  1. Educational TV... on India Launches World's First Education Satellite · · Score: 4, Interesting

I am reminded of when -- back in the 50's -- the State of Indiana sent an airplane up in the air every school day. It circled around and around, broadcasting educational films to every school in the state that had a receiver. Ain't nuttin' new under the sun... -- TE

  2. My Wife Make Collages... on Making Stuff Out Of Broken Computer Equipment? · · Score: 2, Interesting

My wife makes and sells custom collages out of old parts... typically framed 3' x 4' works of three-dimensional art.

Kewl in hi-tech lobbies, conference rooms, offices etc. Much better than sending the stuff to a landfill.

    See example.

  3. Re:Nice and portable, unlike the original... on Adding Background Noise To Your Phone Call · · Score: 1
About 15-20 years ago I was taken to a bar/restaurant in Milwaukee. As I recall it was named "The Safe House," and was decorated to look like a place Jame Bond and his fellow agents might use for relaxation. (The concept was outdated even then time... but so campy bad it was good. May be still around, for all I know... the cleverly named menu items were pretty tasty as I recall.)

Anyway, it had such a phone booth, with buttons for Office, Airport and several other appropriate sounds you'd want people to hear so as to not think you were calling from a bar.

    What goes around comes around.

  4. Microsoft's Open Source Test Lab? HaHaHaHaHa...! on Meet Martin Taylor Of Microsoft's Open Source Test Lab · · Score: 1

Neither "LOL" nor "ROTFL" can do it any more. Anybody have a new-and-improved acronym along the lines of "YASFOI"* or "MYBFIH"* or whatever...? *(e.g., "You Are So Full Of It..." or "May You Burn Forever In H*ll"? Probably not nearly strong enough, though...) --TE

  5. Community Computer Courses... on What Should a Community Computer Lab Offer? · · Score: 3, Informative

Good question. I teach "Adult Continuing Education" (non-credit) computer stuff part-time at my local community college. My student's LOVE anything that saves them money... e.g.... . StarOffice/OpenOffice (instead of MS Office)... . using a free service such as MyDomain.com to "alias" their email and/or web space... . student discounts at sites such as www.academicsuperstore.com ... . shareware and freeware offerings at www.shareware.com ... . PopUp ad blockers such as www.webwasher.com ... ...and so on. See http://eselgroth.com/computers.html (Not exactly a stand-alone page... it's designed to support my classes). _Very _basic newbies are enthralled by "tips" such as keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl-X = 'Cut'), Line Returns (Ctrl-Return), "Tab" to jump to the next whatever, email using "bcc", exploiting "phrase quotes" and "+" or "-" in search engines, and so on. --TE

  6. What is "Stealing"...? on Only Thieves Block Pop-Ups · · Score: 1
    Hmmm...

If I'm reading my local newspaper and elect to skip over, say, the Sports section and/or not read every entry in the Classifieds... am I "stealing" from the newspaper?

If Land's End (or whomever) snail-mails me their catalog and I happen to chuck it into the recycling bin without reading it cover-to-cover... am I stealing from Lands End?

If I happen to be watching Channel 5 instead of Channel 2, 4, 7, 9, etc.... am I stealing from all the stations other than Channel 5?

If I'm in the car listening to radio station WAAA and then switch to station WBBB... am I stealing from WAAA?

If I drive by a billboard but don't happen to read it... am I stealing from the billboard advertiser?

If I elect to not listen to every radio station... or watch every cable channel... or read every page of every newspaper, magazine or catalog available to me... or if I trash spam... or hang up on telemarketers...

    Am I stealing from them?

    Just curious.
