They are not cheaper than an ipad. In fact they are much more expensive. However, they are designed for use in flight environments, they have input methods specifically designed for use in flight, they are rigorously tested for interference with other devices and certified for cockpit use by the FAA. They also have larger, easier to read displays that are designed to be used in cockpits where it can be either very dark, or the sun can be shining directly on it. They are also wired into the electronics system, can integrate with the autopilot and other aircraft devices, and are not loose in the cockpit. Finally, another plus is that many and possibly all C-5 and C-17 aircraft in operation already have them.
The Air Force cooperates with and submits to the authority of the FAA except during national emergencies and within designated Military Operation Areas (in which they usually still keep the FAA abreast of their intended activities).
I found a reference that indicates the number of C-5 And C-17s that the Air Force operates to be 316 (as of 2009). It seems odd that they would consider purchasing up to 600 tablet devices per airplane for the fleet.
The FAAs position with other carriers has been that there has to be an alternate source of the information, and at least one company has gotten by with a second ipad as that source. So, I imagine that the Air Force will have to either continue to lug around the paper, or the will have to have two ipads. Personally, i wouldn't find it worth the hassle and would just use the paper charts.
Alternatively, they could buy an actual piece of equipment designed from the ground up and rigorously tested for exactly this purpose and which is permanently in the cockpit and can also be updated via subscription services. But then they wouldn't have toy ipads to play with at taxpayers expense.
I figure the divorce rate went up because people started living longer.
Of course, the statistics say 50% of marriages end in divorce, but if you consider what the others end in, well, divorce starts looking more attractive.
I find it interesting that so many people on slashdot, a site that preaches science and abhors the idea of a god, somehow still support the idea of a one true soulmate out of the 7 billion odd people on the planet.
There are lots of sexually repressed religious folk just champing at the bit to get married so they can actually start having sex.
Yes, being a Christian male really sucks. Christians aren't supposed to have sex before marriage, and women universally shun sex AFTER marriage.
Your cellphone is a dead give away where you were and what time you were there, and how much time you spend at a given place
Well, maybe it is a dead giveaway in what general part of the city you were in.
Jugdes have way too much power.
Misspelling aside, I tend to agree with you. I still cannot figure out why we have to stand up when a judge enters the courtroom. We don't stand up when the CEO enters the room. We don't stand up when the governor enters the room. We don't stand up when the president enters the room. We don't stand up when the 30 year programming veteran enters the room. Yet for some reason, you can be thrown in jail because you don't stand up when some ex-lawyer enters the room.
the sort of right wing retards who came up with "zero tolerance and mandatory punishment" policies)
I hear what you are saying, but I always felt that the zero tolerance crap was all liberal retards.
...so long as they tax violent movies and television first.
I think they should tax violent people first. Why should the law abiding pony up to pay for the unruly?
Living in Oklahoma, I can tell you that Democratic politicians in Oklahoma try to be even more outlandish than other state's democrats in order to try to be respected by their party. It's getting to where you can't even defend yourself from a punk with a gun without ending up in prison.
Bullying is not something that can be solved by just money. Give the schools/teachers enough rights to be able to deal with the problematic children, expect them to do so and hold them responsible when they don't.
Well, before we do that, we need to decide that we are not going to support the current bullying system.
I can think of dozens of different people who have all been punished for eventually standing up for themselves after getting bullied for months. Myself included. I had a bully sitting behind me in 9th grade who would hurl insults at me all the time, thump me in the back of the head, punch me from behind, and generally make me miserable all year long. Finally one day toward the end of the year, after he had done something again I turned around and told him to lay off. He hit me in the eye with a pencil. That was the last straw. I jumped out of my seat and started hitting him. He probably was a foot taller than me and outweighed me by half, but I didn't concern myself with that. The teacher came running it and broke us up. I was sent to the principal's office, my mother was called. She told them how I had been coming home with stories every day about how this kid was picking on me and that she was glad I finally stood up for myself. They gave me swats and sent me back to class where I had to put up with his crap, still sitting right behind me, for the rest of the year.
But I learned a valuable lesson. The authority is on the side of the bullies, so just let them walk all over you, or you will be punished.
Are you suggesting that a knife, made from materials that came from the earth, is not natural?
What about bullets?
it's all a line-drawing game. In reality, there is no such thing as "unnatural", unless you are a believer in the supernatural. However, human beings and their inventions, processes, and affects are considered to be either a part of nature or apart from nature depending on the current agenda at hand.
Everything was invented in France. Occasionally, it was invented in France before it was invented elsewhere.
In keeping with this thread, the Statue of Liberty was invented in France, and was not commissioned having anything in particular to due with immigration to the U.S. It was a symbol of recognition of the alliance between the French and the American colonies during the American Revolution.
Well, the 707 airframe is no longer manufactured, even for the military. Even though it apparently cost us taxpayers $244 million, the airplane itself is only worth about two to 4 million on the used market. So not worth it to fix the airframe. Cheaper to move the equipment to another working airframe.
We won't though. We like , our cheap stuff from , wall-mart, k-mart, and best buy... WAAYY too much for that. Not to mention the fact is would probably tank our economy for a generation.
No, that is not true. It would IMPROVE our economy. With equal labor laws in China, a lot of things that are built over there would be too expensive to build, manage and ship from over there and would end up getting built in the U.S. instead. Prices would go up, but that is okay because people would have jobs now.
I'm sure you can get SOME small raises staying in a company, but you generally would only leave a job for a 15-20% raise, so if you switch jobs every 18 months, the industry average, you are definitely going to outpace any raises you might get internally. I don't think they are going to raise you 10% annually. When I first started working, I worked at a company for 5 years and when I left the company I was still making basically the same as when I had started. I left that company making $36k. Five years and four companies later, I was making $180k. I'll admit that was during the boom, I got smacked back down to $42k after about 3 years of that income (but it was nice while it lasted).
Now, I have been working for the same company for 7 year and my salary has gone up 6%. If you include inflation, my salary has gone down by 16%. If you factor in ACTUAL inflation and not the bogus government numbers, my salary has gone down by about 50%.
I guess it's time for me to start company hopping again, which is a shame, because I like my job.
These "anti-compete" rules have no teeth except in a few isolated cases.
They still have imaginary teeth to a potential company that may be interested in you. They may "know" that the agreements don't hold up in court, but don't want to hassle with court or lawyers fees just in case your current employer does not "know" this.
Since we all know the only way to get a decent pay raise is to get a new job, the anti-compete agreement depresses your income whether it is legally binding or not.
What else could be better done on the Moon's than in orbit?
We could study the effects of large meteorites hitting manmade structures. It happens far more frequently on the moon than it would in orbit, and fixed base facilities can't move out of the way like a satellite can.

Fat still beats ugly hands down. At least there is something you can do about it without resorting to expensive surgery.

The hell is this doing on Slashdot? Selling advertising, just like all the other articles.
Seems I remember reading somewhere that elephants like water, too.

You're right. Whenever someone writes a new song, we should just pay them millions of dollars up front and make it public domain immediately.
Newt Gingrich is using this song? Well, then it is clearly legally protected parody.
