Shut your hole, pimp. What, do I look like some kinda vending machine to you? You think you just put a quarter in my mouth and I shit out crack rocks for you? Is that it? HUH? I'm talking to YOU, dickhead. Who gave you the money to start up in this town? You think it just fell out of the motherfucking SKY? You keep up this uppity shit, and your tab is gone, and you can fucking forget about that interest rate decrease I promised you.
You want the rock you're gonna have to EARN it. Now, I know this guy, owes me a lot of money. You want rock, you go "remind" him who his friends are, 'cause it gets REAL lonely at the bottom of the river, and we all want to be friends here, right? That's what I thought. Nice and easy.
what's this "growing up" thing? oh, and about the motels, all new inchfan candidates have to turn a few while they're not being screened. Just remember, you might be the pimp around here, but I'M the pusher, and if you want the crack to stay under $3 (and don't be telling me it's just for the mods, Smokey) then you best know your place. Unless you don't value your kneecaps.
Because the inchfan is so L337 that we have to screen candidates. It's a long and grueling application process, and I'm not quite sure that you could hack it. We're talking a half dozen phone interviews, of about 45 minutes each, 4 days personal interview (though we do put you up in a local hourly motel when we're through with you), complete reference check going back to third grade, require a sizeable tithe bi-monthly. IF you pass the first round, then there are further trials you must pass, but I can't let you know what they are until you past the first day.
DoubleClick is evil, yeah, okay. But they have an opt out. Do any other ad services who use this method (read: CNet) have an opt out? If not, then why would CNet being able to sue DoubleClick be a good thing? Wouldn't we want DoubleClick, who we KNOW we can opt out of the invasive behaviour, to be in control, if someone has to be? Thoughts?
good to hear. Though the suit thing would drive me nuts after about three days. Dressing nice is fun, but when you HAVE to wear anything it becomes a uniform, and I'm far too subversive for that;-) Hope it goes well for you though!
you can say any nasty things about me you want to. I don't care. Libel doesn't exist if nobody has their head shoved up their ass far enough to sue. Yeah, language can be hurtful, but only at the moment you start taking yourself too seriously. So what's at fault here?
agreed. this is likely my favorite anime, right up there with Record of Loduss War and Nausicca (but I like the book for that one better). Venus Wars was dumb fun too.
grind up some penguin mints, and dump them in a bottle of jolt. and while that is chock full of caffeine, there's no way to insult RMS by not calling it "Free Soda".
this is a very valid point. some of the best hackers I've known have had shady pasts. And quite frankly, half of any systems work is spent making sure the younger versions of yourself don't try to poke into your system. But I think, like anything else, the major distinction is people not growing up. To wit: you reach a point where you either start doing productive things with all the knowledge and talent you've received, or you become a script kiddie for life.
Piracy isn't necessarily a bad word, though I have less problems with the software/music pirates than I do with the RIAA. I think one grows out of the other. And the REAL software pirates are those that sell their copies. That I DO have a problem with.
I release my own cds. I have my own label. My distribution blows, and I could hardly consider myself a MINOR label. For all intents and purposes, I am unsigned. Yet (and mostly for copyright reasons) all my.mp3s mention a label in the headers (or they should anyway). So am I unsigned? Technically, no. Am I smaller than metallica? Of course. Does Lars give a fuck about anything other than his ego? evidentally not.
But hey, it's ZDNet, so what do you want? I'll also state my opinion right off that Linus, and Larry are great programmers, not gods. Anyhoo:
Indeed, those lost sales... And where are the stats on that? the record industry was UP last year. I'd like to see a comparison of downloaded songs versus an individual artist's sales. How many metallica songs were downloaded compared to how many albums were bought? and how do the sales trends measure up against the last 5-10 years?
specifically, music that might otherwise cost $15 a pop If this were still the case, then it wouldn't be an issue. But mainstream music costs $18-20 per cd these days. Less used, but the band doesn't make any money there either. You'd be best off trying to sue all the used music stores (which I'm afraid isn't far off).
what I DON'T see happening is anyone proposing a solution. How do I hear new music if I can't grab the.mp3s? Radio stations aren't going to play it (particularly if it's not a single), and it's not going to be on MTV. The INDUSTRY doesn't care if you like it or not, so long as you buy it. However, I don't want to buy if I'm not going to like it.
