There is no benefit to me (or penalty) for me to recycle. I get no benefit to trade of for having to have 2-4 different trashcans taking up space in my limited spaced kitchen to sort things out, when I have the convenience of one can now for everything.
If you don't thinks have changed for the better, you're just being stupid.
Yeah, you go on telling yourself that...
See if you can convince all those out of job, losing homes, and seeing their health care cost start to skyrocket, and those lucky enough to have jobs..start getting cut back to 28 hours or so. so as to be reclassified as part time by businesses, having to deal with obamacare.
And it might mean printing the damned recycle numbers somewhat larger than 0.5 mm. I really don't feel like getting out my loupe just to figure out which bin to toss a piece of plastic in.
Are there actually that many people who actually spend the time and effort and keep multiple 'bins' in their kitchens to actually sort out their trash into different categories just to recycle?
I know one person that does this, most people I know are like me...one garbage can...everything goes it in and garbage men haul it all away twice a week.
The 10 cent deposit in Michigan factored into college party etiquette. If you were going to a party and brought your own beer, it was considered polite to leave your empties with the host. If the hosts were able to wake from their hangover the next day, they'd return the empties and have enough for breakfast.
OH wow...I didn't know they did deposits on bottles anywhere any more.
I remember as a kid, gathering up bottles to trade for $ to get candy at the local 7-11 store, but they did away with that ages ago.
I thought it went away all over the US...interesting that a few states apparently keep doing that.
That's what they want us to do, but *after* we've done some of the leg work to actually sort the stuff. Given that so many Americans put garbage in recycling bins with utter abandon, it's really no surprise the Chinese got fed up with us.
Not a problem in my house.
Everything goes into the garbage can...no recycling whatsoever....
I think by reading the context of the parent you answered too....he meant "organic vs processed foods" more in terms of foods that are highly processed, man made...vs foods closer to the ground, ie veggies, fruits, even meats that come more from nature.
I don't think he was entering the organic vs conventional argument on food raising.
Guys, lots of other countries use incinerators for non-recyclable stuff. You get rid of it, and get electricity and heat as a bonus. Modern incinerators are so clean, they rarely even emit visible steam.
Why is the US so allergic to incinerators?
Are you kidding? The Obama clan and the hyper-antagonistic EPA would not stand for such a thing!!
Hell, anything that even remotely isn't 100% green is not only shunned, but actively acted against these days it seems.
Heck, a simple pipeline that would be safe and immediately garner jobs (something you'd think an administration that is starving for jobs creation stats) can get passed.
Obama declared the use of gas to be a "red line", but has already backed away from that declaration. I don't think anyone any longer believes that the use of chemical weapons in Syria is any more of a "trip-wire" than the coup-that-is-not-a-coup in Egypt. It is unlikely that Europe is going to go in without American involvement, and America has decided that flexible ambiguity is more important than credibility.
Fearless leader here in the US, has lost pretty much all credibility in the world. You thought Bush was bad...well, Mr. Obama has proven worse.
At least with Bush and past Presidents, even if you disliked them, if they drew a line in the sand in the world forum, and it was crossed, you could count on action that was threatened.
That is no longer the case and the world knows it.
I don't wanna go into Syria, and frankly, if it isn't directly in the interest of the US, I don't see us needing to be in the middle east at all.
Like I said in another post, I do NOT want to go into Syria....sad, but it is not our fight. However, the problem is, our president makes threats and draws lines in the sand, and now..does nothing to follow up on them.
I guess the rest of the world now gets to also enjoy all the "Hope and Change" that was promised to us by this presidential candidate.
At this point, I'd prefer a president with more credibility and consistency..... like Charlie Sheen.
. I guess now all the bleeding hearts will be chanting for Chairman Obama to "liberate" and "freedomize" the nation of Syria from their secular ruler so we can gain a level headed theocracy in it's place.
What makes you think Obama is going to do anything, really?
He draws lines in the sand....and when crossed, backs up and draws new lines in the sand.
