Assuming, the intention of the sentence was for the reader to understand it. I suppose you've never read James Joyce. If people wonder why great literature has died off int he latter half of the 20th century and the early part of the 21st, its precisely because of the stupid, insipid freshman composition classes that beat out any hint,or any appreciation of style. So were left with the insipid sci-fi, fantasy, Stephen King, Tom Clancy, James Paterson, and John Gresham.
We know whats going on, If you want to see the state of the code, they have nightly builds. They discuss the progress warts and all in public forums. They can't just lie about a release happening in six months, pretend its going to happen until a month from the finish. You just don't get that kind of visibility with Microsoft. Which is a shame, what they do is very difficult. Its all a big ball of mud system, everything can affect anything. If it doesn't play nice with any of their technologies, they get yelled at. I'm really just amazed Vista works at all. Not going to use it, but its interesting in the same way the duesneburg was.
oohh I was with you until you blamed it on a mouse driver. What the hell are you doing installing a beta mouse driver? What new functionality could it possibly be providing? For that mater, why did you need a mouse driver in the first place? Even back in Win 95 days I didn't need a 3rd pary mouse driver. I've been using linux since 97, and I have never needed to find a mouse driver.
In any case, I would not be suprised to find he installed a custom 3rd party alpha keyboard driver for his mac book, or something. As a mac user myself, I'm really suprised at how many vocal people are in letting people know they had a problem with their mac, that was caused by something silly they did, only to fix the problem by doing something even sillier and proclaiming Apple's greatness.
I'm not trolling, really I'm not. Its just bizarre. I've done enough tech support for friends and families to know that everyone does silly things, and often do sillier things to work around them, but they usually don't tell people about it, and they really don't proclaim Microsoft's greatness afterwards. In fact, they usually blame Microsoft.
Mod up! I was going to say the same thing. Its like saying that all assassins have given up, just because they have learned to fear me. I mean of course Gmail's spam filter works great, and I *do* strike fear into the hearts of all men, but If you aren't using gmail or me, heaven help you. I've heard that spam slows down a bit after your head has been put on the mantle of your arch nemesis, but thats just not something I have to worry about.
2. Its is the answer to all questions of speculative quantity due to its patented even-prime properties. There is no question too big or too small for it to answer.
Taxes on cigarettes are a relatively new thing. My smoking induced lung cancer dead uncle didn't pay that much in taxes on cigarettes. Still, thats a good point. Maybe all of the tax money should be siphoned off from all others and put into a trust fund for smoker related care. If they run out of money, then smokers get zero medical care from the Government.
", it was announced that Voyager 1 had crossed the termination shock and entered the heliosheath in December 2004, at a distance of 85 AU. In contrast, Voyager II began detecting returning particles suggesting it was entering the termination shock when it was only 76 AU from the sun, in May 2006. This implies that the heliosphere may be irregularly shaped, bulging outwards in the sun's northern hemisphere and pushed inward in the south.

