    You havn't used windows NT on many different systems, have you?
    I deal with windows NT every day. Bad video drivers exist there just as often as on linux, if not MORE often.
    At least with linux you have a hope of recovery if the video fails tho :).
    Yes, there are points where NT has advantages. THis is not one of them.

    the GPL is good. when i release code, i use the GPL.

    but is the GPL the reason for linux's success? no.

    linux's success has a LOT to do, imho, with
    linus himself. he is an EXCELLENT manager, and that
    is VERY rare in a coder. I believe this to be the
    major reason for it's success right now.

    short answer: marketing, yes.
    long answer: It was the result of many market surveys which found that people wanted cute buzzletters as well as buzzwords. And, as the masses are, as we all know, asses, it has indeed worked, and apple have sold a shitload of iMacs :)

    I disagree. As RMS himself will tell you, the OS is more than just the kernel. It would be quite possible to end up in the situation where apps that rely on certain proprietry libaries (and i'm not talking QT-type psuedo-free, i'm talking real shit propriety MS style stuff).
    Case in point: I run internet explorer when I am in windows. why? it is NOT because I like internet explorer, it is because so many windows apps require it's libaries. A similar situation COULD occour in the linux world. Yes, I know that IE has OS integration/monolpoly leverage et al, but nonetheless I still think it fits the point well.
    Perhaps even a few years ago this could have been motif, however fortunantly that kind of died due to it's high price. However, if it had been gratis (as opposed to libre), there is a good chance there would be many apps that require it today.

    ...is CMYK support. I believe that this is the biggest hurdle in the way of GIMP being adopted as a widespread alternative to photoshop right now.
    (I suppose I could always sit down one day and code it myself, I guess, but really it'd be better for all concerned if it was done by someone who could actully wasn't stupid :)

    ...because, as a .au resident, I know that our politicans (yes, i do know that isn't spelled correctly :) are prone to knee jerk reactions, and eventually that knee is gonna ban something otherwise perfectly legal that I want/need to access.

    Wouldn't be the one mentioned yesterday on slashdot, would it? :-).
    I think it's good that IBM are still willing to invest money in such projects after they've released the source, rather than just throwing out old products and saying "here's a worm for you, little fishy" :P.
    Of course, this particular piece of software is very drool-worthy, imho :)

    Anyway, I was under impression that AMD was supposed to, for the first time ever, beat the equivalent Intel offering in FPU performance -- with some super-duper optimized triple-pipelined FPU unit, with special optimization for single-precision FP arithmetic
    I distinclty (yes, I know that isn't spelled right! :) remember hearing the same thing about the K6, and the K6-2. Now, i'll admit that each time AMD have been getting closer to the mark. But, my point is that my jnudgement is reserved until a real K7 gets here for me to test in real world situations.

    Am I the only one who got a good laugh out of slackware doing exactly the opposite to other dists, by making libc5 primary and glibc2 for 'compatbility', rather than the other way around like everyone else?

    But, what would drive a man to do this? I mean, it is quite clearly insane! But then, what would I know - I keep coding c64's and speccy's :)
    As an aside tho, what would be even cooler would be taking an MPG of The Phantom Menace (or A New Hope), and running it through a color equvalet AAlib (does aalib have a color mode yet?), and saving that. Of course, you would need sound as well, but hell, even just color ascii (or ansi... bbs's rule :) art would be cool enuf.

    ... with such a move is that it relies on people to use it to work. I know this is a stupid statement, but it is what I percieve as a fundamentel truth ;)
    I wonder if peoiple will still say "but 90% isn't GNU" as they do with the GNU/Linux debate (which, btw, I don't take a side on - I don't care.), or just ignore it completely.
