Ok, despite the fact that this is blatently offtopic, I just had to point out that it has to be one of the funniest things I have ever read... Right up there with the "How to tell if your kid is a hacker" bit.
GENIOUS!
Advice: Read the HUNDREDS of posts on the gentoo forums about this.
The fact of the matter is that portage is plenty fast. Any speed boosts given to the actual emerge program set would be negligable because of the sheer amount of time dedicated to compiling.
More Advice: Stop trolling.
When you say that "Portage was a good idea, and is a HORRIBLE implementation" you really need to enumerate WHY it's a horrible implementation. Take this common troll as an example. Example 1: Windows is a HORRIBLE OS. Example 2: Windows is a HORRIBLE OS because being locked into the choices Microsoft made in my "interests" are usually counter-productive.
See the difference? Example 1, while in many people's oppinion is valid, leaves people wondering why Windows is horrible. Example 2 gives anybody reading specific evidence and also allows anybody that wants to defend the point areas to do so.
I love the way that gentoo handles packages. I, admitingly, have a BSD bias, but it still allows my system to be what I want. The feature set is anything but 'insane,' but once again, I have no idea why you think so, so I can't exactly defend that against any reasons you have.
Reply to this post and we might actually have some decent points to give to the gentoo team to make inprovements.
I thought this exact same thing.
Every time I see a simple 'sollution' to a 'problem' like this, I always have to give the creator credit due to them... I don't care whether it's for the linux kernel or to send me pills for a larger penis, it's still ingenious.
I'm sorry, but I swear that if I see another one of these 'Their server must be running on *Insert device in article here*' trolls, I'm going to shoot somebody.
That is an excelent point. I was once working on a time card program for a buisness a few years ago. I was relativly new at programming in the real world (I was still in High School, actually) and after the intital program was 'finished' and we introduced it into the current setup, we had to fix bugs. After fixing bugs, and fixing the bugs that the previous fixes introduced, I realized that if I would have written the program using a different layout, the entire system would just be better. I didn't ever completely rewrite the program, but I did slowly migrate the codebase over to the new layout (all in all, I guess I probably rewrote the thing from scratch again... but it didn't seem that way).
This is why I'm glad I started out using slackware. 90% of people think it's actually hard to compile your own software. You have 2 options 1) use a source based distro (gentoo, sourcerer would be best) 2) make your own distro
I GUARENTEE that if you follow the directions on the gentoo install page, that you won't have one problem. Any of the serious obsticles I've had with gentoo are user errors (I get bored during an emerge, start reading ahead, and skip a step). I never have been able to get sorcerer to install, but Gentoo works perfectly
Ok, I know that you're a troll, but I'm going to respond anyway. 1) I know this sidesteps the issue a bit, but when you look at FDRs stance in WWII he OPENLY disregarded the fact that genocide was being commited by the German people. He completely turned the other cheek. And, in the early days of Japan's impirialism, we actually supported them by selling them fuel, rubber, and steel! That was bullshit. 2) The difference between Bush and FDR/Churchill is that Bush openly admitted that he would kill innocent civillians. FDR and Churchill didn't. I know you're going to bring up Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but you'd be wrong. That wasn't FDR OR Churchill. That was Wilson, and yes, I think that in the long run, it was a VERY bad thing. But, at the time, we didn't even know what the effects of radiation would be on the Japanese people, so while it's still an attrocious crime against humanity, at the time, we didn't know just how bad it would be. 2) You make it sound like killing German and Japanese civillians is OK, just because their leaders were fuckheads. Wrong again, buddy. The killing of non-military persons is a war crime, and if Churchill and FDR would have openly said that the killing of Civillians was OK, then I say we should have tried them in International court. But, they tried at all costs to avoid civillian casualties. Something bush didn't do.
So, I'd suggest you start cracking those history books again, because your views on the world are very elementary. Don't forget to celebrate Christopher Columbus day, too! (In case you didn't know, CC openly and knowingly gave Native Americans blankets infected with smallpox. If you read his diaries, you'll see that CC HATED Native Americans, and we celebrate this man?)
Nobody in their right mind would ever say that Saddam was a saint. Certain groups are sure to look at him as a martyr, though. People have to realize that America isn't always right, and especially when dealing with the Middle East, people don't like us. Saddam (in some groups) WILL go down as someone who stood up to the Western world. I'm not saying that is right, but that's the way things will work.
Take North Korea for example. The people living under the tyranny of Kim-Jung-Il honestly believe that they have the best life they could get, given their sircumstance. They are brainwashed to believe that the US started the Korean war. Is their view on the world right? No. But, do they believe it? Yes.
You do, bring up another very good point, though. You said that the French and Russians wanted a piece of the pie after the dirty work was done.
What evidence do you have to back this up?
Because as far as I can tell, the oil rights have been given to American Companies. No offense to the Iraqi people, but they don't have much else to build an infrastructure off of (again, because of the sanctions), and we gave the oil rights to an American company (Ok... granted, the Iraqi people will get a cut, but why not build up their oil infrastructure and then give all of it to them... if we really cared about the people of Iraq, that's what would happen)
What I'm trying to say here is that the US is the one that is trying to get something for nothing.
