You seem to think you're entitled to sex for helping someone with computer issues, or that a "thank you" is insufficient payment for a favor: I'm guessing you don't get told you're a nice guy very often.
"That just like living and owning a small business in Philly, it's cheaper in the long run to pay the protection money versus the risk of going to the hospital with broken bones."
Wow..do they really still do that kind of thing up there? Is this still done in many other cities around the US?
"I'm willing to bet most geeks haven't set up their computers for remote ssh access. Yeah, I could do it, no, it isn't worth the hassle."
What hassle??
My computers pretty much all come with sshd (linux boxes). All you really have to do is turn it on...and then go into the router and port forward to that box..and voila you are set up.
2-3 simple steps are too much of a hassle to most geeks??
"Would you really prefer power be transferred back to 50 different state legislatures that make up the United States? "
Actually...YES
The state and local govt are more responsive to the needs of the local people. Different states have greatly different needs...CA is quite different than Iowa.
Not to mention...if you don't like the laws and taxes in one state...then you are free to move to a state more to your liking and lifestyle.
A by product of one of the federal govt's enumerated duties...defense. The internet was a nice by product of the dept of defense....so, I think most of us can agree with that one.
...I do most certainly agree that the Federal Govt. should not be the ones dictating which type bulb I fucking purchase!! I'm thinking that is a huge stretch even with the bastardization of the Interstate Commerce clause...geez, they need to fix that shit.
"Unless you're being paid under the table, you think that not signing up for social security means you don't have to pay the normally 6% tax (4% this year)?"
I swear I can remember a face and details about a person for years....but I often forget someone's name as short as a minute after they tell me.
Hell, most of the time when I'm trying to pick up on chicks...I just give them a nickname like "Muffin" or something kinda silly. They think its kind of cute, and I get time to figure what the fsck their real name is....
While I agree we should reform our immigration procedures and streamline it for potential new US citizens...I think we need to get rid of the "if you cross the border and drop a kid out, the kid is automatically a US citizen" bastardization of the (14th?) amendment. That wasn't the intention.
You should have to have at least one parent that is an official US citizen.
"That may be true for the cable company, but both the insurance (talking home/auto here, not medical) and cell phone carriers do indeed use it to perform credit checks."
Actually, for things like cell phones, you don't have to give SSN.
Some will either take a copy of your last phone bills or history of such as good, or like last tiem I did it...I just said I didnt' want to give SSN and wrote them a check for a deposit...which I got returned a few months later.
"Significantly, the exam board have to assign their own number, because British children probably don't have an identifying number when they're entered for the exam."
I was wondering the same for US kids.
I mean, I didn't apply for and get a SSN till I was in like 9th grade, we all did it during our typing class as an in class assignment.
Frankly, if I ever have a kid...I'd NOT ever sign him up for a SSN, and give him a choice on whether he wanted to get into the program.
I believe you can still claim religions exemption...but from old research, I think you can still stay out of the system if you never sign up, but once you DO sign up for SS, you can't get out of it.
Sure, you might get some strange looks and have some tax form problems with employment (since everyone assumes you are in SS)...but I'd think that would be a small price to pay to never have to pay into the fscking system, etc....hell, its going bankrupt soon anyway, total waste of your money.
"The insurance company, cable company and phone company all use it as a unique identifier, not to run credit checks. Likewise the doctor needs it to give to the insurance company as a unique identifier."
Not necessarily.
I've been quite adamant about my insurance not needing or using my SSN. I've had to really bitch with my W2 employers who often automatically freely give out the SSN to insurance, but I've had employers and insurance not to use SSN, and issue me an ID number.
I've only had ONE utility I've given SSN to, and I did see that their system was so old and archaic, that it required it, but cable, phone...nope, they don't have my SSN.
I don't have a land line anymore...but when I got my iPhone from ATT, I gave them a $200 or so deposit and no SSN. I got the deposit back about 8 mos later if I recall.
I don't give SSN to electrictiy..etc.
In short...I don't give out my SSN to anything not related to social security taxation. I do make the odd exception for someone needing a legitimate credit check (car or home loan).
It used to be MUCH harder to not give a SSN, but today, you might have to at most talk to a 2nd layer of management, but you do not have to give your SSN.
