"Let's also not forget that ALL version of Windows, from NT on up, have been written to comply with C2 security standards:"
I think way back when it was NT....yeah, it qualified for like 2 parts of the C2 regiment, but, basically for it to be compliant, you could not have it connected to any networks.
Basically windows IS secure...if it is on a box that is disconnected, unplugged and buried in concrete about 6 ft deep.
I don't need to exactly know 'what' my money was spent on....just how much is going out.
Lately I generally take out about $300 a week...I buy groceries with that (I cook for the whole week usually on Sundays, take lunch, leftovers for dinners so I can hit the gym...etc).
I take what is left....and that is my spending money that week in general.
I pay for gas with a CC, but, that's about it. I can see daily how much I have left and keeps me honest about what I spend. If I'm paying all in cash it means more to me...I actually think twice about spending 'real' money...much more so, than if I just swipe a card. Swiping a card doesn't translate into spending real hard money...till EOM.
"The ability to touch-text is common here in the UK and I'd expect even more-so in Japan. I'd never buy a phone without a proper input pad for that very reason - touch-texting whilst pissed in a club and having a conversation is essential!"
I think it also may have something to do with txt messaging starting out earlier and still probably more popular in Europe and other far away lands than in the US.
I think early on, it had to do with how ya'll are billed for voice and txt...it was cheaper over there to txt than to voice. Over here...pretty much the opposite. Heck...still is really...you have to pay extra to txt or get a txt plan for your phone.
I actually never tried it till just after Katrina, when we found it was about the only way to contact anyone with a 504 area code on their phone. You simply could not call anyone for almost a month or more, but you could txt them.
"I reckon that the iPhone is actually a good phone (if you disregard how expensive it is when considering the contract fees), but IMHO, it is indeed, first and foremost a triumph of marketing over all else."
Considering that 'contract fees' and the prices of data plans are all about the same in the US...that they are a 'given'.
You can easily disregard them in consideration of the price of the iPhone to any other smart phone in the US. In that light...they're pretty much ALL the same price here.
"You can pay vending machines with your cell phone. "
I for one, am NOT anxious to have a cell phone that spends my money on vending or anything else.
I prefer most of my purchases to be with good, old fashioned cash. I can keep up with my spending better that way...it isn't abstracting money from value, say like how casino chips make you forget you're really playing for real money.
I like to keep any credit as low as possible....once out of CC debt hell, I intend to say out of CC debt hell. I wouldn't want to pay by cell phone, just another possible way to ruin yourself by spending without thinking.
"Why is it that with China the first reflex is always "us vs them" like the parent post?
The Chinese will innovate with the resources that the Chinese have while the US will innovate with the resources that the Americans have (note no us and they).
I don't understand why people feel that it would be better if the Chinese were deprived of this opportunity. I would be more inclined to say "join the party", the "more the merrier" in the engineer's club."
Because...live IS a constant contest to try to come out on top.
The earth has limited resources, and there is only so much money/wealth to be had. The winners....live the best quality of lives. The US has had the kings share for a long time, and no one ever wants to give up 'the good life' if they don't have to.
Each country has a govt. that is supposed to look out for the best interest of its citizens and their way of life. That is one of the main functions of them.
No...it isn't one big happy world, where everyone lives as equals, holds hands and sings Kumbahya (or however you spell it).
It is a contest with losers and winners. Nothing new here...this is an integral part of human existance since the beginning of time.
"If you don't cooperate at least a little, you're not getting across, which presents some problems for those of us who want to, you know, ever leave the US and be able to come back, which if you listen to people on this site we "ignorant Americans" don't do nearly enough."
Not traveling outside the US borders does not make one and "ignorant American". There are plenty of reasons one may not wish to travel to other countries.
I've traveled about outside a bit, earlier in my life, but, as of now, I really have no inclination to travel outside the US. Economics plays a small part right now, as does violence (in MX murder and kidnapping is on the rise)....but, mostly, right now, with the US being as large and diverse as it is, there are so many places I want to go visit. We have cities and places that will give all sorts of experiences. We have mountains to climb or ski on. If you like a tropical climate, hit the FL coast, hit the keys. You like something with some European style architecture? Come party in New Orleans. We have the Grand Canyon...Mount Rushmore....all kinds of monuments. And food? Heck....you can take some interesting culinary travels within the US.
So, for right now...I have no real compelling reason to travel outside the US borders.
I have no plans in the future at all, at this point, to apply for a passport, I don't need one.
"I think they are required to read him his rights. The catch was he wasn't arrested initially so he wouldn't had known if he cooperated in any way he lose his 5th Amendment rights.
It's a catch-22 in his situation. If he refused to answer the boarder patrol's questions when they suspected he was carrying encrypted porn they would have put him in a holding cell for awhile. I think they can't hold him for more than 48hrs without filing charges against him."