For example, first we give the UN the finger and invade iraq. THEN we ask them for money and support to rebuild it. What truely good organization would disregard the fact that over 50% of Iraqis don't have a job because the US overthrew the government and bombed the factiories that gave them employment. And, of these 50% another 50% (25% of the Iraqi people) are employed by the US, which means that they will no longer have a job when we pull out.
Again, what TRUELY good organization could refuse to help the people of Iraq. The US knows this, and they are exploiting it. The US realized that by engaging in neo-empirialism, that the UN would back us up once we got so far to help the people.
End of story. This war may have looked like it had a humanitarian goal, but when one looks at the after effects (50% unemployment MONTHS after the 'war ended'... that is unexcusable), you'll see that Americans now own the oil infrastructure, and the people of Iraq are much worse off. Their situation might improve, but if you look to my parent post, you'll see that the democracy we're trying to implement, will cause even more tension in the middle east.
People always as me what I think about the war, and I tell them "I think we should win." I don't agree with the reasoning behind why we went to war, but I think that now that we are there, we need to give control back to the people of Iraq as soon as possible.
WOAH!
You're saying that it's the French and Russians fault that this was allowed to happen?
Bullshit.
The sanctions themselves were the problem. Iraq couldn't import vital items like CHLORINE, a critical ingredient for the purification of water.
THIS is a human rights violation (in a sense) worse than anything that Saddam did. Allowing innocent children die due to poor water is a GROSS violation of human rights. These childred were dieing by the THOUSANDS because THE UNITED STATES wouldn't let them import critical water/food treatment chemicals.
Granted, a lot of the problems wouldn't have existed if Saddam wouldn't have been in power, but the fact still remains that the US allowed these sanctions to destroy the people of Iraq.
And, we can't forget the fact that Bush OPENLY ADMITTED that there would be civillian casualties. This was in direct violation of the Geneva convention.
Here's the proof
Step off your high horse and realize that Bush was just as bad for openly killing thousands of innocent civillians, as Saddam was for killing his people.
In a certain light, Bush is even worse because he brought it upon himself (against nearly every other country in the world) to force democracy down the throats of Iraq.
Look at political philosophers that specialize in the middle east and you'll see that DEMOCRACY WON'T WORK IN THE MIDDLE EAST. There are so many opposing groups (and I'm not talking Democrats vs Republicans opposition... I'm talking about 'willing to suicide bomb' opposition) in Iraq, that there will NEVER be a clear majority in favor or in opposition of any proposition that a democratic government needs to work.
All democracy will succeed at doing is commiting cultural genocide in the region, and that is by far the worst kind of dehuminization imaginiable. If I were to die, it wouldn't be as large a deal, because people would still be able to carry on my heritage. If my culture is taken away, I might as well not even live because something was taken away from me that can NEVER be replaced. These people are being raped of their herritage to satisfy Big Oil (tm)!
That's the real war crime.
Out of curiosity, why did your company consider it a bad thing that Blender exported to a 3rd party app for raytracing?
To me, it would seem like this is an advantage, because then you aren't locked in to one raytracer.
Plus, Povray is AWESOME. I was hopelessly addicted to making a recreation of a Dr. Seuss scene. It was my first real project using povray (aka non chrome ball over green and white checkers) and it turned out VERY decently!
povray is VERY professional grade software.
check out these for what povray is really capable of.
like Dreamweaver or Frontpage, real webmasters probably wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole.
That reminds me of my last job. I was the 'IT Director' (aka computer repair dude with a fancy title) and part of my duties was to admin the webserver.
Long story short, I decided to leave that job when the head webdesign lady told me "I don't know HTML and I don't plan on learning it." I'm not kidding, those were her EXACT words. Apparently she was just using frontpage (which COMPLETELY fucked up a bunch of SSIs everywhere, making my job a living hell).
I know it was offtopic, but your comment made me think about it.
I don't get how this was modded as interesting. 1) Sun doesn't make NEARLY as much money off of its software as it does its hardware. The software is just custom made to work REALLY WELL under that hardware. 2) SUN IS ALREADY ADOPTING LINUX. It's not trying to stay "one step ahead." 3) There already is a upgrade path to Linux from Solaris... it's called "Install Linux, Install the software from the Solaris machine to the linux box, and copy over and required data"
You must be kidding... The post that you replied to was what is commonly known as a troll. If he/she/it honestly thinks that the only two relevent platforms on the x86 architecture are windows and linux, I guarentee that he/she/it is no older than 15.
It's like the saying goes: "People use Linux because they hate Windows. People use BSD because they love UNIX"
FreeBSD supports 90% of linux software with nearly NO decrease in performance (and the software it doesn't support relies on kernel specific calls). Plus, if you use the 4.* series, it's rock solid.