I'm thinking at this point, most of the world will call Obama's bluffs, because he just isn't gonna really commit to anything.
I personally do NOT think we should get involved over there and should start to get out of more conflicts rather than get into more of them. Sad this is happening to them, but not really our business.
But even so...you can't go around as the head of a country, saying "Don't cross this line" and not be ready to back that up with immediate and un-mitigated overwhelming response....otherwise the rest of the world sees you as a pussy that doesn't follow up on your stated boundaries.
I think the main issue is they are adding more HFCS to everything, not less. This is what is affecting us, and it's getting worse as time goes on.
While HFCS is worming its way into SO many food products..true, it can be avoided largely, by not buying and eating processed foods.
Not a lot of HFCS they can put into fresh tomatoes, onions, beans..etc.
:)
Basically, if you learn to read labels, and avoid pretty much the entire set of center aisles in the grocery store, you can avoid a lot of HFCS. Get the raw ingredients and COOK your own food.
I'll enjoy it more, be more healthy, and often if done correctly, you can SAVE money. Yes, save money.
I look through the weekly circulars for the various grocery stores in my area, and I hit usually 2-3 of them weekly when I go shopping. I buy what's on sale and plan my menus for the week accordingly.
But you do have to read labels too. But some food manufacturers are listening. I found the Lea And Perrin's worchestershire stopped putting HFCS in their sauce..and just the other day, saw some yogurt had stopped HFCS use in their products.
I read my bread labels..and choose the ones that are 100% whole wheat, and no HFCS.
In the event that you're being earnest, let's just ignore the racial disparity in arrests, sentencing, prison population and executions.
Well, they *do* seem to commit most of the crimes...I rarely see on TV, video footage of Asian guys committing armed robbery of the gas station, and I rarely hear about a bunch of white guys as the description of the group that forced their way in for a home invasion.
Face it, blacks seem to commit more violent crimes than the other races in the US, way out of proportion of their percentage of the US citizenry.
Few, if any, places cut their own chicken. Other than that, Wal-Mart often has a regional butcher rather than one on site, and there are also some 'brand name' meats starting to spread that come to grocery store already packed.
Hmm..that might do it, I'm not where a walmart with a grocery store is...and the few times I've seen one, I'd not shop there, their meat quality was horrible.
There may be hundreds of packages but there's only a few dozen different cuts. And the retailers long ago figured out how to optimize their display (in types and quantities) so as to minimize the amount that's tossed. (And they then minimize that amount even further by discounting it a day or two before it goes off.) Nor do they store cuts of meat, it's cut (almost universally) on demand on a daily basis. (If it's not cut on site, it either comes frozen or is cut on a regional basis and delivered every couple of days at worst.)
Interesting you brought this up. I didn't know there were any grocery stores that didnt' cut up their own meat and package it? I've never seen a grocery store that didn't have basically windows you could see back into the meat cutting area and see them working daily back there cutting up and packaging meat....and having a little buzzer you can push to ring them and have one come out to talk to you if you want a special cut...
Lol it's bad enough that black people are already disproprotionately executed. Now you want to add a financial incentive to the for-profit prison model by harvesting organs? What could go wrong?
"Whhhhhhhhhat? You're telling me we could be getting paid for executing black people? Where do I sign up?!"
Geez, some people have to play the fucking RACE card at every turn of every conversation.....
People who take lives and have forfeited theirs (if you agree with the idea of capital punishment in the first place) are still humans, with basic human rights. Taking their organs without their permission, or coercing them into "donating" would not pass constitutional scrutiny in the U.S., and would probably be deemed "cruel and unusual."
Err..how is that cruel and inhumane? They are dead when you harvest the organs, they feel no pain then.
No one is saying to harvest the organs while they're still alive...
Hmm...I guess I'm not familiar with this "doorman" situation. Is this like a guard or something for people living in apartments there?
That being said, I guess delivered groceries do well for people that don't cook, and no reheating something in the microwave or boiling in a bag does not count for cooking.
