How is this not upfront: they're giving away a tool that allows some shops to use more windows machines rather than adding unix machines. It's pretty damn clear what the motive is, so you can decide if it does you good or not, and use it or not use it accordingly.

I'll bet you think the free donut at Krispy Kreme is immoral too.

Really, any web site that has significantly different content than you would expect from the name is lame - so I don't shed any tears for cybersquatters who loose their domains.

Yes, I know this came directly from tomshardware.com. They should know better too. ;) Now that I think about it, I'm way too detail oriented.

  4. Short-term goals on How Do You Get Work Done? · · Score: 1

I'm easily distracted from boring things, but here are a few things that have helped me:

    1. Have a buddy who depends on you for help. When he calls at 10am asking for help on a problem that you haven't started, you start working on it.

    2. Prioritize, but don't be afraid to switch between tasks sometimes. I still do this at work: if I'm getting nowhere on one task, I switch to something that I can make immediate progress on (sucks when all you have left is the hard stuff, but that means you got the rest done!). Don't consider fun stuff as an alternative to tough problems.

    3. Small goals, small rewards. No more oreos until you finish the next paragraph. And hey, if you get on a roll just keep going. Even if you don't finish everything at once, you'll have less to finish later.

    4. "Anything worth doing is worth doing half assed." I've spent 10 minutes trying to figure out a sentence without typing a word (and then gotten distracted). If I type a rough draft and fix it later I can get on to the parts that I already have worked out in my head.

Maybe they should sue users dumb enough to buy the product after hearing about this activation scheme. In case you haven't been paying attention, the activation prevents you from printing old returns if you change your computer hardware. You're supposed to keep old returns for 7 years and NO ONE keeps the same computer configuration for that long. Therefore, electronic copies of your returns become unprintable (therefore unusable)... not my idea of smart.

So, if you've been inside a walmart, why would you ever want to go back?

Unless I need something immediately (so I have to go to BB or CC) or it's extremely heavy, I buy online. And once you're online, why still buy from an overpriced store like bestbuy.com when buy.com (or the myriad of mom-n-pop stores you can find through price search engines) have better prices? Sales tax will be a pain, but I'd still avoid both the mortar and brick stores AND their online counterparts when I can pay 75% as much elsewhere. The online counterparts to BB, CC, and WM exist only for the ignorant (who flock to brand names) and for small items that aren't worth shopping around for a better price.

BTW, I don't know about WM but BB and CC always charged sales tax because if they have a store in your state they have to charge sales tax. It's only the companies that exist only in the sending state, not the recieving state, that got to skip out on sales taxes.

And remember that few businesses want to incur the cost of replacing their entire software suite on their servers (you'll spend way more on that than the hardware itself if you do anything more than run an exchange server), so Opteron has a good advantage there (if it ever arrives).

I agree that modifying the content in any way and reselling is obviously against the law and mostly just stupid.

Anyway, if you don't want to see nudity, don't watch Titanic. On the other hand, the filtering software that plays the ORIGINAL media and simply doesn't play the "undesired" parts is probably within the rights of the consumer. If I cut a wire in my DVD player and only watched the even scanlines for a DVD I'd be within my rights, because the disc itself is unmodified. Granted I think the people who use filtering software/hardware should be sterilized because we don't need them reproducing or raising children (as another reader mentioned: the ratings system was created for a reason...kids aren't supposed to watch R-Rated films).

I think the results of such suits are more likely to be greater restrictions rather than punative damages for the results of product use.

It depends on how you look at it. On one side, it's always too late because if it was just a little sooner a lot of damage could be avoided. Hindsight is always 20/20... On the other hand, it's never too late to do some good, even if it's not as much good as it would have been 10 years ago.

  20. If you can't budget, you can't stay in business on Recording Industry Extinction Predicted RSN · · Score: 1

Besides the obvious answer (to the executives' pockets) where is all of the money going? I don't believe that it costs as much to produce an album as it does to make a movie, and the costs to replicate CDs is almost nothing compared to DVDs (which are also cheaper these days).

So the main problem here isn't that people aren't willing to pay for music, it's that labels are so inefficient and wasteful (and corrupt) that they can't produce a quality product for a reasonable price. If they were efficient they should be able to stay rich by dropping the sales prices to $5 per album, or by including a lot of extras, thereby maintaining sales. A lot of people prefer a nice professionally produced disc, but the price is just higher than it's worth.

And yes, if they promise 32k games my first thought is 32Kb games... most of those games would have to be freeware and shareware computer (or other emulated) games that would be delivered by their online service because they're not worth a CD (unless you get them all on one CD when you buy the console).

  25. Inefficient! on Programming Languages Will Become OSes · · Score: 1

Bah. It's an interesting concept but the fact is we evolved OSs and programming languages as *layers*, one on top of the other, to increase efficiency. The point is that everyone on some platform (say NT-based) has a common set of interfaces. However, to program NT I don't need to know all of the windows API calls unless I really need to delve into them. I can use C++, or run IDL, or maybe even code some assembly. If each was its own OS, I'd have to reboot into that OS rather than switching applications, so having a single entity would be very ineffective for any real engineer.
