I need clarification. Are we discussing Open Source Software or Open Source GUIs?
Mac OS X has an open source kernel, a closed source GUI, OSX specific frameworks and some apple specific drivers. I don't see what the problem is. They have to have something extra to entice people to buy their OS. Fortunately, they support open standards and document their APIs very well. I consider "open standards to be far more important that open source software. as the former help to prevent vendor lock in while the latter does not necessarily do that. What good is it to have open source software if it does not support interoperability?
Running Linux or FreeBSD on a mini will gain you nothing for software availability and you will lose WiFi support so I really don't see what is the point to not run OSX.
Excuse me but that is where you are wrong. I'm talking about the DRM'ed WMA files and I'm not just talking about being able to "play" them but also being able to "purchase" them without having to use a windows machine.
As it now stands, WMP 9 for OS X does not support DRM'ed WMA 9 media. Obviously because of this, it does not support the WMA stores.
I'm guessing your troll was directed at the iPod correct? I'm not talking about the iPod but just being able to "play" them on the mac platform.
Given that mac users cannot play either Real or WMA DRM'ed media, having the iPod being able to play DRM'ed WMA or Real would have absolutely zero value for me, as a mac user.
I'm not interested in buying a windows machine for my home again. I switched and I will be damned before I let some assholes in Washington tell me what I can do with my iPod. I'm a Canadian and I did not vote them in. Isn't that a bit like taxation without representation?
How is this flamebait? This is a genuine concern for Mac users. We cannot playback either Real purchased songs or WMA store purchased songs on our macs.
Then why do you support the GNU group? Why support the GPL which takes away freedom from "people"?
If freedom of choice was important to you, why do you spout the slogans and rhetoric of RMS? ie. "proprietary", "locked into" "corporation".
You like linux and that;'s great but don't trying to chain us with your platitudes and rhetoric.
What "concrete" advantages does Ubuntu on a proprietary IBM laptop offer over OS X?
How are you less at the mercy with your current setup? Why didn't you check the plethora of OSS projects on freshmeat and sourceforge? Why didn't you try out the PPC linux distros?
Was it really about the "freedom" or was it so you could used wine or dual boot into windows to play games?

Those lawsuits are being pushed by disgruntled resellers, not consumers. Have those cases been proven?
Does the competition speak honestly about their battery life? No. Companies like Dell and Sony forget to mention that their "numbers" are based on testing using the lowest bandwidth settings with no user interaction.
YMMV but I've experienced battery life on my 2nd generation iPod which exceeds Apples claims for battery life but then again, I don't use the backlight and I'm not deaf. What this means is I usually listen on Shuffle mode and my volume is less than a fifth of full volume.

I'm sorry but that is a troll. What kind of pre-built machine are you seriously going to get for 450 USD? A 15inch LCD? Why would you want to artificially limit your workspace like that? Why not get a decent 19inch CRT like an LG instead?
Does that 450USD system have onboard or dedicated gfx?
Does it use shared ram or dedicated VRam? Does it include any software similar to iLife?
Does it include Windows XP Pro?
Does it include a DVD-Combo drive?
Does it include CD Burning software?
Does it include a USB Keyboard with USB ports?
Does it include Firewire ports?
What is the purpose of software? To help man perform a function. It is not designed to further a political manifesto. It is not art either. Software is a tool. End users don't give a rat's ass about what license software is under as long as it:
-performs the function properly.
-is reasonably priced with some support and free minor updates
or is provided free of charge without limitations of use.
None of what you mention affects/hurts the end user (remember, the purpose of software is to serve a user) except for your threatened consequences.
1a) Fork. - is a childish response in this case and is a detriment to the end user and may result more bugs and limited functionality.
1b) Remove Java cruft, put OOo on a diet program and make it faster. - Again, a childish response for "political" reasons. There is nothing wrong with Java and it does provide excellent cross-platform support.
2) Make a new suite. - Really offers nothing to the end user and only serves to feed developers egos. End users will have more compatibility issues and less features.
3) Help an existing suite. - This is probably the most sensible response. If you disagree with the direction of the project, don't let the door hit your ass. End users can end up with a choice of robust office suites.
Honestly, if the end user is the least of your concerns and "politics" are paramount, perhaps, you should consider another hobby instead of inflicting your "issues" upon the rest of us by splintering a project based on language choice.
Look around, there are many java based OSS projects out there. RMS is "not" Jesus. You do not have to follow his word like gospel. Learn to think for yourself for crying out loud.
It "is" FUD. The Java language specification is "free" and "open". You are free to reimplement it but you are not allowed to call it "Java" as it is a "trademark" of Sun Microsystems.
Please stop doing MSFT's job for them. The OP hit the nail on the head.
I hear OSS advocate on here all gushing over.NET because they think it is more "free" because MS published just the basic C# stuff and the "Basic" CLR information.
It's a trap. Don't fall for it. MSFT will soon sue the mono project over violated patents and DMCA violations concerning reverse engineering and stolen IP.
You not doing the OSS movement any favours by spreading FUD like that.
Enough with the damn politics already. United we stand, divided we fall. You are playing quite nicely into MSFT's hands. Do you work at MSFT by any chance?
The OSS movement did not seem to have any problem using non-free tools and platforms to develop the free tools we now use today did they? Why are you all being so hypocritial about it now?
Yes they could but that would go against their profit motive. Sun makes money off developers by offering testing suites and training. If they did what you suggested, they would be killing Java as a platform.
I like OSS but stop spreading FUD. How many OSS projects relied on proprietary software to get off the ground? Answer: All of them before the platforms and developer tools were available (GCC, Linux,*BSD).
Bloody hypocrites.

Well you live in a crazy world apparently were artists are given money by their labels just for the hell of it. What do you think pays for the fat signing contacts? Expected Record/album sales.
Of course, downloading off Kazza does not directly hurt the artist but when you hurt the labels, they might not sign the artist for another if sales on that artist's albums are down.
How pray tell should they run the business? Do you expect the artists to sit and wait to pay their bills until micro-payments come in? What does being a professional mean to you? They sign a contract and the labels pay them a salary.
1. artificially inflate compressed file and write to cd (lose quality)
How do you lose quality burning to CD? 2. recompress artificially inflated file (lose more quality)
Who is to say that you have to encode in as lossy format?

Why not just give your "woman" what "she" wants. If it works and it is easy to use, what's the problem?
Out of curiosity, what OS and software would you use to replace the easy to use GUI and iLife Apps? Windows XP? Linux is not ready for the desktop and it is sorely lacking in cheap and easy to use media content creation software. Even with windows, you would be hard pressed to replace iLife 04 let alone iLife 05 cheaply.