Man, I've not given one at a Dr.s office in years.
I've been running gentoo on all my home boxes for years.
Really..with a modern computer, compiling really takes very little time, and it isn't like the box locks up while compiling.
Where you DO get the biggest bang for the buck with Gentoo, is on older hardware. Custom compiling flags and all do help for giving new life to old hardware.
On these..sure it take forever to compile some things...but it will get a benefit from this, and it isn't like the old stuff *IS* my primary computer(s) in the house..so, I'm not missing out on anything letting it chug along.
Right now..I'm putting gentoo on an old iBook G3. I can't get any new versions of OSX for it, newer apps like firefox's latest versions won't run on older OSX, so, with linux on it...it will be responsive and useful again, maybe as my kitchen computer.
Sure, it took 4x days for KDE to download and compile on it, but who cares? I just have it in the corner, fired off the job, and let it roll. I'll finish setting it up at my leisure. But when done, it will be useful again.
Also, I don't think a lot of current linux distros out there are supported older PPC architecture...gentoo is still a good one for that.
Well, it *is* very difficult to get windows apps to run on linux.
If you're doing for a DAW type thing on linux, you really should go for an all linux approach. Use tools that are there..Jack, Audacity, Rosegarden, Ardour...
I've even read about distros out there are are almost turnkey for you, tuned for very low latency. If you want to go the linux route, you should try to use more native linux tools.
You have your windows box and it works for you. I'd say just set up another separate linux box for DAW..and start to slowly try to work with it...see its strengths, etc....you can actually have the best of both worlds that way?
"I personally just don't get how people who live in disaster prone areas don't stock up on at least the basic stuff needed to survive for a while without outside contact. "
I can answer that one pretty easily for myself, living in New Orleans.
When a storm is on the way, I just get the fuck out of town!!
I have never understood why some people want to stay and ride out the storm? I figure (unless it is a Katrina type disaster) it is basically gonna be about a 4x day or so vacation out visiting friends and relatives...and I'll head back when things are all clear.
I did stay once through a tropical storm..and power was out for me a couple days. I thought, why do this and be miserable again. I certainly don't like to be in NOLA in the middle of summer with no AC...why even stay to do that?
I've actually had to try to survive a couple of nights in New Orleans in dead of summer with NO air conditioning, man, that was brutal. I don't know how people lived and worked down here prior to the invention of AC, especially with all the damned clothes they work back then...whew.
I was shocked when I visited a friend from the NE area and found that MANY people don't even have AC in their houses?!?! I'd never seen that before really, growing up in the south.
I guess the cold up there in analogous to our heat in the summer down here.
I''m usually not in a huge hurry for winter to be over...but with this weeks temps staying in the mid 70's, I have to guess the cold stuff is just about over for us down here.
Nice guys don't get laid as much either....
Because acting that way seems to vastly improve your chances of getting laid?
Wow..do they really still do that kind of thing up there? Is this still done in many other cities around the US?
What hassle??
My computers pretty much all come with sshd (linux boxes). All you really have to do is turn it on...and then go into the router and port forward to that box..and voila you are set up.

This is the way it was intended...
Err....I've yet to see a single CFL or LED light that costs less than a regular light bulb.....usually they are MANY times more expensive.
A by product of one of the federal govt's enumerated duties...defense. The internet was a nice by product of the dept of defense....so, I think most of us can agree with that one.
That's their angle!!!
No more lightbulbs going on over your head when you get an idea!!!
I'd have to guess that listening to gay rap is pretty much a niche activity.
Back to the barter system anyone??
Actually...yes,. that is exactly what I believe.
Thank you!!
You have just given me the reason I need to start improving my memory skills....making more money!!!
Really?
Ok, I will never understand why some men let them get by with this?!?!
The way I figure it, the bitch is lucky that I LIFT the damned lid when taking a leak.
So, with equality all around, the only way I'll bother putting the seat down when finished...is if SHE lifts the damned thing when she is done.
Fair is far..otherwise...c'mon it isn't rocket science, you see it down/up...put it up/down.

Well, depends on how shallow your water table is.
We can't even bury our dead below ground here in New Orleans.
I can answer that one pretty easily for myself, living in New Orleans.
