Those people have no idea how the music business works. Because unless you're Alanis Morissette or Dave Mathews, you're not making money on the road. - -qtd from article @ salon
That's such BS.. I've been a HUGE dave matthews fan for quite a while.. he lets his fans record his music, and trade his shows... as long as it's not being sold and a profit isn't being made OF HIS NAME, he's ok about it. heck he even let people do sound board recordings at one time..
same thing with phish, grateful dead, and tons of other bands out there
my philosophy on this whole thing, is that if you're just NATURALLY GOOD.. people will know about you.. so why would you need to complain??
worked with ICQ.. Winamp.. hell, even Slashdot. I remember linking to slashdot from some web board, and then frequently I would hear people talk about it, and finally it became a haven for myself..
but that's not REALLY what I was trying to get at.. the thing with artists is that these days, everyone is one.. with software programs that could par up against recording studios, it's disgusting how a sucky performer can actually sound good..
from personal experience.. i'm thinking of the band: Bran Van 3000... got their mp3.. drinking in la.. it was a pretty cool song.. saw them on jay leno.. and they blew.. saw them live.. and they were actually pretty good.. the moral of my ramblings.. well.. artists shouldn't be worried about profits made from cd's.. my idea of thought is that.. distribute the music.. BE GOOD.. and make your bucks of the tours that you go on... and if you're good.. then you wouldn't worry about your music being gimp'd.. in contrast to bv3k.. i've heard that elton john's candle in the wind song a bazillion times.. and then I think I saw him on jay leno or soem talkshow.. he played it again.. and i thought it was the most beautiful thing i had ever heard..
Maybe I'm not understanding the politics or technical intensity of this. But if this is going to cause such a huge issue with compatibility, and we know that it is... then it seems to me that an appropiate solution would be NOT to implement Win2K in an environment where you know it's going to be a bitch..
and with the sudden surge of popularity in free stuff, the solution seem kind of obvious.. but this isn't one of those "USE LINUX, LINUX RULES" rants.. there are several other solutions out there.. roll your own.
in a quasi-digital-everything-online-and-automated world, it's freaking ANNOYING to have to go thru the painful process of doing ANYTHING with Network Solutions.. is it too hard to for them to make things a little bit more intuitive and easier for everyone???
So anyway, I bought a couple of domains thru Register.com, and I have to say that I'm extremely impressed with their service.. and unlike Netsol, everything (dns, user info, blah blah this and that) is done without sending emails all over the place.
my only quirk is that they make transfering registrars a lengthy, somewhat legal and troublesome process.. but that will probably change..
at the risk of sounding like a numbnut what's the current status of USB2? support under linux? I've heard numbers that put this puppy miles ahead of firewire.. --.. cheers
---- ---- ---- I just got off the phone with InterNIC.. at the 1-888 number..
Good lord, apparently there is some sort of masss media and conspiratory confusion..
the username/passwd combo is NOT to your domain dot com, org or net name.. but for your free web-based email account (InterNIC's implementation of a hotmail.com, USA.net, atdot.org accounts, etc)..
I can't possibly imagine the amount of calls they have been recieving with people probably yelling and ranting at them..
Anyway... it actually took about 15 seconds to speak with a person.. no JOKE.. and that was twice.. once to update my WHOIS info, and another time to verify that they recieved my update via FAX..
Both times the guy on the phone was totally calm and a complete pleasure to talk to..
These guys seriously rock, I have a total new respect for InterNIC.. I'm usually one to immediately assume things never go accordingly to plan, because if they did, that would be too simple, but seriously.. these guys rock..
my one quirk is that I wish they made the online forms a little more intuitive, that whole, remail to hostmaster@internic.net, yadda yadda thing sort of defeats the purpose of ONLINE FORMS.. oh well, like I said.. that would be too easy =)
I would think that a lack of support exists because of two reasons
1) who the heck is Alan Turing. I mean, _I_ know he conceptualized the idea of the universal machine. the one that does anything and everything. but what about the average joe, which there are more of than techies, probably isn't going to want to support this guy because they don't know what the universal machine is all about, eVEN if they use one.. the concept is pretty confusing but nevertheless, it is an interesting one..
2) why would ANYONE want to build a statue of Alan Turing? You ask any marketing person.. anyone to mention a name that they associate with computers, a name, a person's name.. and chances are, they'll say someone like Gates or Jobs or Moore.. hmmm, well, the average joe might think, "Why not build a a statue of him, or him?" I use a marketing person in my example because I know of a couple and they really piss me off because all they do all they is sit around and praise windows and how it's awesome this and awesome that.. and how they can go work for microsoft to make big bucks.. fair enough, big bucks motivate.. though I personally couldn't care less what they think..
But the point I'm trying to make is that chances are, unless your a nerd, or a geek, or a computer aficionado (oooh, did I spell that right?) chances, are you probably never knew who Alan Turing was or what the universal machine is.. and if I was put in that situation, I'd probably click the "back" button...
This isn't the first time I've heard someone plug Jabber.. I think what they have there are a lot of good ideas, but as for the implementation and effort to produce an actual client or server.... well, I haven't seen that yet..
So basically what this seems to me is a whole lot of hot air, snake oil and inevitable, just another vaporware product
so your pitting NT against Linux. Does anyone else see the sense in this? They're pitting a FREE OS against an OS that has the force of GIANT, COLOSSAL software company behind it.
I mean, take as it is now, Linux is completely free, NT isn't. That's one of the biggest bitch to deal with. 'Sponsored' or not, I think this is still an unbelievable milestone. In a few years, the competition (NT) won't even be able to hold up to Linux.
NOTE: The fact that Linux doesn't have as much to lose as NT does...
The fact that the Linux setup is MUCH MUCH cheaper than it's NT counterpart...
As far as I'm concerned, for now, these SPONSORED events can 'lie' or 'misconfigure' the system all they want....
I suggest we don't get our titties twisted in knot... give it a while, at this rate, Linux will prevail

this is truely an amazing feat that could ONLY have been accomplished with the community uniting as one, finally the people are running things the way the people want to run things. there's something really philosophical and true to meaning that's to be said but for the likes of me I can't think of anything to say...
Although, aren't crashing servers, voice mail systems going down, and people receiving threats perhaps a little too harsh?!??!
The dispute it over, but how it got there is pretty frightening..
t'is unfortunate that people with your "don't give a shit" attitude exist.. people like you should be brought out into the courtyard and raped by deformed circus midgets on estrogen... =)
I think he was referring to the idea of integrating, either entirely or modularly, the Eudora email client as part of the Mozilla browser (nightly builds available from mozilla.org) and not the Netscape that is availible from Netscape.com
It seems like a good idea..
And what are u smoking about Netscape being programmed in Java?? I think you're on drugs if you think Java is ownly useful for "tickers and animated web toys." Obviously, you don't know jack!
