I don't know about the others, but I've been using Couchsurfing for about a year now.
Couchsurfing has a few different types of checks. A simple one is that 3 other "verified" members must vouch for you and then you can become "verified". Another verification check is done with a credit card.
I've hosted many people and I've surfed many, many places.
Just so you know, there's 2 different types of experiences here:
1. The people hosting you pass you a key, tell you to not stay out late and want to know when you're shipping out so they can get the key back. 2. The people hosting you are excited to hear about your travels, want to get to know you and show you all the cool places in town.
#2 happens more often than not (thank god).
It's obvious that couchsurfing is made attractive because of free room and board, but the best reason is that the people hosting you show you all the cool underground places that tourists never find. They know just where to go to give you the "true" feeling of whatever city you're in.
However, staying in hostels do have one benefit not gained from couchsurfing: you can meet lots of people in hostels that are looking to travel together, so going from hostel to hostel typically isn't a lonely affair. Personally, my best experience was traveling the length of Italy with 7 good looking girls I managed to pick up:)
Ventura, California, Buena High School, 1988 Class President election:
It was the first year of electronic voting, done on a room full of Apple IIe's.
Some kind of voting program was running. I simply made a break in the program, figured it which variables belong to which candidate and bumped the variable count up for my favorite. After that, i simply continued the program and then logged my official vote.
My favorite was Todd Turner. I hear he won by a landslide. No one contested the results. Lucky Todd.
And Todd, if you happen to read this, don't get mad at me, ok? I mean, you probably would have won anyway, right?
Yes, but he'll also have a system that won't crash its X server every hour or so.
I don't think you understand how this exploit works:
This exploit cannot be remotely executed. It requires a user to be logged into their account on the machine they want to infect. In other words, for those of us with linux workstations (only one user account), this exploit doesn't affect us at all.
The only type of machine this exploit targets are machines with multiple untrusted user accounts. I can't imagine why someone would be running this NVIDIA graphics driver on a server type machine anyway...
With all that in mind, it is highly unlikely that anyone would be able to maliciously use this exploit. However, I would like to see NVIDIA fix this problem.
I'm currently using an intel box (2.4ghz) running linux (2.6.17). It has 5 gigabit interfaces with hundreds of vlans spread among them. I'm doing indivudual IP address shaping (thousands of clients), traffic control (what vlan can talk to what vlan/interface), MAC address checking - forwarding - NAT. The load on this machine sits between 0.01 and 0.07.
Everything is home rolled. I learned how to do everything from the LARTC (Linux Advanced Routing and Traffic Control) mailing list archives.
The thing I like about using a linux box as a router is I can do anything, absolutely anything I want. I am not limited in any way, shape or form. Not only that, but I saved myself thousands of dollars in the process. win/win.
Now, I realize that if I need to go into the 10 gigabit range I'll have a bus problem, but until then I'll stick with what I've got.
I don't know much about local free calls, but I found it quite easy to dial my friend in Germany and when the automatic operator said "Please insert three dollars for the first 15 minutes (or whatever the rate was), it accepted my home built tone generator that generated quarter tones. Worked like a charm. I seem to remember it only working with AT&T pay phones...
You know, before John handsomely paid to have Killcreek's boobs pumped up 3 sizes with disgusting silicone, she wasn't all that hot... As long as she keeps her boobs covered with something, they look ok.
The fanatical pro-lifers that you're trolling for here aren't going to respond.
Why? Simply put, because fanatical pro-lifer types aren't very technically inclined. I am sure that most of them think of the Internet as a series of tubes and is probably easily offended by daily "Internets" to their inboxes advertising viagra.
Seriously though, I've spoken with many pro-lifers. My experience suggests that pro-lifers generally have a low IQ (sub 100). They are fanatical about their beliefs and their opinions.
As an after thought, Scientologists should target this group. Win/win.

Net Neutrality or Not?

