I was SCUDed in Dharan, Riyadh and King Khalid Military City; all in Saudi Arabia.

The most memorable was watching a single SCUD missle flying overhead about 11oclock in Riyadh. Everyone was dumbling with their gas masks and tumbling over each other to get into a large foxhole nearby, but I just stood there, mesmerized at the extreme reality taking place before my eyes. I was separated from my unit and had just got off a C-130 from Dharan and found my bags pilfered upon landing. No gas mask.

A patriot battery was behind me about 50 meters, but boy was those suckers loud. Two patriots were launched; one hit the SCUD motor, the other just barely missed the warhead. The warhead tumbled into a busy part of the city about a click from my position and exploded in a flash of light. I later learned it hit an apartment building and killed a person.

So, Mr. Anonymous Coward Parent, you are very wrong.

The "adventurous" white man traveled from point A to point B on his own dime.

The "enslaved" black man traveled from point A to point B on the white man's dime and ended up living a much better life because of it.

Also, Africans being used as slaves was nothing new to the New World. It was being done for many generations in Europe long before. Somehow, Americans got stuck holding the bag, so to speak and they are now considered the sole guilty party for enslaving the black man.

People also don't realize that the living conditions of an endentured servant or even a slave in the New World were much, much better than back in their African communities. If you went back in time to America and tried to send all the slaves back to Africa, you would probably be killed, not by the white man, but by the black ones.

The main problem is that shared printers randomly appear and disappear from the configuration. CUPS does not allow one to statically configure anything (very bad). One option I've found is to hardwire the config files with the exact parameters that I want, then make the files unwritable.

I'm tired of clients calling me saying their shared printer has "disappeared". My solution? Install LPRng on all these customer configurations. Since installing LPRng, I've never had a single call about printer sharing.

I grabbed all the packages and logged in. Not bad, real pretty. Lots of little eye candy that really shows polish. I went into the configuration editor and for hours played with all the settings. Impressive, lots of things to change here. I launched several applications, setup Kmail, played with Kopete. Mature apps, very nice.

Ok, now here's the bad part: I decided that I do indeed like KDE and would like to continue using it, however it's too damn slow for my system! I even turned off a lot of features that are CPU intensive, but simply dragging a window around the desktop is spotty. My machine isn't too bad; it's 1130MHz and 512MB, Geforece2. Running Gnome on this machine is really snappy.

So, for those of you with top of line machines, KDE looks promising. For those of us with medium to low end machines, I recommend sticking with Gnome for now.

I'm using FC4 on both client and server. I simply grabbed some RPMS (easy to follow instructions) here, loaded them up and I was off and running.

First impressions: wow! holy crap! I can now grab a window and yank it around the desktop with near fluid speed. Everything is highly responsive. I'm a big fan of VNC and have used it for many years now, but I think it's time to switch.