I'd wondered what had happened to you. You got a life!!! Wow!!! Now, come back to the dark side;-)
Anyhoo, as a troll-by-association (I'm TBA! Wheee!!!), I'll agree that the Knots guy was boring (though I like Don Knots himself), and the grits/first post/"lookat meeee! ima troooolll!!!" is lame. You were better at actual trolling than I'll ever be (thus I don't try and stick with my wacky fun surrealism thingie!) So while it's good to have a life, and be busy, I KNOW you're going to get bored eventually . . . just make sure you post the URLS:-)
Stands for Quality Paperback. Usually go for between $13-18 each. Larger than the standard paperback, still massmarket. Better binding, and usually better covers (usually not glossy). Better paper (not so pulp-y). Kinda silly compared to a $6 paperback, but it is a higher quality book, and usually you get more "literary" fiction (which I happen to be into).
Not having seen the book, I can't say if that's the deal, but given the price, that would be my guess. Hit the local bookstore and ask.
as I said, different agendas. The problem I see is not necessarily with the unavailablity of the source per se (I'm not an open source zealot, but I do like it in many cases). The problem is the way that the DVD-CCA is handling things. Ditto the MPAA. Until they start to care more about the parties they represent rather than the governing body itself, then I'd prefer to see no industry.
Kinda like the music industry. Major labels screw bands big time. As an artist, I don't like that, and refuse to buy major label cds unless I can buy them from the band directly, where they get to see more of the money (which they do).
You're right though; it's difficult to come up with an "overall perfect example" because we're all looking at these issues with different perspectives.
but c'mon people - how many bone-headed moves do you have to make?
Exactly one. You know, this community seems a little lax on actual integrity for being so chock full of zealots. That's fine if you don't really follow the party line; respectable even, but I see so many people who don't practice what they preach. I suppose that's fair, as that there are so many different agendas here (I like free software, but I'm not of the RMS be-all-end-all persuasion).
But what really gets me is how short most people's attention span is. DVD's are evil! Lucasfilm is evil because they won't release Star Wars on DVD! Double fricking standards here. Half the people I know who bought DeCSS t-shirts also went out and bought new DVDs the same day. Now, I can't be the only person here who honestly believes in some of this crap. I know there's more out there.
My point? Real Networks fucked up a LONG time ago. I haven't touched one of their products since, and I don't plan on it. So they're at it again, I'm not surprised in the least. Yeah, they "fixed" the problem the first time around, but the whole point of a general boycott is to protect the people who are too stupid to protect themselves. If they start making this known from the get-go, (ie, the first thing you see during the install, and you can opt out) then the problem will be gone. There shouldn't be any need for ANOTHER boycott of Real . . . anyone who felt strongly about it the first time should STILL be boycotting.
Let's not critize them for not being 'opensourse' per se (or 'free software'). Yeah, they're not there, but it's a start. And you can learn from the code to see how some of today's more innovative games are being made. Furthermore, if you DO want to use the code, isn't poking around and seeing if you CAN do something with the code a little more cost effective than blindly licensing an engine (Unreal, Q2, Lithtech, whatever)? I think this is a good step, and I like paying for games. If someone decides they can use it to make something worthwhile, then I'll pay for that too.
That said, let's see what happens before jumping to conclusions, k?
Amongst the trolls, it seems customary to accuse moderators of smoking $3 crack. So for each enum we use we have to have another set of enums for quality, unless you want to link it all in one nasty string. easier just doing it as another dimension in an array.

Well, as that declaring the JonKatz variable initiates the flamewar() function, it could be a good test for seriousness. If the programmer takes things too seriously, then the use of JonKatz would start the flamewar. If the programmer couldn't give two wet flips, then the flamewar never happens and the original program gets finished without the need to call Trolls. All you'd have to do is a boolian test on the JonKatz SucKzzz variable and you're there:-)

Rule one: No one talks about the Inchfan.

not to mention that whoever it is uses my favorite band's name as an id. they get SOOO many points there alone.
