Not necessarily....black people DO commit a large proportion of violent crimes than other races in the US, per capita.

They are only about 13-15% of the population, but commit vastly more violent crimes in the US.

The problem is not that the data set reflects the reality. The problem is not that the AI makes mistakes, but that the particular mistakes the AI makes reflect the bias of the society that programmed it.

I believe that the newer ways of "Deep Learning" methods of teaching AI will address these concerns

Sounds like just faulty programming on that article you referred to...it said this for the training of their AI:

"orthpointeâ(TM)s core product is a set of scores derived from 137 questions that are either answered by defendants or pulled from criminal records. Race is not one of the questions. "

So, it seems...that while the AI got it wrong on race, HOWEVER the AI algorithm wasn't even USING race as a factor....

    And Eric Holder?

I hardly hold him in esteem as a neutral observer/actor in any situation involving race.

If they stopped a bunch of blacks and none of them had contraband and weren't re-offending, they were let go, or are you saying the majority of them were being frisked and framed with cops planting contraband on them?

  4. You have at least one or you'd be posting AC.

I don't really count /. as a social media forum.

Its just a bulletin board you can spout off on....not a place you make connections.

  5. Social media is all about making connections. Maybe you want to find people who think alike, and you want them to find you too.

I hear this all the time...and frankly I"m stumped.

Like I mentioned, I don't do social media, yet I have NO shortage of friends or ability to find people interested in things I like.

I just go out and MEET them. I like some metal too, I go to shows and meet people when I'm there. I like photography, I found a photography group in town....etc.

I find that friends I meet by doing this tend to be real and stick around, longer than friends I hear people often complaining about that they know on social media...and usually never actually meet and hang with in person.

I've honestly never found not being on FB or other social media to be a social detriment.

Pretty much all intelligent life on this planet has preference and bias that seems to stem from a very base level... Why would AI be any different?

Who wants to explain it to him?

    Not a problem.

    OP: You are 100% correct.

People look for patterns in everything, including individual and tribal behaviors and trends.

I can't really think of a stereotype that hasn't been or still is based largely on observable facts.

It makes sense that AI that uses deep learning and other methods will likely see trends too.

I mean, it should be simple for it to notice there aren't a lot of white guys on the floor with NBA teams.

I doubt anyone human would refute that.

So, why would it not be natural to observe the types and percentages of violent crimes committed by "X" race/gender categories?

    Bias...sure, but based on facts.

So, yes...if intelligence is present (natural or artificial) , it will observe these trends, and base future trends and behavior upon these observational biases.

If you have no biases, you could not operate in this world very well, as that you would wake up to a brand new world every day.

The key is to keep the biases always in a state of adjustment based on changing trends.

  7. If I am an HR department and fund that you don't have a social media account I may actually find it highly suspicious.

    Really?

    Why?

Do people not know some people value privacy still these days?

I know it isn't a problem when applying for jobs that require a clearance......it is actually a big PLUS.

  8. They're not allowed to ask if you're married for example, or how old you are

    Really?

I seem to recall on job applications there being a place to fill in your marital status, and your DOB....?

It's been awhile since I last filled one out (I'm self employed 1099 contractor now)....but I know I've seen this on applications in the past...?

    The DOB for sure.

  9. I"m really torn on this...

I mean, I do believe, that pretty much anything you do outside of work that doesn't directly affect the business...should be off limits.

I also believe that companies should be banned from asking for credentials to log into social media, etc accounts.

However, I'm not sure I have a problem with the business' HR searching through publicly available data a person self publishes for the world.

I mean, if someone is stupid enough to post a bunch of party pictures with him sucking a skull bong in areas where this behavior is still illegal....well, that says more than a persons habit, that they are not smart enough that they should know this should be kept private, a lack of common sense you might say.

I think weed should be legalized in all the US...I don't believe in drug tests....but if you're job depends on not doing that activity, and you self "incriminate" online...well, that says you're kinda stupid and maybe not the type of employee someone would want.

As I've mentioned before, I personally take it even further, in that I have no social media accounts, and have never signed up for any to date.

I've always been concerned about this from decades back that it could impact my bottom line $$...and my livelyhood vs someones cat pics, just isn't worth it to me.

Besides, all the people that I want to converse with, know how to reach me...and we try as often as possible to get together in meatspace. We only use texting/email...and yes, even voice calls to arrange the more important face to face times.

  13. When a person earns money in country X, but has vested interested in country X and Y, there a tax liability decision is made. Normally, a person gets a reprieve for the smaller of the two amounts assessed, IF the larger of the two amounts is paid. The difference between Google (and other large enterprises) and the rest of the plebs, seems to be that Google, et al, can say "not paying in X or Y". If /you/ did that, you'd be in prison for tax evasion -- and rightly so. Google should have to prove it paid tax in Ireland, and if it's less than what it paid in France, it should have to pay France the difference between the two.

Actually it is simpler than that....

A company exists to make money, period.

They want to maximize their profits, so, they work (and hire lawyers to guide them) to pay the absolute least amount of tax they have to within each country they do business in, within the confines of the laws of those nations.

It may be a fine line, but as long as it is within that line of lawful, then there is no problem.

If you dislike the amount of tax a company/person has to pay in a country, you change the laws....simple really.

Or...do you as an individual not take EVERY tax deduction and savings you legally can?
