Gnome's vfs lets you open local and remote filesystems identically, and copy between them. In Computer you can set up permanent connections for speed too.
KDE. hows that for choice? Or right clicking and going to browse? Or selecting browse from the Gnome menu. Or adding a launcher icon to the menu bar. Or changing a preference.
Oh yeah, you want the UI people to change for you.
Isn't the standard practice for wireless power transfer to use a horde of small, highly skilled mice working smoothly together, each transporting a few columbs of electrons?
What the hell are you people learning in schools these days? Are your teachers clowns?
The core system gets a lot of Usability testing - although the UI leader (Seth) has written that UI testing is not a be-all-and-end-all, there is an art to it too.
The GPL doesn't need tested, it's simple just copyright law -> author chooses what rights we have with their work. And Copyright law doesn't need tested.
1. Find its fonts without having to edit the XF86Config file 189 times and install some half-working font server for the other three fonts. Funny, I just dropped some.ttf's into ~/fonts/ and they were there.
2. Upgrade Gnome and KDE applications without having to install yet ANOTHER version of glibc. That or statically link everything and quit pursuing dynamically-linked utopia. I think there's enough disk space now. Windows dynamically links, and includes the dependancies in the download package. Systems like apt-get will get the deps, or if you get the packages from a physical media (I usually get stuff of a mags dvd), then the deps are usually there too.
3. Have a file manager that isn't linked to every single library on the system, so that if one library is upgraded/replaced, it doesn't make the file manager useless. Opps, KDE and Gnome have very good file-managers with extra plugins for file previews. No problems there either
4. Make it so these problems can be fixed without changing distributions.
Done:)
That's not a dream. Showing the Open Source Desktop as a 'deep discount' alternative is de-grading to the community, as if we are a lower-quality brand. Gnome and KDE both strive to be the best, and should be marketted in this light too. I don't mean expensive, just quality (like Tescos has managed)

Microsofts next launch is absolutely focused on "search". The entire filesystem metaphor in Longhorn revolves around data and association. The 'Stuff like this' (?) demo is a bit like Dashboard, it brings up relevant info from all your personal data, and the internet.
When users are trying to find something like 'funny billy goatse photo' their hard drive and Microsoft's search engine will be used together. Unknowingly, MSN search will be a part of everyday life.
Microsofts next monopoly abuse is pretty clear already, their technology demos show it too. They will integrate and before you can say 'Anti-trust investigation' the world at large will be using MSN search for _everything_ - information is power too.
Keep close tabs on Microsoft's actions, unfortunately when they are punished by EU/USA its too late.
Do you mean not comprehensive as in having more entries than Britannia?
br/>Thinking before typing usually works.
The OpenGL bit is an X thing, but that'll be here in not too long. Cairo usage throughtout the stack will be interesting.
cdrdao is a nice one, here's my wee script for copying from drive to drive on the fly:
/dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom1
cdrdao copy --source-device ATAPI:0,0,0 --source-driver generic-mmc --device ATAPI:0,1,0 --driver generic-mmc --on-the-fly
eject

What, a worm that breaks into your house, removes the hard-drive from your network storage and edits?
Shit, run!
Doesn't that mean that the MSN engine can be google-bombed therefore they include some similar algorithms as google..
This seems to be a copy of google - no paid, stripped down pages, pageRank by links

It's in there, there are three separate ways to browse normally. He misses those however...
What, you mean like the ones here on [post] Saturday night?
Dam, that includes me.
We do know enough. Stay alert on Planet Gnome, read some of his writing and you'll see how tuned in he is.
I prefer sex with clothes off.

Actually it was satire. Not one bit true.

Nope. sounds like crap.
You build on top of a GPL program, then your code must too be GPL, otherwise your liscence to use that GPL code in your program is revoked.
You have to distribute the code, no matter what (distribute means make available here).

See some of RMS's writing for more info.
The last thing on earth MS wants to do is expose its engineers to GPL code. Even the employees have said that.
It's called 'keeping up to date':
.ttf's into ~/fonts/ and they were there.

Lets so if people can:
1. Stop whining and be more helpful.

There's a nice GPL version for us all to enjoy.
In the UK: Canabalism is legal, though muder is of course illegal.
Very informative, but there was an 'extension' to the spec, making xxx@yyy part of it
Sorry, you got my perspective wrong:
Improving windows - great for us
