  1. I bought it last year... on Western Digital Service Restricts Use of Network Drives · · Score: 1

    ...and it sucked. Therefore, all these comments are moot, because it was absolutely the worst hard drive or SAN solution I've ever purchased by far. The drive access speed, despite being on a simple gigE network was atrocious, less than 300k (computer-to-computer speeds on this network often go near 40x that speed). The MioNET software itself seems to be compatible only with M$ Windows, and the shares management interface sucked. Also, although this particular issue never happened to me, I've read stories about people permanently bricking the thing - if you hack its filesystem too much, there's (supposedly) no way to recover your data from the thing. Yikes. Back to CostCo...

    OK, fine, last post: if you really want me to stop replying, then please stop replying too. Jim, you did throw me under a bus. There is no question about that. But if you're having problems with me, I want to hear them, I don't want you to say "hey you're just kicking ass" - and then not mean it in the slightest. I took time off - so did you! - and didn't take any more time off than you did! Anyway, next time I get meningitis (and continue to work throughout) - I'll remember what you said, be a man of my word, and continue to write functions in a way I don't like because it's a requirement to get the project launched. And please don't get into pitting my integrity - and doing what I said I'd do - against you - I WILL come out ahead, and can provide the examples, myself, by the dozens. It's not that I didn't appreciate the work we did together, but man - those were some weird projects. Anyway, I suggest we end this. If there's another forum you want to continue this on, for some reason, PM my account on Slashdot, otherwise, please don't respond to this if you don't want it responded to publicly.

    Fine with me, James Manico, but hopefully next time you hire someone to abuse, make sure that you (1) let them know what isn't working for you and (2) understand it when they think you're a creep for that same type of treatment. It's obvious we're never going to agree on what happened, you have your points and I have mine, but in my eyes I lost every iota I had of respect for you as a friend and professional from that project, and I did NOT appreciate your throwing me under the bus to make yourself look good, whatever your superficial reasoning tells you. I will never reply to a comment you make on this system again, not to you directly, nor am I interested in doing so now that I see where you're coming from. I'll pay you the respect I know you don't deserve and ignore you around town, that is the maximum courtesy I can offer, but don't expect me to like you.

Not to mention completely failing to communicate your issues, just disappearing off the face of the Earth for 3 weeks, and then never saying "you're fired" on top of it, Jim Manico, I hardly think you - or your company, for that matter - has a leg to stand on when talking about so-called "business integrity". If you had any of these problems before, you should have said something back in 2006 instead of mentioning them now three months later. Fucking lame! Business integrity, my ass.

Microsoft has done a great job of marketing "Windows Mobile" as if it were really just a scaled down "mobile OS" version of Windows XP, through its interface skin and marketing materials (although any reasonable person like Mac user little ole me won't like it). The need for a robust OS that is user-friendly enough to be used on phones and other devices is so overdue that people like myself are practically ready to write it themselves.

    Of course, this doesn't make me a fan of cell phone companies, I think they're the worst when it comes to thinking of users' needs. Now if Linux Mobile were just a little bit farther along, we'd be all set...

    A simple but awesome observation snowwrestler, this conversation has ceased being about Steve Jobs and his technical ability and become how people feel about successful people and how they got where they are today. Success is about having the willpower to do what you really know you need to do in order to make something, no matter what your part is in it, be it technical or being a great bullsh*tter or a genius marketing manager. Jobs' comment may have been motivated by something else other than technical merit or linguistic advantages. I do not know how great .net or Objective-C are, but I'm of the opinion that the apps created with Objective C tend to be a hell of a lot better than the stuff that's created using Microsoft tools, in general.

  19. Just did the same thing! on How to Leave a Job on Good Terms? · · Score: 1

    Aloha Timothy;

    I just had to do the same thing, although my experience was bit more pleasant. I do understand the former, nasty boss syndrome. The only hold they have over you is withholding payment and damage to your reputation. It sounds like you're no longer too concerned about clients believing your boss, and withholding payment in this case isn't right or legal. Someone up the list suggested contacting your boss' boss. It will help if your boss does have one. Otherwise, you'll need to request a private meeting with him/her, and in it you need to not back down, first asking what their reasoning is in thinking that they need to threaten you with withholding payment, and second that you will not back down and it's illegal, only if the conversation comes to that. As a last resort - and this is painful and can be difficult, I know - you may have to cut your losses short, and risk leaving without being paid. Obviously having a new job that's much better will more than make up for it eventually, but you may suffer difficulty not being able to pay the bills for several critical weeks, if not a month! Whew! I understand what you're going through!

    I am quite sure that if you decide to be tough, fair and determined not to be screwed into the ground by this, you will come out a better, stronger, and most importantly paid individual.

    Good luck and keep us informed of what happens!

    As human beings we have the right to anonymity as a basic human privelege. We should not abuse that right to harm others, nor should we be denied the right to not be public if we wish. The RIAA and similar organizations seek to eliminate that right in a certain venue in an attempt to control more resources utterly, i.e., the musical recordings of the artists who they supposedly, fully "represent".

    Does anyone remember what happened to anon.penet.fi? And now hotmail.com and the equivalent msn are owned by microsoft and extremely popular years later, after the first popular anonymous e-mail service (Penet) was shut down for allegedly committing a crime through offering anonymous e-mail.
