You havn't used windows NT on many different systems, have you? I deal with windows NT every day. Bad video drivers exist there just as often as on linux, if not MORE often. At least with linux you have a hope of recovery if the video fails tho:). Yes, there are points where NT has advantages. THis is not one of them.
Sarcasm starts here didn't you know that office is one, integrated, package - you can't just rent word, you have to rent office, wether you use excel, access, IE, outlook, or whatever. Sarcasm ends here
the GPL is good. when i release code, i use the GPL.
but is the GPL the reason for linux's success? no.
linux's success has a LOT to do, imho, with linus himself. he is an EXCELLENT manager, and that is VERY rare in a coder. I believe this to be the major reason for it's success right now.
short answer: marketing, yes. long answer: It was the result of many market surveys which found that people wanted cute buzzletters as well as buzzwords. And, as the masses are, as we all know, asses, it has indeed worked, and apple have sold a shitload of iMacs:)
Can someone tell me what the psion sound device is like, and if it's a beeper as i suspect;), if it's possible to add some sort of sound device to it? I've no desire for color, but i'd really like to be able to compose on the run:-)
...what HMD's are here and now, and for what price? (and for those who tell me that I don't want things that big, I'm typing this on a 30" TV set atm. sure, the definition kinda sucks, but i love LARGE:P)
it isn't theoretically feasable due to the GPL I disagree. As RMS himself will tell you, the OS is more than just the kernel. It would be quite possible to end up in the situation where apps that rely on certain proprietry libaries (and i'm not talking QT-type psuedo-free, i'm talking real shit propriety MS style stuff). Case in point: I run internet explorer when I am in windows. why? it is NOT because I like internet explorer, it is because so many windows apps require it's libaries. A similar situation COULD occour in the linux world. Yes, I know that IE has OS integration/monolpoly leverage et al, but nonetheless I still think it fits the point well. Perhaps even a few years ago this could have been motif, however fortunantly that kind of died due to it's high price. However, if it had been gratis (as opposed to libre), there is a good chance there would be many apps that require it today.
It'd help if metroworks had a demo version.

Wouldn't be the one mentioned yesterday on slashdot, would it?:-). I think it's good that IBM are still willing to invest money in such projects after they've released the source, rather than just throwing out old products and saying "here's a worm for you, little fishy":P. Of course, this particular piece of software is very drool-worthy, imho:)
Anyway, I was under impression that AMD was supposed to, for the first time ever, beat the equivalent Intel offering in FPU performance -- with some super-duper optimized triple-pipelined FPU unit, with special optimization for single-precision FP arithmetic I distinclty (yes, I know that isn't spelled right!:) remember hearing the same thing about the K6, and the K6-2. Am I the only one who got a good laugh out of slackware doing exactly the opposite to other dists, by making libc5 primary and glibc2 for 'compatbility', rather than the other way around like everyone else? Typically slackware:) (we love you, don't ever change:)
But, what would drive a man to do this? I mean, it is quite clearly insane! But then, what would I know - I keep coding c64's and speccy's:) As an aside tho, what would be even cooler would be taking an MPG of The Phantom Menace (or A New Hope), and running it through a color equvalet AAlib (does aalib have a color mode yet?), and saving that. Of course, you would need sound as well, but hell, even just color ascii (or ansi... bbs's rule:) art would be cool enuf.

It actully kicks ass here :P.
I personally think that any figures this early in the dev cycle would be silly.

much better to wait and compare two release compilers
