That's easy for you to say after the fact. And velcro+tang aren't the best examples, they're quite simply concepts.

But look at the 2016 list of spinoffs: https://spinoff.nasa.gov/Spino...

Lots of stuff on there that would have been deemed unnecessary or a waste of money by private investors.

Calling the moon landing and the space program in general a "pointless political exercise" is pretty ridiculous, when you consider the massive amount of spinoff technologies that we take for granted every single day of our lives.

I appreciate the sentiment, but 120 million euro is way, waaaaay too little for a project of that scale.

Personally, I have the option of a 500Mbit line, but I have friends who live just a few kilometers away, who are stuck with ~10Mbit DSL or less. Based on my experience in the ISP/telco world, you can multiply that amount of money by ten, and maybe that'll be enough. For one country.

  7. can you list some of these so called useful things an android phone can do by permanently knowing were a device is ?

Traffic information, recommendations for nearby restaurants or venues, generally everything where using location data can be useful, especially aggregated location data, from which you can gather patterns.

And on a more specific level, the ISP/telco I use has a version of NetPerform, which helps gather data about the quality of the network, to show where coverage should be improved.

Of course, everything you can do with always-on location data is in the "nice to have" rather than "need to have" category, I have no argument against that. But it does enable some rather convenient features.

  12. Publish the phone numbers of all employees? Yeah, I'm sure that'll be a great idea. Dumbass.

  13. If you hadn't already guessed that, you're probably clinically retarded.

  14. And if I did actually want to do something illegal and questionable, the first thing I would leave at home would be my smartphone. I'd bring a burner dumbphone paid for in cash instead.

My reasoning is that if I put a lot of normal-looking data into the system, it's way more unlikely they'll notice a small gap here and there when I leave the smartphone and other tracked devices at home.

    This is really basic stuff.

  15. I feel the same way. I'm a boring and very normal person, I don't do much of anything that would raise any eyebrows. Thus, my reasoning is that if they get a lot of data from me, other people's possibly interesting data could perhaps get lost in the noise. Which is a good thing for everyone :-)

  16. bleating about the "invasion" of privacy (honestly, it's 2016, it's not an invasion anymore)

If the invasion is over, is it now an occupation?

Yeah, it is. But it's a relatively benign and sometimes benevolent occupation, which gives a lot of really convenient features in return.

  17. Yeah, I was a bit unnerved by Google Now's suggestions at first, but it's actually super handy at times.

It's still a little bit unnerving how quickly it learns your habits, though.

  18. My approach is to leave stuff like tracking, usage reporting and so on all enabled. My patterns and habits are quite boring, and my reasoning is that by giving them tons of useless data, perhaps they'll miss someone else's possibly-interesting data.

But for the rest of us, waiting for the x.1 version is usually a much better choice. That's why I switched from Arch Linux to Mint, I don't need to be on the bleeding edge, I just need to stuff to work correctly, and I don't care if I'm using a slightly older version.

  22. Didn't you get the memo? Only little people pay taxes.

I think a lot of people didn't get the memo. From 1980 to 2013, the share of total income tax revenue paid by the top 5% of earners increased from 37% to 59%, while the share paid by the bottom 50% decreased from 7% to under 3%. More details here.
