  1. If they do sue you on RIAA Now Targets Pirates' Parents · · Score: 5, Insightful

then you have the right to subpoena any of the artists that you are accused of sharing. Put them on the stand and ask them if they support the RIAA's suing of their customers. Ask them how much money they have lost because of file sharing. Ask them every question under the sun. Take up as much time as possible for each artist. If each Metallica member has to spend 2 days in court for every person they sue, then maybe they'll just shut their pie holes and be grateful for what their fans have given them.

  2. Jack-O says NO on The RIAA's Hit List Named · · Score: 5, Interesting

A little off topic, but on the subject of the RIAA.

Michael Jackson has denounced the RIAA

    couple o' quotes:

"I am speechless about the idea of putting music fans in jail for downloading music. It is wrong to download, but the answer cannot be jail,"

"Here in America we create new opportunities out of adversity, not punitive laws ...," he said. "It is the fans that drive the success of the music business; I wish this would not be forgotten."

It's not surprising that I actually had to do a search to find the story, although it was on the front page yesterday. It's not even on the entertainment page anymore.

  3. My 2 cents on Cheap PPC Linux Machines From IBM · · Score: 1

If IBM ends up making a market for these chips with x86 users and then opens that market up to clone vendors, that would be a good thing. Since IBM is probably going to maintain control of the chips and since the use of those chips will probably require the use of IBM-authored software running on any system using these chips I am going to stay away. Have you ever used IBM Software? It is terrible. It is almost never intuitive and never adheres to usability standards that most other software vendors follow. And from the hardware side - do you remember when IBM had control of the computer industry? Entry level PCs were beyond the reach of everyday people and serious computing power was available to a smaller community than those who can fly into space today. IBM has survived in spite of itself all these years, not because of innovation or ingenuity. If this idea were brought forward by any other company (save RIAA, SCO, and DirecTV) I would be excited about this product.

  4. This is a classic example of using the Media on Filesharing Traffic Drops After RIAA Threats · · Score: 3, Insightful

This is a classic example of using the Media as a marketing network. The RIAA gets Nielsen to say that the ratings have dropped and they send a press release to CNN in response to other sources which state otherwise. Had Nielsen said the ratings rose, we would have heard nothing more about this matter. If the reporter had actually done any work aside from making two or three phone calls and reading a press release, he would have reported cd sales increases/decreases over the same time period or maybe even suggested alternative reasons for the decrease. Instead of a complete report we have nothing more than a one sided commentary that is obviously self serving to the story's originator. It's quite absurd of an idea to think that a CNN reporter could not find an antagonistic opinion to present. There are more people to talk to about this stuff than a Kazaa backed lobbyist.

  5. Why don't the artists get paid? on MP3 Creator On Sharing Music · · Score: 2, Interesting

All of the anti-p2p pundits cite the fact that the artists deserve to get paid for their work. Since when have artists ever gotten paid for their work? Since the beginning of commerce, artists have gotten paid a pittance of the value of their work compared to what the resellers, pimps, agents, distributors, etc. make off of the work. Let's call a donkey a donkey here. This debate is really desk jockeys with lawyers versus teenagers with 20s. We're all rooting for the teenagers, but we all know they don't stand a chance.

    LOL!!!

You must have experience with a different US government than I do! The government that I've worked with would:

    1) Never check the source code
    2) If someone was supposed to, they wouldn't be smart enough to actually find a security leak
    3) If that person did find a security leak, it would get reported and filed, and the software would be distributed normally.
    4) If Norton Antivirus reported the software as a virus, Norton would be uninstalled and deemed incompatible.

I'm generally not one to flame, but...

Be prepared to let your kid cry for at least an hour before feeding them.

This is some of the stupidest advice that I have ever seen!

Newborns are NOT manipulative. Do NOT let your baby cry for an hour and a half! That only teaches the child that it is hopeless to cry for help. Newborns need to be fed every 1 1/2 to 3 hours. NEVER let your newborn sleep for more than three hours without a feeding.

Talk to your doctor about letting a baby cry and sleep training. You will find that this practice is frowned upon by the majority of the pediatric community. Babies are not animals that need to be trained. When they are hungry feed them. When they ask for attention give it to them. When they are just plain frustrated, work through it with them. You cannot expect an infant to be convenient. A baby cannot be spoiled.

  14. The day of delivery on Advice for a Dad-To-Be? · · Score: 1

I'm a new parent as of March 12. The one piece of advice I can give you that really will make a difference is this: Do not under any circumstances tell anyone when your wife goes into labor. It will be difficult to not fill in the family, and the grandparents will be upset to not be included in the experience, but your first few hours with your baby shouldn't be shared with 10+ family members. Your wife will want to feed the baby, and you will just want to sit and stare at her/him for awhile. There will be plenty of time for visits when you three get home.