You're exactly right.
Personally, I don't mind if an ISP gives higher priority to say, voice packets over data ones. I don't mind if they give a higher priority to SSH sessions to reduce lag. Giving priority per packet type is certainly acceptable and Mike McCurry (from TFA) uses this as an arguement on his platform of promoting Net Neutrality (oddly enough). However, priority because of the name of the company providing the packet is a huge NO!
Hasn't this already happened? The network infrastructure is the hardware and the apps running on top is the software. I remember when IBM laughed at Microsoft saying that the profits are in the hardware, not the software; and look how they were wrong.
I think telco companies are finally starting to realize that the big bucks in the Internet game is not in the wire, but in the applications themselves.
From the site: In accordance to the licenses' terms MediaServices pays license fees for all materials downloaded from the site subject to the Law of the Russian Federation "On Copyright and Related Rights".
I would put all my money on the fact that allofmp3 doesn't pay a dime to no one and all that money stays in their pockets.
How should I know, I only own a Russian company and deal with licenses and Russian government on a daily basis (nice Cognac for the men in suits, expensive chocolates for the ladies in charge and you're all good to go).
Ok, everyone has their experiences, but my experience has been going on for 3 years now. I'm living in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Downtown, many bars, clubs and restaurants speak decent english because of the tourists. I live in the north of the city, last metro stop. Someone able to speak english in my district is nothing short of a miracle.
KFG's arguement about how many Americans speak Russian is not really valid. I've never known Russian to be considered an international language.
Speaking of re-writing history, look no further than this story's intro: "Steve Wozniak, co-inventor of the Apple personal computer (along with Steve Jobs)..."
Steve Wozniak is the sole inventor of the Apple personal computer.
I've thought about doing the integration part, but it just looks ugly and feels wrong to me for some reason.
Instead, what I've done is create functions for most of the html commands I use so each.php file is 100% php from top to bottom. Using a php accelerator can help cache the entire script for faster operation.
For example, using some functions I've put together, A page might look something like this: table(); tr(); td(); iprint("Here's some text"); _td(); _tr(); _table();
Further, I have another function tied into it all that creates the correct number of whitespace characters for viewing the source on the above woud look like: <TABLE> <TR> <TD> Here's some text </TD> </TR> </TABLE>
This way, source view and source code are very neat and tidy.
Looks like OS X 10.5 Leopard will be released before Vista then
Not only that, but it also looks like both Mac and Linux are going to beat Vista feature for feature by 2007...minus all the DRM crap.
By 2007, every single linux distro will have fully accelerated 3d desktops, better personal search capability (Beagle w/inotify) and all the visual bells and whistles Vista will be able to shake a stick at.. without a 6 tiered pricing plan.
I don't know if anyone has noticed, but both Apple and open source projects are able to do things in a fraction of the time it takes MS to do the same. Both Apple and open source projects have been moving forward very quickly. Here's a good example: where was Windows in 1997. Compare it to today. Not a radical difference. Not many new features. Things run smoother, that's about the biggest change. Now look at a linux desktop in 1997. Compare it to today. whoa.... major strides forward.
Perhaps 2006 is the year that the linux desktop catches and passes MS.
With as much yay being distributed around the UCSB campus, it's not surprise the abundance of it caused some students to include it into their next lab project!
This is a very good question, and no where on the Ekiga site does it say, "You can use Ekiga with SIP services from Vonage, SIPDiscount and others!"
The FAQ makes it seem like Ekiga will *only* work with services from Diamond.
I'm totally lost here; I was using Skype until Ebay took over and the linux port supporting ALSA was dropped. Then, I moved to Gizmo, dropped $10 for PC to phone calls and the service is 100% unusable (drop outs, really bad delay, echo problems, you name it).
All I want to do is use linux to make PC to phone calls. I'm thinking that perhaps using Ekiga and some service like Voange is a possibility. Can anyone vouch for this? What are my options?
I am a web developer for a few high traffic sites.
Nothing pains me more than to code for Firefox (I develop in Linux). Once the Firefox test passes, check it in IE (via vmware). Usually there will be a few tweaks to get everything right in IE. Once IE passes, then I check it with Konqueror and Safari (and boy, do I just wanna cry then). Many sections of code have been completely rewritten because both konqueror and Safari has such bizarre behavior.
So, Konqueror (and possibly Safari), while passing the ACID2 test, fails with other basics in web standards. I'm tired of coding for 4 browsers. Honestly, my life would be much easier if Safari, Konqueror and Opera would all just die. Let Mozilla and MS duke it out.
So you'd never hire a Windows admin to take care of the local workstations used by the UNIX and mainframe admins?
WTF? Do unix and mainframe admins actually use windows as a desktop? I don't believe it.
Do you expect someone who spends every minute of their day babysitting an OS/390 server to keep track of which patches should be installed on his SuSE workstation?
Yes. If you think this is time consuming or difficult, I suggest you have another look at Linux since 1998.
I've been unix/linux admin for 15 years. How it usually works is: the windows admin takes care of all the windows workstations while the unix admin takes care of all the servers AND the windows admin. The windows admin usually has limited access to resources and needs to to ask the unix admin for additional permissions when necessary.
I have never met a single, experienced unix admin that uses windows for a desktop, unless it's for playing games after hours or for testing purposes. Typically, a unix admin will use a product like VMWare for windows testing (as it provides for easy rollback).
Also in my experience, the windows admins typically take care of things like workstation patching, application maintenence and user error. The unix admin will take care of things like shared resources and services, backup plans and the overall health of the network.

I just download the boot image, slap it on a thumbdrive and boot from that to do your network install.

You're either a troll or an idiot. Take your pick.
For us Americans living in Europe..
how hard would it be to set up some kind of skype proxy stateside so I can take advantage of the free US to US calls?
You fail your American citizenship test. The answer should be obvious. Violence good. Sex bad.
How the hell is the parent a troll? That statement is perfectly valid.
Jeez, does the truth hurt or something?

I'm not ashamed of being successful, no matter how many people like yourself resort to name calling to "prove" something.

oops, the first line should not have said,

Replace Firefox with Safari.