Your work make a great decision in switching to FreeBSD (If you ever decide to make the switch to unix on the desktop though, definatly go with linux... trust me. FreeBSD is doable, but it can be a pain).
This is one of those ideas that is truely foriegn to the Corporate world. They aren't trying to better people's computing experience for any reason other than the money. Bill Gates doesn't care how well his product serves the people, just that it works 'better' than everything else. They are selling a PRODUCT. Linux is selling SUPPORT. If MS were to do this, nobody would need to upgrade to XP/Longhorn/etc. It just doesn't make sence for their financial model.
Well, that would make sense. My theory behind this support is that the two programs are VERY similar (they literally are based on the same code), so Sun is just trying to open another cash flow by offering support for a program that is essentially the same as the one they currently support. For example, if you offered support for your own proprietary version of notepad, wouldn't it make sence to offer support to notepad as well. You get paid either way, so why open as many channels for money to flow through as possible.
So, the reason that they don't offer support for OSX is because they don't have any experience with it themselves, otherwise they probably would.
compiled with -o4 -funroll-loops and Open Office 1.1.1 installed with Ximian enchancements
I'm hoping that was a typo, because I'm 90% sure that there is no -O4 option to GCC. -O(1|2|3|s) is valid, but -O4 doesn't do jack. (which might be why you aren't getting the performance you should.)
Another option would be to put your proccessor in make.conf (Can't remember where it is off th top of my head, but scan through make.conf and you'll find it). It will then use processor specific optimizations to speed up programs. This will effectivly make any binaries processor specific (ie p3 binaries can only run on a p3), but it should speed things up even more.
Gentoo 1.4 with kernel 2.6.0-test12 exclusiveley for games thanks to the Optimized gaming kernel and WineX
Sorry dude, but that just makes me thing you're a troll. Those two are mutually exclusive. You can't be running 2.6.0-test* while at the exact same time running the gaming sources. can't happen unless you are running bochs or something, in which case it's no wonder you're getting horrible performance.
My suggestion would be to install the binary port for openoffice (ie emerge openoffice-bin). Sometimes the larger programs seem to choke on certain processor optimizations. For example, I had problems when I compiled my own firebird, so I installed the binary version, and it fixed everything.
Either do that, or try recompiling it with the -Os option. Since it will be optimized for size, it won't take as long to load the binary into memory, and you'll (hopefully) see some performance gains. This seems to be the common consensus on the gentoo forums, anyway.
My guess is that it's not TRUE support (ie You can't call up and ask how to align your margins just so). It's more likely that this is just "Put the CD in the tray, click this, then that, etc."
OR, since StarOffice and OpenOffice.org are so similar, Sun feels that they can support both (I'm guessing this wouldn't be the free support). To be honest, it makes sence to try to open a new cash flow, because the products are VERY similar.
No offense, but the two products are so similar that it wouldn't be too difficult to learn how do do things yourself. The ONLY major setback would be if your class utilized the scripting language of Office (in my experience, most Office-centric intro classes don't do this.)
I honestly don't see how this was modded Informative... This is the same GPL vs BSD flamewar that has been going on for a while now. It's definatly NOT informative. The BSDs choose to use a BSD style liscence because they don't care about having a huge market share. They just want very good software EVERYWHERE. There is little hope in hiding the fact that nearly EVERY OS uses BSD code somewhere (usually in the network stack). BSD style liscences are GREAT for standards, because then any operating system that wants to implement that standard can just copy and paste the source. It doesn't matter whether it's open or closed source. Linux trolls just have this screwy view on the real world. GPL is great for the open source community, but that's it! BSD is great for the computer industy as a whole. To be honest, I don't care what operating system I use, as long as it get's the job done. It just so happens that right now, linux (on the desktop) get's the job done better than anything else. You really need to get your head out of the corporate mindset, and realize that you don't have to turn a profit to be successful.
DISCLAIMER: This isn't a flame, trust me. The views and ideas expressed here are intended to open the mind of a GPL whore. Mod this down if you think it's nessisary.
The death of one is a tradegy, but the death of millions is a statistic
For all of you that are curious, this isn't a BSD troll (although it could be...).
My point here is that whenever a larger *NIX server is broken in to, there are ALWAYS people that comlain about "the insecurity of *NIX". Well, when ONE large *nix server is broken in to, it makes it to the front page of slashdot, whereas blaster/sobig/etc usually get a story or two.
This is where the quote above comes into play.
Linux might look insecure, but that's because we usually hear about breakins on a 1 server basis. When we here about Windows, it's usually in the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS (if not more). If there was a slashdot story for every one of THOSE servers, then it would appear the way it actually is.
Ok, despite the fact that this is blatently offtopic, I just had to point out that it has to be one of the funniest things I have ever read... Right up there with the "How to tell if your kid is a hacker" bit. GENIOUS!
Out of curriosity, how plausable would it be to 're-apply' just a coat of the calcium carbonate after the 5 years is up?
Would spraying a layer of CaCO4 be enough?

This is why people stay with Windows. I already posted a retort to this... so in order to save myself some time, here's the link:
