"Gentoo: because watching stuff scroll by on the screen really fast makes me a Linux expert practically overnight -- which is how long it takes to install^W compile. Who needs to use their computer for computing when you could be using it to compile that entire world meta port for that single package upgrade?"
Wow...if you take all weekend to compile a single package AND can't seem to use your computer while it is compiling...I think you have more problems to worry about than what distro you're using.
However, that being said...if you DO have really old hardware which would take some compiling time (but you can still use the thing while it is compiling)...those older machines do benefit the most from having things custom compiled for them.
I could kind of get behind them when trying to protect living things like whales from overkilling...etc.
But geez..sounds like they're a bit like MADD...and going WAY beyond what they were originally set up for....
MADD now pretty much seems to want total prohibition...and Greenpeace is leaning towards the eco-paranoid where things won't be 'right' until we go back to a primitive caveman society...
I've been browsing over some fo the Soundexchange's FAQ...wow, it sounds like they're wanting you to pay them if you have any sort of webcast. Maybe it is the wording....but almost sounds like if stream anything...even recordings YOU make yourself (musical or otherwise) they are wanting you to pay them a license???
Can someone tell me if I'm reading that correctly or not?
Hmm...wish there was an analogous way to run a pirate radio station on the internet like you can on the airwaves....something that isn't quite as easy to track...etc.
Yes, I know the FCC will come looking for you...but they have to at least put some effort into finding you, and I'm guessing unless you are really high power and stepping over other people, messing with tvs, etc....they're not that well funded or interested in enough to chase everyone down.
I guess that's what gets me the most. I really don't like to compromise when it comes to my audio and video. I have always (ever since being a kid/teen) enjoyed good audio and these days good video.
I figure why not get the best I can commercially? Why settle for something just 'decent' ?
There's a reason I don't often go to a movie theater...I can have the same quality experience at home, with an open bar, kitchen...and no screaming kids that people won't keep quiet.
Well, most any good sized living room HD tv is gonna run you in the ballpark of $2K or a bit more.
I'm currently looking at what looks to be a good deal...samsung 59" plasma...with 3D starter kit for about $1900.
I'm definitely not gonna make hulu or youtube my main viewing source...I want something that makes my investment look good.
Not everyone can only afford a computer to watch tv from you know...some of us like to have something in a room that friends can come over to and enjoy as a social event. Can't do that on a 19" screen.
but I know Cox will NOT sell you net without at LEAST basic included.
Not true.
I get a business Cox internet connection to my house...only $70/mo...no caps, I can run servers, static IP and fantastic service on the few times I've had problems or outttages.
I get anywhere from 12-15 down and from 5-9 up speedwise.
And...so I hear...hehehe...you can split off that cable and get full analog channels on tv plus all the HD ones hat aren't encrypted for not 1 cent extra.
Of course...I just hear you can do that.
You don't have to show them a license or anything...just order it and they'll put it in your home and it works great.
My problem is....and I do like some netflix streaming...but why do I pay thousands of dollars for LED LCD or plasma large screen tv's (55" and up)...and then watch content on it that is nowhere NEAR HDTV quality?
Nothing that is streaming comes close to the audio or visual fidelity to run on the $$$ equipment I buy.
I can download stuff off USENET that is pretty high quality...but then again...not immediate and I do enjoy watching live TV networks, some sporting events...etc.
I guess the hulu and streaming only crowd will be ok if they don't have nice equipment, or not that much of a tv hound....
The ones in New Orleans do not use radar...photo only....if they'd been using radar, I'd not have gotten a ticket, my valentine one radar detector would have let me know it was there at least a mile away....
The ones in New Orleans are ONLY photo...no radar.
If they'd had radar, I'd have known they were speed cameras and not just stop light cameras.....my valentine one radar detector would have done off like crazy....and I'd not have gotten all those tickets.
The main thing is, I"ve grown up with it and really don't want to have to spend the rest of my life doing a mental calculation to figure out temps....I'm just fine leaving it the way it is here....I see no benefit to my daily life in converting other than being a pain in the ass to have to relearn what I can do without even thinking.
And for cooking?
Sauteeing or grilling...no I don't look at temp...but long term smoking of large cuts of meat on my smoker or baking or roasting in the oven....yes I do know what the temps are and watch them carefully.
If this is the case, it sounds like this company has not taken due diligence to invest and set up proper equipment suited to generate photographic evidence of speeding and therefore have all evidence against drivers thrown out until they can remedy this situation.
Otherwise, they're basically submitting pictures of cars and spreadsheets of times, dates and speeds with no way to explicitly link the two....and no human there to corroborate the connection.
Heck, if that's all you need for evidence, I could set up a camera to take pictures and a random number generator to come up with times, dates and speeds, and be just as accurate as this system proposes to be.
The implication of the 2x photos is obvious...to imply that that photo 1 was a x time, and photo 2 was at y time.
These two photos are snapped to imply this and be used as evidence against them. Otherwise...they should be thrown out as evidence, or at least have the time stamps removed from them, in which case the photo company better have some type of evidence better than a text print out of times and speeds to prove anything, otherwise how are they to prove they were clocking your car and not the one beside you through the intersection?
Hey, if they just remove the points I might have a bit less of an issue with it. I mean if you can just drive however you want as long as you have the money for the tickets.....
In New Orleans, they did JUST THAT!!
They put up what I thought were stoplight cameras...no problem I stop.
I didn't know they were also speed cameras....and there is a lag time between getting popped, and you receiving your ticket in the mail...a fucking MONTH!!
This was on my route to work..I got 7 of them...lucky it was ONLY 7.
But on the back of each ticket...it says clearly that "this is not a moving violation and will not go on your record".
