Yep, if there's one place property values are sure to soar, it's areas where the schools are crappy and underfunded. Chicago is suffering from the same suburban sprawl that chokes the tax money off of many U.S. cities.
Well, to be fair, the environment for cities like Chicago, with the corruption, bad school system and other factors, led those people with the means to wisely leave the city, lest their kids get caught up in gang, drugs, or just plain get killed as an innocent bystander....while also getting a substandard education.
Do you really blame people that have the means to move to a better environment for their homes and families for doing so?
Well, to be fair...in Chicago ( and likely in Detroit too), if the said Maker Spaces were used to make zip guns and the like, they might be useful for survival of those unlucky enough to be stuck there.
I could certainly believe this is the case with natural gas, which is as the name implies naturally occurring comes out during extraction, and is still a very cheap form of energy.
Gasoline on the other hand has to be distilled from crude, a process which I believe really only serve the purpose of producing gasoline. Gasoline is expensive, relatively easy to transport, and easy to burn, so I have a hard time believing they ever had an accidental surplus.
Link here - I saw some of this on the H2 channel last night about the "Men who built America". Good show. This is the passage from that page:
Rockefeller's bookkeeping style of entrepreneurship led to important savings where other similar companies had waste. For example, where others had considered the byproducts of refining oil for kerosene as waste (some dumped gasoline in rivers), Rockefeller and his partners founds ways to use gasoline for fuel and tar for paving. Another savings that helped consumers was by transporting oil in bulk quantities via Vanderbilt's railroad company.
Sure it can. A process can generate a lot of some material which nobody currently needs. The manufacturer will then go and look for a market which can use this material and try to develop that market.
That was the case long ago for gasoline, it was a useless by-product for a long time there...it was actually thrown causing some environmental problems, till they could finally figure out a use for the stuff.
You know..the absolute only thing I was hoping that the Obama and liberals in office would do...they haven't.
I was hopeful they'd repeal the war on drugs, especially pot....and put that wasted money to better use.
The ONE thing I thought and hoped they could do...for some reason, have not even lifted a real finger to change the FEDERAL legality....and make this totally a states issue.
Since there is no legally recognized impairment level for Marijuana, and no legally recognized tests, (other than blood draws) either device based tests, or field sobriety tests, its hard to prove the extent to which it is present in accident situations. So if there was a car crash, the police have no real way to prove it was even a factor.
My large question is..."Who cares if it was a factor"?
I mean, if you are in a car and kill someone...they're dead. Unless someone ran YOU into them (another driver at fault)...you have commited a crime.
It shouldn't matter if you were drunk, stoned, sleep deprived, texting or are just a fuckup driver that can't drive well.....they have killed someone.
Killing someone will make them dead, no matter the reasons. It doesn't matter if you were drunk, or just not paying enough attention, the bottom line is they're dead, and now, you have to pay the penalty.
The "lowest common denominator" is the vocal minority who feel their "right" to bring a peanut butter sandwich or wear a particular fragrance to work outweighs the rights of others to come to work without fear of developing an illness, or work.
I disagree...that definition doesn't represent the definition of the terms minority/majority.
The majority of people like to eat freely, many if not most enjoy a nice peanut butter sandwhich from time to time, or like to smell nice. If this wasn't the case, they'd certainly not be making so much selling the stuff.
Why should we the majority have to cater our behavior to the very few minority of folks that have a problem, real or perceived....with foods or smells.
What about foods and religion. Does my eating a ham sandwich offend some muslims in the office? IF they complain does that mean everyone can no longer eat that at their desks?
If you can't live and deal in the real world, buy yourself a fucking bubble, and crawl in it so you won't die when someone happens to open up their lunchbox near you.
While I don't know of any cases involving peanut butter, there are plenty involving perfume and cologne where an employee is allergic to strong smells from these substances and other employees are prohibited from using them at the workplace (or even teachers if a student has the condition). Violation of the prohibition costs one their job. By definition, if you lose your job for bringing the banned substance to work because of an allergy another employee has, you are in fact being held accountable [for your actions].
Are you fucking serious?!?!?
Just because one person has some sort of deficiency or problem that limits everyone else in the whole building!?!?!
Why is the onus on all the normal people, and not on the person with the isolated problem???
Geez, why are we always catering to the lowest common denominator for everything these days?
I've never heard of such a thing, and I've worked in govt offices in the past which would likely be the nutjob jobsites that would try to enforce such a thing....
