Out of curiosity, what OS and software would you use to replace the easy to use GUI and iLife Apps? Windows XP? Linux is not ready for the desktop and it is sorely lacking in cheap and easy to use media content creation software. Even with windows, you would be hard pressed to replace iLife 04 let alone iLife 05 cheaply.

It's cheap, get it for your "woman" for crying out loud.

In my opinion, both Apple and Microsoft would do well to learn one more lesson: That separating the base operating system from the GUI entirely is the best way to go. With Linux (my preference by a thin margin over OS X) I can have a complex GUI like KDE, a simpler one like Gnome, or a dozen others with their own strengths and weaknesses... or I can run them all at the same time!

That's all great and all for power users but what about the average user who want/needs/expects consistency? De-coupling the GUI like that may give you flexibility but it also means that you have very little base functionality in the apps. With such a de-coupled system, you end up with a bunch of roll your own controls/subsystems in every app which are usually totally inconsistent between apps in both appearance and behaviour. Don't forget that until recently, there was a great deal of difficulty copying and pasting between apps on linux.

If you really want to use KDE, Gnome or fluxbox on OS X in fullscreen mode, you can do that with the X11.app. In fact, you could setup OS X to not boot into Aqua at all and just go directly into fullscreen X11.

Linux lacks killer apps like Photoshop and a consistent and robust UI/UI framework. Sorry but X just does not cut it.

Do you want to know why OS X is still easy to use? They alpha test it with execs like Steve Jobs. Mr. Jobs was one of the main testers for Keynote and look how great it turned out.

Why is it so difficult for my fellow IT geeks to understand that a UI should be easy enough for a CEO to use? You people just don't "get it". There is nothing wrong with offering power features to power users as long as everything remains accessible to the average user and new users through other means.

You really should follow my advice to do some serious website development before tackling desktop UI work. I did website development for a number of years before entering into the windows desktop realm. None of the inhouse windows software I write makes use of any right clicks or cryptic key combinations.

It saddens me that most developers on window are totally clueless when it comes to getting inside the head of users. Well designed software should require minimal documentation for a totally uninitiated user to use it.