This is NOTHING but revenue generation.
The nice folks in Jefferson Parish, next to us..voted these damned things out...with they people in Orleans Parish would do the same.
You don't but it might not be that easy. Firefox 4 probably won't be backported to many old versions of Linux distros so you might not be able to get it from your package manager.
That is true, however there is nothing stopping you from compiling it yourself for your particular distro or hardware set.
You can do it more most any distro, or use a distro that compiles EVERYTHING like Gentoo.
Not everyone has to retool and buy new stuff;D only the american, lololol.
And there you have it.
Only the Americans would need to spend a lot of money (and we're short of that as it is right now), and turn our lives upside down for decades to come.....why would we want to do that?
For the average US citizen, there is no real compelling reason for them to do so. There is no real way it would impact their lives in any positive manner whatsoever. Frankly, I'd have a hell of a time with real life things. It would take me forever to figure out what to wear outside while watching the weather report on tv in the mornings. I know how to dress for a forecast of 89F and high humidity. I have NO idea what that would be in C (too lazy to find an internet calculator). I know intuitively how to cook a piece of meat on my smoker at 220F or in the oven at 400F.
I am old enough where I'd likely never be able to just know in my head how to do these things naturally without getting out a conversion chart/program and that would be a pita.
No one in the US would be comfortable with it in every day life for at least a couple of generations.
It isn't like most Americans ever travel outside of the US, so what compelling reason could be given to the avg US citizen to change other that "Well, everyone else is doing it"?
Spotify allows you to pick a song and play it -- something which Pandora (last time I tried it) does not. Indeed, I think Pandora's weighted-random personal radio station is a legal hack, so that they're classed as a radio station rather than something else.
Spotify really is like having an iTunes with a vast library.
Ok..I guess I don't get this set up then. I like to use Pandora, much like a radio...gives me a nice random play, within a genre....I've been discovering new artists this way, much like with radio when I was a kid.
If I want to pick and choose my songs from a LARGE music collection that I know I like...I can just use my iPod/iTunes for that.
I can't see paying money for this..I own a large library if I want to choose, but I prefer a free radio for just different random listening and for discovering new stuff....I don't mind an ad or two for radio, that's what I've grown up with.
I like pandora and the like...because it is more like the radio when I grew up. Album rock FM back in the day was how I found new and great music whlle driving around town, etc. And back then, well, rock music wasn't as splintered as much as it is now...on the same station back then you could hear Floyd, Jackson Browne, Zeppelin, the Stones and for fun (a bit earlier times) you might get a John Denver song thrown in the mix.
I miss that and since I work and streaming is blocked most anywhere I've ever worked, I don't have time to go out and hunt through the tons of stuff out there to find a few gems. I like to be able to stream through my iPhone on pandora like the radio of old....
Since moving into my new home, I've noticed a significant reduction in secret CIA messages being injected into my brainwaves. Goodbye ugly tinfoil hat!
I wouldn't get too cocky about this...nor would I throw away a perfectly good tin foil hat either.
You just have to wait for them to process the "Change of Address" forms before they can know where to start re-transmission of the CIA brainwave secret messages.
Not to make you paranoid or anything, but you might wanna give it a couple weeks more before breathing a sigh of relief.
Now though... getting there several hours early cause you never know how long security is going to take...
wondering what new hoop I have to jump through. What's that? empty my pockets? ok sure I guess. Huh? take off my belt? what really? ok, let me hold my pants up... take off my shoes? are you kidding? really? well crap, I didn't bring my shoehorn with me it's going to take me awhile to get them back on, no wonder this damn line is moving so fuckin slow. Take my computer out of the computer bag?! are you serious? isn't that what the damn x-ray machine is for? put my deoderant, suntan lotion, and mouthwash in individual plastic baggies? ok fuck it i'm going home this is rediculous... oh what's that? I'm under arrest? well fuck.
and that's even before the groping.
Just curious..what airports do you go to where they do all of this?
I usually get to the airport 1 to 1.5 hours before flight time max...I check most of my stuff, but my packpack and computer case go with me. Before I get to the TSA place I put my 'beepables' like jewelry, watch, phone...wallet..etc, into my back pack..so, I usually take off my shoes, put the stuff through xray and walk to the other side put shoes on and grab bags and I'm on my way to my plane.
I've yet to see all the groping, and long waits and all yet at any airport I go to.
I travel mostly in the southeast, but even when I went out as far as CO recently...no big deal really to get through security.
I just make sure and never look at the speedometer, until the radar detector comes on.....or if I'm on a street where they've put in the new revenue generators...err...speed/stop cameras.
I'm glad to see the voters voted them out of Jefferson Parish...but shit...I don't think they'll ever get them out of New Orleans.
Oh well, at least I know where they all are...so other than those areas, my avg speed everywhere not on a hwy is about 60mph....
What if my family is discussing my alcoholic father, my pregnant niece, my HIV+ friend, and my habit of killing interviewers and burying them in my backyard?
I'd hope to God that you all weren't discussing such things on a public forum like Face book?!?!?!?
Geez, use the phone, or meet in person...I'd never put any discussions like that on an internet forum. Bad for you and your father if they searched for info on him for a job....
Wow, I've never even heard of such an occurance before...
Where the fsck do you live man???
Wow...if you take all weekend to compile a single package AND can't seem to use your computer while it is compiling...I think you have more problems to worry about than what distro you're using.

Ok, AGW is a new TLA to me...what does AGW stand for?
I could kind of get behind them when trying to protect living things like whales from overkilling...etc.

Actually....most common peoples to be lacking digits...shop teachers.
Doesn't matter what part of the world you're in....
