The St. Paul Pioneer Press went this way last year. Unsurprisingly, participation in the comments has dropped to near zero.

I can see why companies do it - this saves them the trouble of moderation, as people moderate themselves when their real names are used and they conceivably could face real-life consequences for what they post. Is real-life intimidation really the best way to police comments? Certainly not if you want more participation...

Not to mention...not everyone has a Facebook or Google+ or Twitter or...xyz social network account.

I find it interesting that these two sites assume everyone that is on their forums have FB, etc accounts....are there other sites out there following this assumption? The assume you have a 3rd party membership established so you can use their forum/services???

Why would anyone limit themselves based on that type assumption?

But it became a personal challenge. After the first 10 pages I don't think my brain really understood any of it, but when discussing the issue it does give me the ability to say "I've read it, have you?" which generally changes the conversation from the merits of the law to the insanity of how it is written.

Well, apparently, most of the congress-critters hadn't read it either.

I seem to recall Pelosi even saying something to the effect of "We need to pass it, in order to see what's actually IN it...".

Actually, it is perfectly legal for them to ask you about those things....however, it is illegal for them to discriminate against you on those things.

It is VERY difficult to prove that is what they used as criteria to not hire you....and if they don't ask them, even more difficult, hence, they generally don't ask questions about that type of thing.

When working 1099...I pay my own way, I negotiate my rates.

With this, I get a high deductible (about $1200) medial insurance account...(and I have VERY HIGH Triglicerides, so yes, you can get them even as an at risk person)..to be used only for emergencies (heart failure, car wreck).

I max out a HSA I set up, which unlike a FSA it is not use it or lose it..it builds over years and you can invest funds and make money from it to grow it)....I put about $3K in there pre-tax....and use that for my routine medical needs, and low end procedures (I had to have a MRI and paid it myself out of it). Heck usually when I told the Dr's I was paying myself, they would knock off about 15% right off the top of the bill for me.

I think we should go back to the days before the bean counter middlemen drove up the cost of medicine. Insurance was called Major Medical...and only used for emergency needs. Routine care, you paid for (and nice if you can save for it pre-tax)...and since you were paying for it, you would shop around for your Dr......and prices were lower.

Once the HMO's stepped in and then more govt influence....that's when medical prices skyrocketed.

But yes...I'd rather have emergency coverage for, ahem...emergencies, and I can save and pay for routine annual meds and visits and such as needed. Decisions about my care should be made by me....and why shouldn't everyone put aside some money for their annual medical care, just like they save for gas, food, shelter...etc.?
