ahh but see your not a typical user, a normal user (ie 99% of the population) wouldnt go in to fix their laptop much less even know how to solder.
Likewise I dont know why you would want to do that, the risk of frying the board far outweighs any benifit you might get from soldering. Id rather have a laptop I needed to plug a wireless card into because the on board one fried, than a dead laptop cause i sslipped and made a unfixable boo boo. Especially when your Warranty would cover fixing broken parts thus they would do that for you.
Well Apples thing is quality control, they want every single b roken computer to come back to be tested and re-tested to fix a problem if it exists. I honestly beleive them because when I was a campus rep I saw their repair facility myself, they put those repairs through a shit load of tests
That being said the iBook logic board problem has been a kick in the ass for them, because all their tests say it should be OK, but they are still comming back even with redesigned motherboards.
I came over one day with her in a panic because she was working on her G3 (that I had overclocked, rebuilt, added USB2, ATA-133 the works and given to her because I had a iBook now and her compaq was dying a slow death) and accidentally spilled her ENTIRE CAN OF COKE into the B/W case.
What I learned.
Even two years later, you will find someplace where soda will hide in the case as I found last weekend putting a new PCI card in.
Coke that dries up has a very wierd sticky texture that can be molded.
Apple motherboards are suprisingly resiliant to coke
The motherboard actually DOESNT kernal panic now like it used to because I had a 400mhz G4 prossesor overclocked to 600mhz. Dont ask me why, I DONT KNOW. The only Kernal Panic I have had was one with the shitty D-Link USB wireless adapters that suck ass and I returned, other than that it runs better than before.
Wierd but true (she btw did what your did too a year later, I have gone through 4 keyboards because of her)
BTW I dont advocate dumping coke into your computer to control overclock heat
No offence but I know of many PCs where people have blown things and they cost a lot more than 60 bucks, I ALSO know of MANY mac parts that are sub 60.
The worst you can do in a desktop PC is NOT pop a sub 60 component. I have seen people blow 1000 dollar computers into the grave... infact I remeber a great TechTV Screensavers episode where they where building another version of the ultimate gaming machine and destroyed TWO 500 dollar prossesors in the construction.
um not sure about this one... Since it is documented in Apples own repair documents and a lot of magazines have shown you how to get the second DIMM in there without a peep I have a feeling the "shut down website" is all bull, or if it did happen, there is much more to the story.
We ARE talking about a laptop here. I dont know of ONE state that allows you to open up the case of a laptop when the contracts you agreed to buying it all say you cant (yep even though you didnt sign it, that warrente contract is something you agreed to by law, in your purchase of the item.
Let me make it a little more clear. The truth is, THERE IS NOT ONE PART ON MOST LAPTOP MOTHERBOARDS YOU THE USER COULD FIX ANYWAY! You need special gear, and even there I would rather work on a desktop system then poke and prod in a laptop given how tight everything is put together and how hard it is to put things back together unless you do this on a regular basis.
And before you ask, Yes I have been inside of a iBook, and even taking care and actually making foam board models for each layer of screws to make sure I got everything back together, I had a lot of trouble doing it and making it all fit. ITs honestly NOT a easy thign to do, they will nine times out of ten KNOW you where messing around in there and given the AppleCare service isnt much more expensive and they will replace everything for you for 3 years, INCULDING your LCD I would rather some guy in Tenn fix my computer than me potentially break it.
figures you make a excelent point to a dumb shits comment and your not modded up!
your exactly right, the PS 2 has reached its end all, the PSX and PS3 are around the corner and of course everyone is going to start buying the systems they havent got. THATS why I have a gamecube now, I have had a PS 2 since the day they came out, WHY would I want to buy another one???
I hate when people miss the point entirely and assume something is gaining ground cause its good, NOT because there are other reasons (price drop, want to have systems with games they cant get on the PS 2) The only reason I got a gamecube is cause I wanted to play some of the fun Nintendo games, not cause its better or anything, I wanted to play mario party and Animal Crossing!
Honestly I still dont think the Xbox is a good buy cause all they have are PC games that arnt even first run PC games in some cases. Halo honestly blew, I wasnt any more impressed than I was with any of the sequals to Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein, or Unreal. FPS have reached their point and I cna only play so many oriiginal ones. I LOVED Undying even though it wasnt graphically cool simply cause the story kicked ass over running around and blasting the shit out of skript kiddies in a level.
The true test is to look a the actual numbers, if the GameCube has ALSO gone up in sales, and the PS 2 down, then THATs your answer right there, oversaturation.
ahhh but see its not the color of the chips and board, the sexyness is the attention to fine detail and layout that a Mac has over a PC.
Sure for the most part old macs did not have entirely interchangable parts between systems, but it was sexy to open up your mac and see that the motherboard was made JUST for your computer and not some generic ATX board which 99% of the PC's have out there give or take a little.
Open up a Dell box, even if you never have seen a dell in your life, you know from ATX layouts where ever single peice is in general relation to each other.
NOW open a iMac, either tray or slot load. Sure some would say its a strike against them cause it makes it harder to figure out (I dont see it, I have no problem figuring out where things are and without a manual) But for me its sexy to see someone designed the placement of every single piece on that board so it would fit. For a long time it hasnt been the same since the G3 to Mirror Drive G4 have all had pretty standard ATX designs, but the G5 is like this too now.