IANAL...but from my understanding...at a border crossing, when entering the US, you have an exception to the consent to search rule, crossing the border is automatic consent to search. However, it sounds like if they search and find encrypted content, you can likely refuse under 5th amendment to give the key/password. What seems to have happened here...is they found encrypted content...and he did something more than clam up...not sure what yet was 'cooperative', but, apparently if he'd not done anything, he'd be covered under the 5th.
NEVER cooperate with the cops. If you are about to get in trouble, clam up...get lawyered up.
Once you start to cooperate a little, it appears....you can start to give up rights you have.
Some good info is here. Also, look up a film they did, it is available for free called Busted.

I've heard more than one guys experience with this...hell one night a Dr. friend of mine and I were having a few beers, and laughing almost put together a plan to apply for a study grant for just this ankle thing from one of the government science/health agencies.
I'll bet you 10 to nothing, if we'd actually submitted the paperwork, we'd have gotten the grant money.
"I know. Us horrible people, suffering the burden of this. You'd almost think that if it wasn't for things like people buying multiple investment properties, trying to 'flip' properties after 12 months, putting $100k in, and expecting a $400k profit, and pushing the prices of housing sky high, and so forth, we'd not be in a financial crisis..."
And don't forget Greenspan leaving interest rates so low for so long, contributing to the high housing rates, and not to mention things like the CRA, and activist groups pretty much bullying banks to give loans to poor credit risk people (either that or be branded a racist bank if you didn't give to poor neighborhoods), nor forget the idiots out there selling liars loans to people just to make a quick $$ and sell off the debt to be packaged for investors. And don't forget old Barney Franks and the Freddie/Fannie fiasco....all of that "everyone should own a house" nonsense helped a lot to get us in this crisis.
And now?
They want to bail those fuckers out that bought too much house at with ARMs...either to flip or own...either they took a risk or they were stupid and didn't read the contracts. Either way...we should let them fail, and let things reset.
"...but for people surviving and raising families on $1500 a month..."
$1500/month....a FAMILY? Who the hell can raise a family on that? I mean, hell...where do you find rent that is much below $800/mo at the cheapest (for one bedroom place)?
I would put forth, that putting "faith" in any company, is faith misplaced.
A company isn't a benevolent entity that cares about people and the general 'good'....not if they are for profit.
A company's ONLY allegiance is to the stockholders and the almighty dollar (substitute your country's currency here). Does it have to act in a negative way? No. But, having and losing faith in a faceless, non-human entity is just not something to do. I'd say that you should, in general not put faith into anyone or anything that is beholden to someone else for their current position....politicians included. They are out to get re-elected and unless you really matter in that equation...well, I think you see where I'm going.
Unless someone is in a somehow powerful position, but, altruistic and not for profit, and independent...I'd not be putting my faith in anyone.
The only person looking out for YOUR best interests....is YOU.
"Wrong. Calling homosexuality a 'deviation' is deviant, harmful to self and others, odd, offensive, and just plain wrong. You are in the minority in your opinion. Homosexuality is not in the DSM. It is not an illness. Homophobia is religious fundamentalism and religious intolerance one would expect to see coming from the Taliban, not a free country. You can have your opinion, but my opinion is your opinion is offensive, and I get to express that, too. You don't get to be a bigot and just assume everyone else agrees with you anymore, sorry, we're here to point out in no uncertain terms that your beliefs put you in a widely reviled minority."
Hey, I welcome your opinion, but, (and this is purely anecdotal) my stated opinions of homosexuality, and its acceptance, are definitely NOT in the minority. I don't mean that most people out there care what 2 adults do behind closed doors, but, the majority do think it is wrong to some extent, and yes...deviant.
If it weren't the case, I think you'd see gay marriage passed nation wide, but, that just isn't the case now is it?
I dare say your opinions are the minority in the US...it is still a largely socially conservative nation, and homosexuality is not considered part of the norm by a long shot.
And no one mentioned homophobia...I'm certainly not "scared" of homosexuals. Puzzled? Yes. But definitely not scared, I frankly don't know many people that are scared of homos, but, they definitely don't think it is normal behavior.
But hey...eveyone is welcome to their opinion. It is a free country.
(And hey, try not to be so thin skinned....just because someone doesn't agree with you or a lifestyle...no need to get all bent outta shape.)
"And so, equally, shouldn't be disclosed to a foreign corporation, which is what happens if you are storing them on a Microsoft-owned and controlled mail server. If I found out that my doctor or lawyer was storing my case details in Google Docs I would be equally appalled."
You know...there's really no way to know (unless you start looking over all the header info on your emails) if anyone IS using google servers for email. It is easy to set them up to use your domain with gmail. I recently set it up for a friend and unless you look at headers...it appears to all come and go from xyz.com.
I've even heard many people are running their email through gmail even if they have email servers...just to used Google's spam filters before sending it locally through their own systems.
So...I'd venture to guess many small offices may be using (and storing your info) on 'foreign' servers, and the populace at large has no clue.