But I like to cook from scratch whenever possible. I'd not feel confident that someone picking out produce, or seafood or meat would pick out the best looking selections, but instead would be looking more to rotate stock so that oldest is going out.
I like to pick up, squeeze, look at and smell my ingredients and get the best I can find for myself.
But I've noticed that so many folks today in the US, just don't seem to know how to cook anymore. Hell, I've not dated a woman in awhile that knew how to cook even, I've had to show several girlfriends how to prep and do food.
Although I think it is changing back a bit and people are more interested in the foods they eat and fix home cooked meals, we have a long way to go on that front.
But no thanks...I'll get my own groceries. I get the best deals that way. I look on Wed. to see what's going to be on sale at the various grocery stores, and plan my route on the weekend to hit 2-3 of them to get the sale items, and I build some of my weekly cooking around that. I eat quite well and don't spend all that much as others do with pre-packaged, processed crap food.
The US Govt is going to pick this up, just in time for the elections.
I'm sure the Prison Corporations will be in favor; as well as all the greedy politicians.
It's not like it's legal, or anything, but Really; when has that stopped them from doing something?
Actually, all hyperbole aside, my thoughts were "why are they stopping this and why aren't WE in the US doing this?"
It sounds like a great idea. If someone is going to die anyway, after exhausting the judicial system (again speaking for the US), why waste these organs that could go to help the many people on the waiting lists?
It seems a waste to lose such a vital resource that could help the lives of many innocent people.
Most people are on death row for taking lives unjustly (premeditated murder, etc), why not use this as a method for them to give life to others?
Seems like it would balance out the karma in life a bit, no?
Well, in that first article...it was lumping all athletics together, which is true...most things like women's lacrosse, or beginning badminton or golf just don't bring in money, they lose.
In the top college programs, football and basketball often bring in lots of money to help subsidize the lessor sports, and I'd not want to argue that athletics in general should be banned would you? Health of the mind is tied to health of the body, no?
But sure if some college is spending more money on sports than they are taking in, they should be called for it and get administrators to fix these books and run the schools in a fiscally sounds manner.
But schools like LSU and others in the SEC, they more than pay for themselves....and those programs also mean more donations to the general colleges too. That type of activity generates excitement for the alums and they do give based on football, etc.
If a school can't afford it, then don't have it...but don't lump all schools and don't lump all athletics as being together in terms of waste or drag on academics.
The USAPATRIOT act is a perfect example of this concept.
The trouble is..once a law actually gets passed it is virtually impossible to modify the 'bad' out of it, much less repeal the whole things if it is found to be repugnant.
That's why, especially these days...It is BEST be very suspicious and hyper-critical of any new laws or legislation that comes up. Regardless of malice, or unforeseen, unintended consequences.....if you let it get passed, it will be damned near impossible to fix or remove it.
There is no benefit to me (or penalty) for me to recycle. I get no benefit to trade of for having to have 2-4 different trashcans taking up space in my limited spaced kitchen to sort things out, when I have the convenience of one can now for everything.

I'm doing my part to keep from burying innocent folks in China!!

I'd always considered the terms to all be synonymous...
What's the difference between them...?

Do the crime, do the time.
Hmm..that might do it, I'm not where a walmart with a grocery store is...and the few times I've seen one, I'd not shop there, their meat quality was horrible.
Why not open goose season for as long as you need it and let hunters shoot them for food?
Interesting you brought this up. I didn't know there were any grocery stores that didnt' cut up their own meat and package it? I mean, the football programs like where I went to school, MORE than pay for themselves, they prop up all the other non-revenue generating sports.
It isn't like student tuition is going to college athletics, in fact from the schools I know. the athletics are subsidizing the rest of the school...
I grew up in the south, I'm talking about schools like U of AL, LSU, the schools in MS...etc.
Is that not the way it is in other school conferences?
I'm not actually a huge sports fan myself, but c'mon if you're going to bitch, at least get the fact right on who is spending who's money where.
I agree it is atrocious what colleges are doing today...but let's be fair about the money accusations.
Certainly nothing that happened in the past that I wasn't directly involved with....
No.