Death is bad for society when it takes forever and costs billions in health care at the taxpayers expense. It can also be bad even when its quick and free, but require further stipulations.
Your not going to find a shareholder thats not holding stock to make money. In this case the management clearly lied to them about their prospects to boost the stock price, as they unloaded theirs when it was at its highest. As other people has speculated, that seems more to be legally wrong, than simple capitalistic greed.
thats not a troll. If someone really wants a browser that has no security problems, but does not try to prevent security problems of its plugins, they should be using a browser without plugins, or one that is not widely distributed. This attitude led to IE's ( as well as many of Windows) security problems. When it comes to programs, They must behave as their brothers keepers. To not do so, is an act of negligence that harms the entire internet community.
I agree with your logic extension. If the operating system can prevent a security problem, it should as long as it can differentiate between the malicious behavior and normal application behavior. This is why such things as SELinux exist. Every part of the program in the stack should be responsible for its security and prevent any of its children from doing bad things as much as possible.
Yes it is. I used to work with modems extensively. I had to simulate line noise and what not to test the reliability of our custom x/z modem implementations. I spent a lot of time talking into the the line on a connected phone. I tried connecting many many times, it only happened once that actually connected. Still, one of my proudest accomplishments.
I don't want a large number of people using a browser that doesn't take security seriously. programs have bugs, many of them turn out to be exploitable. For the good of everyone using the net, the dominant technologies should be those that minimize the threat of malicious code. We're just beginning to see the damage that can be wrought by bot nets. So I would hope that in light of your preferences, you would use lnyx, or create your own browser and never share it with anyone else.
Have you actually tried doing it? I'd be interested to find out what actually happens and what connection speeds are possible. I understand the compression issues, but the modem sends pretty clear tones. I guess it depends on the compression. If it compresses with an eye towards human voice ( non exact frequencies, remove anything not noticeable), rather than just doing some blind frequency filtering then I guess it makes sense. Still, I'd expect at least 900 baud ( if you can find a modem that goes that low), I connected with my voice at 300.
Ok thats fair. Gates chairty foundation has decided that the world can be better served spending money on infrastructure like school buildings and health care than technology, I think they may ultimately be correct. That is a legitimate point that does get lost in the whole debate. Advancing the debate to DRM, is just so stupid IMHO.
Its like the loss of the creole Pig in Haiti. The breed of pigs in Haiti carried a disease like foot and mouth or something. It didn't really affect people, and wasn't a problem to Haitians. American Farmers were very afraid of it spreading to the United states. So some wonderful USAID program decided it would "help" the Haitian people by killing off the Creole Pigs and give them High agro tech American Pigs. Well, guess what. The pigs of Iowa didn't fare very well in subtropical heat, didn't have feet capable of negotiating the terrain, and refused to eat the garbage that the Creole pigs ate up. It served the American Farmers Interest in wiping out the threat to there hogs, but caused even more harm to a people already teetering on the edge of starvation.
The moral of the story, is that when you try to help people you have to do your homework and see things from their perspective to see if what you think will help them actually will.
I don't really expect the majority of slashdotters to be able to think at that depth, but its worth trying. There is a much better educated silent majority that just reads slashdot without commenting, and hey, some of them actually might be in a position to make a difference.
DRM and IP are abso-freaking irrelevant to the education of third world students. The goal is to improve education. All actions by all players should be viewed through that lens. So bring up IP and DRM, if you think that effects the education of the end users ( and please explain that non obvious point), but not because you hate MPAA and RIAA because of what they do that affect your life. We are NOT talking about you. Negroponte is upset because Microsoft is using pressure to use an inferior product at a higher price which will be worse for the students. Period.
Off the top of my head, lactose intolerance. Some people lack the enzyme necessary to digest lactose. They cannot get the same calories out of dairy products that they measure in the lab. The model is thusly flawed for failing to predict that. Just about everything we eat is digested with enzymes. Some people might have enzymes that can break down more of a substance that others can.
I think we agree on almost everything, except I'm *NOT* talking about heat losses or losses due to energy being required to continue the reaction. I'm talking about losses like "Whoops there's a hole in my pocket, there goes my change" rather than "Darn, I have to pay a toll on the highway to get to work". If that makes any sense. I'm just saying that the lab top model that we use to count the calories in food, does not perfectly match the bodies complex digestive system. Its a model, and like all models its inherently flawed, but I would suggest that its more flawed that most people realize.
127.0.0.1 !! That's amazing! I've got the same combination on my luggage!

Sweet. I need to have Microsoft design my house. I wonder if they'll make me pay for the extra dimensions, even if I don't use them.
Anyone who doesn't offer uninformed opinions on a subject, is much smarter than someone who does.

Yeah, I think the application is killer, unfortunately its only possible victim is itself.
Yeah thats why I used to use the odd numbered linux kernels ;)
Warp just isn't practical, the roads aren't capable of handling that kind of power. I'll settle for a flux capacitor.
