to think of themselves as Libertarians. And perhaps the Libertarian Party is the one that best supports the beliefs of our community. Realisticcally, I don't think the Libertarian party has a snowball's chance in hell that it will have a major say in politics, not while the GOP and the Democrats have more money and support.

That kind of thinking is PRECISELY why the US has primarily become a 2-party system, and why the barrier to entry for other parties is so high. The world is what we think it to be.

Those of us who believe strongly enough in some basic universal principles regarding freedom and self-determination are willing to stand up for what we believe in. The more of us that make that stand, the more our views will be noticed. For some people it's more important to make a stand for what is right than to "win" at something.

AMD DOES NOT HAVE THE MANUFACTURING CAPACITY TO SUPPLY THE ENTIRE PC INDUSTRY WITH CHIPS.

your statement tries to present the very weak arguement that because amd doesn't currently have the manufacturing capacity to outstrip intel, it never will. that is clearly a fallacious argument. as the demand, and the infrastructure support, for the athlon increases, amd will build more fabs. the one in dresden has already been tremendouly successful and is running ahead of schedule. i don't believe tom's was suggesting that the balance of power will shift overnight, or even this year.

i also think you fail to address the 3 main strength of tom's argument, that (1) the coppermine is near the end of its extendability cycle whereas the athlon will be improved in leaps and bounds (they're already showing off a 1.1 GHz Athlon), (2) for market reasons intel is disadvantaged in fighting in a low-margin arena, which amd (and possibly transmeta) are forcing them into, and (3) intel has made themselves hated by many people in the industry, including many of their top employees that are now at amd.

I agree with you that tom's presents an extreme view of the amd/intel situation, but I believe it'll prove to be a remarkably prescient one. In fact, I'm betting most of my money on it. already since october my amd shares have gone from 18 to 42.

not necessarily. the fact that they are named eToy already shows that they have some kind of affinity for toys, and did so long before eToys. just because eToys shows up doesn't mean they somehow lose their right to display toys on their page. and it's not at all surprising that they'd want to do something related to IPOs as a social commentary/parody, that doesn't have anything to do with eToys.

The judge might simply tell them to stop putting pictures of toys on their site, put up a link to eToys, and go about their business.

for your sake and mine, I sure hope not! a judge has no place in regulating the content of an artist's website in any way, either in saying there's things they can't display there (toys) or saying there's something they MUST display there (a link to eToys).

Taking the site off-line was just a temporary measure until the case was heard.

sure, take their domain down for a couple of months. it's only a temporary measure. yeah, that's fair. maybe to be really fair both eToy AND eToys should have had their domains revoked until the dispute was resolved. now THAT would be a good way to resolve the dispute in a hurry...