OHHHHHHHHHH. that explains everything. Wasnt there going to be a rule that nothing from the NY post was to be considered news on slashdot anymore? It's nothing more than a fucking tabloid
actually it makes a lot of sense... here we are doing the right thing and the RIAA wants to fuck us royaly in the ass cause they have a foothold for once, even if it was Apple who managed to get them that foothold and the fat slobs couldnt do it themselves.
before I honestly was against stealing music period. I never had napster, I still dont use Limewire. Hell I dont even really borrow peoples CD's. But after this, if it comes to be true (and Im honestly holding it as a rumor) I am borrowing peoples CD's, going on Limewire, emailing my state reps and doing everything possible to fuck major music. They didnt have much support from me to begin with, but now they made a enemy out of me and I hope some schmuck from the RIAA who lurks in these fourms see this and lets their masters know that I wont be the only one to give up on the RIAA completely
Indies on the other hand will get my full support. I have bought more indie music off of iTunes than I ever have before anyway. I wont stop buying, and maybe I will look even more into other indie bands not on iTunes.
The RIAA right now is looking EXACTLY where managers and other people I work with look and get themselves into trouble doing. They are looking at the small picture and DONT look 5, 10, even 15 or 20 years down the line. They are looking for more money right now, instead of the build yourself a base and let that user base support you, maybe not with all the money in the world, but in the long run your going to make more money than diving for it head first and alienating your userbase will give you.
bull, Jobs has said himself in numerous places including just last week singles will NEVER go over.99 cents. Knowing the NYT's their souce was probably some rumor site
i found it out half way through, this was my first time installing anything windows in 5 years and honestly I dont know why Microsoft cant copy Apple in making it's updater easy to use. They have copied everything else!
Actually I think it would mean a lot in the long run. The one benifit OS X and Linux has over Windows is that so little of the code affects vital functions, that even when you do exploit it there is not much you can do afterward. Also it is just so damn hard to hack both without having some inside knowlage of the machine, the user, or in some cases actual real world accessibility to the machine to be hacked
The reason so many viruses exist for XP deals more with the fact that XP still uses code that was vulnerable in 98 in some spots and that its just too damn easy to exploit. Make something hard and only diehard skriptkiddies will take the time to hack it, right now any jack or jane punk 11 year old can pretend to be a "hacker" and send out a virus, usually varients of the same virus.
But truth be told I quiet enjoy your idea of a more mixed OS base. The problem is programmers HATE it which is why you have more code written for Microsoft and less for Linux or OS X
which is why I love OSX, I was SO annoyed at restarting 6 times patching up XP for my girlfriends father, With Apple, its everything that needs updating is downloaded and installed at once, including "service pack" updates
When they force you to only download a Win Media 9 update and restart without being able to download and install anything else, you know there is something wrong.
no your right, this WILL be interesting to see, Even the iTunes music store contest involved a no purchase necessary clause, so odds are they will have to too.
and you see, my edge was in my packet with my wallet for at least a year before I stopped using it as a PDA and started just leaving it next to my bed and never cracked a screen or had electronic issues.
your the fucking tool troll, Apple locks down their system by default, you have to turn services ON to be insecure, and they build a much more robust Firewall INTO the OS. Microsoft is so riddled with holes a truck could drive through it even on lockdown, which is why no one who needs security and knows what the fuck they are doing uses Windows (go ask the FBI what they use, you will be shocked to learn its OS X NOT Windows for that exact reason)
as for charging money for updates, they only charge for MAJOR OS updates (like going from 98 to Me to XP which microsoft charges for as well.) Security and enhancement updates are free and frequent, the minute something becomes known they release a patch. Far cry from Microsoft who make a OS that will need a 4ghz prossesor to run according to inter microsoft memos and who take their sweet ass time to release it when Apple can code BETTER software and add new features in a year. Panther is almost a totally new OS from Jagure, as Jag was from X.1 Heck XP still has 1 service pack and Panther has had three in a year and Jag and X.1 even more.
Go back to your Unreal game kid and let the grownups talk
Its thin, light, has a decent battery (I can usually go 2 weeks of 1-2 hour reading at night with the backlight) and its cheap cause they stopped making it.
I have already read 12 books on it, honestly if its a good title (or dirt cheap) I buy the book, but for my normal everyday bookreading, I use my visor.
With my cellphone taking over for my PDA, my visor has taken on a new life as a ebook reader/notepad for class.
and now that its free and works in OSX you can play it along side Unreal 2004
Likewise I dont know why you would want to do that, the risk of frying the board far outweighs any benifit you might get from soldering. AND yes I have a girlfriend
maybe so, but they have already twice under two different administrations (clinton and regan) forced the cable companies to adhear to this policy.

just because SOME worms where not from old Win 95/98 code doesnt mean that a lot of vulnerabilities dont exist because of the code.
"MAN we aint found SHIT!"

no where do you get taxed 50%, people making over 150,000 get taxed 43% in federal income but that doesnt apply here.

The stupid one is the one who hasnt noticed the mess Windows users make every time someone gets a virus.