And well, there's many of us that don't see this being a problem that will seriously affect them in this lifetime...so, why bother? Why do things now that will seriously curtail my current lifestyle and quality of life?
"I'm gonna get my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames."
The problem is, since everyone in the area knows about the issue, the cars are sent to other parts of the country where people have no idea these cars may have been underwater.
Like after Katrina...I'd carfax the thing at least....if you see it was last registered in NJ (or LA back then)...pass immediately.
Statutory annual basic safety & emissions check for any car over 3 years old. There's absolutely no guarantee that a car with a current MOT certificate hasn't developed a fault since it was tested, though - "But Officer, it has a MOT certificate" won't get you anywhere if you're pulled over with a fault.
Ok, yeah..some states in the US require inspections, but not all of them.
I have a rudimentary inspection in my current state of residence, but thankfully, nothing with emissions...so, I can mod my car as I please.
I'd never make it if I had to live in CA tho....ugh!!
Cell phones have already displaced watches. Why? Because they have bigger screens? No, not really. The bigger screen is useful for other phone features, but it didn't really improve much on what watches do best. It's more that most of us didn't see a need any longer to keep two timepieces, so we ditched our watches.
Well, I guess many that only had cheap timex or mickey watches would ditch them, but many folks have nice ones that are not only time pieces, but considered jewelry too.
Some people like to dress nice...and, many women out there, not only notice what shoes you're wearing, but also what other things you have on, like watches, rings..etc.
Then of course there are the thousands of cars which were flooded in Sandy or other disasters which are cleaned and sold as "reconditioned" without telling you their insides are rusting away as you talk to the salesperson.
Ahh...same thing happened after Katrina. Everyone in the area knew to be wary of buying used cars for a few years afterwards down here, wasn't that much of a shock.
As with anything used a little research and buyer beware is required.
I have never bothered to look up his past, but Eric Cantor looks and acts EXACTLY like my mental schema of "used car salesman."
I guess that would cast Obama as the slimy garage grease monkey, working in conjunction with said dirty sales force to cheat the consumer..er...citizen...er...
What were we talking about? The allegory got a bit too tangled with such similar entities' behaviors.
Based on my last experience, we don't have car salesmen in England, either - we have financial product salesmen who push loans, hare-brained leasing deals and dubious extended warranty schemes to people who have already decided to buy the car and are (figuratively, at least) waving the cash in their face.
Do ya'll negotiate the car prices over there like we do here...or is the price on the sticker the price you pay over there?
There is a difference between buying a TV to smash it up and buying a TV to watch it. Just like there is a difference between buying a TV and buying a plow to send to some third world nation.
And, why would I buy a plow to send to some 3rd world country, rather than spend my money to help in my own country ?
Burning Man stands for absolutely nothing other than privileged, usually white people who want to go waste a lot of time while being very conscious of the fact that this supposedly makes them cool.
Yeah...bad time to be a white person. I mean, what are they all thinking...having time off and disposable income and wasting it on themselves rather than sharing it with the more deserving people who are having to do without.
When I was growing up, you got your learners permit at 14yrs, where you could drive with an adult in the car...at 16yrs you could get your license.
I never bothered with the learners permit, and I wasn't really interested in driving till I was 16yrs. But the test was only a written test, and a short driving test which consisted for me, with nothing more than driving across the st. from the police station to and abandoned shopping center, pulling into one of the parking spots in the empty parking lot, and then driving back.
There was no requirement for driving schools or hours behind the wheel or anything.
Hell, I never really tried parallel parking till about 15-20 years after I got my license...never had to really.
Do you never buy cans or bottles of soda or booze? It's right on the can/bottle (e.g. "CA CRV ME-HI 5cents"), and on the receipt, you see the separate charge

Dammit..that changes my entire post
As long as it doesn't hinder, re prohibit MY ability to buy and drive manual cars on the road.
I've never owned anything but 2x seat sports cars, I've never owned a manual transmission.
I like to drive...I buy cars that are FUN to drive.
So, as long as I can continue to drive myself (and I'm sure others do feel this way too)...I'm cool with self driving cars.
I don't want "Johnny Cabs" to become the mandated only option.
I'd think a challenge to that using 1st amendment rights would work, no?
...the wearing of masks in public.
Wow..never heard of mandatory composting cans too??
I rarely sit and read my bottles...
