Personally, I moved from piracy to a premium Spotify subscription. Don't get me wrong, I've bought a lot of CDs and a lot of LPs, in fact here's my collection on Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/user/H... (I'm only ~halfway through scanning my CDs, and I haven't started on the LPs yet).

But I pirated a hell of a lot more than I bought legitimately. At one point, I just reasoned with myself "am I really so fucking cheap, that $10 is enough to make me keep downloading illegally?"

Once a good enough legal option comes along, you can at least win over the "casual pirates", and people like me who could never keep up with all the music they like, in a legal way.

Yeah, it certainly couldn't be due to language/accent barriers, or low qualifications, or bad vibes from the interview process... no, no, no, they're all racists, sexists, and bigots who want to keep the minorities down. Sounds quite a bit like a crazy conspiracy theory, doesn't it?

I am talking about people where those barriers do not exist, people who are second or even third generation citizens, people with the relevant education (achieved in this country!), with a good work ethic.

The statistic don't lie. You are more likely to be turned down if your name is "ethnic sounding" and you're not white.

  4. We're banging against the physical limits of silicon, which is why Intel and other companies are trying to find a replacement that will allow finer litography.

When that happens, we will see further increases in system power, instead of the relative plateuing we've been seeing for a couple of years.

I recently bought a 5 year old Thinkpad T420 through a refurb dealer. It has a second-gen 2.5GHz i5 and keeps up just fine with anything I can throw at it, short of 3D games (mostly due to the Intel integrated graphics). It doesn't feel meaningfully slower than my current work PC, which is several generations newer in every way. And once I upgrade it to 16GB RAM and an SSD, it'll be on par with the average laptop sold today.

It's not rightist and centrists who keep bringing traits like race, gender, sexual preference, and so on into every situation and discussion. They aren't constantly pushing identity politics. It's the leftists who are doing that.

That's only because the rightwingers and other assorted bigots are perfectly OK with the status quo, where brown people, non-straight people, women and people with middle-eastern sounding names are routinely rejected for jobs at much higher rates than straight white males.

Reading Larry's blog post about this gives me visions of a high-functioning autist or even sociopath who doesn't understand why everyone just doesn't agree with him, god damnit, but if he just writes enough about it, he'll sway people to his point of view. And of course, he has never ever been wrong about anything. Ever. At least not in his own mind.

I've been there myself, I've had friends with the same tendencies, it's rather disturbing.

I've done some of the most productive and enjoyable work in my life alongside people with whom I do not share a lot of viewpoints, but it doesn't matter. We were there to do a job, and we worked well together and produced great results, despite our personal differences. Maybe even because of them. And yes, we had some spirited discussions over lunch, but when it was time to work, we worked together.

The best possibility is to find a version of Linux that does what you want it to, install it, then keep it far away from any and all internet connections.
