Funny. That is not how MS broke the other monopolies. In no major situation case did they read-write the others format better. They did do the embrace, extend, extinguish, but that was with minor players. The fact that MS is going to give away Windows free for a years, says that they ARE losing their monopoly.
Apple owned 90% of the market.
Netscape owned 90% of their market.
Intuit Quicken owned 90% of their market.
Basically, lots of company can own it. Holding it is hard. If the monopoly with OS-Office gets broken, then MS will likely lose that 90% desktop.
I was looking for a nice low cost Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo. I remember seeing a number of them about 2 years ago. Now, that I want to switch to it, I am not seeing it.
I did not say that Gov is less willing to upgrade. I said that the run from the GreenBox to the home is difficult. That is the one that needs to be upgraded, that is difficult and expensive. On that piece if fiber is put in place (1G would be ideal), then other companies can connect to the greenbox.
I will assume that you live in Colorado. I KNOW how bad qwest is. They SUX big time. USwest was bad, but qwest makes them look great. About the only thing on par with qwest is comcast. But assume that your city or region had a small monopoly that ran fiber to the block or subdivision level. Both Comcast and Qwest would then simple hook to it and compete against each other. It is certain that both would have fibber going to the greenbox by now and both would have dirt cheap internet. We pay 60 from comcast for 6 MB. That is total BS. Qwest wants 100/month for 20. Totally Insane. The state almost opened this up about 4-5 years , but qwest and esp comcast put pressure on all the pubs and got them to block it. Insane again. We need competition.
That current fiber will get SLOW. Not today, but down the road. By the city owning the full thing, they will not want to upgrade. OTH, if they control from some greenbox (either block or even subdivision level), then allow companies to come in with new updated tech from the box back to their service area. That would encourage new tech all the time. The hard part is the house to the Block level box.
They should not set up a single company which brings the service.
Instead, set up a monopoly that does the fiber from a block (or possibly subdivision) green box, AND a separate company to connect these that will have future competition.
If they approach it in that fashion, then new tech can be brought in quickly and cheaply, EXCEPT for the link to the home.
But with a small limited monopoly, it would be possible to do that when new tech requires it. In fact, the could simply make that box-home connection be owned by the city and then do competitive bids on the servicing of such. It limits the monopoly to just the ownership of the lines.
Was the licensing purely a side effect of the commercial C compiler they were using for Minix? Actually, at the time, tanenbaum said it was his work and that he would not OS it. He wanted to charge companies money for it. In addition, he felt that giving away the OS and selling Support would never work. And yeah, it was Amoeba that I was thinking of.
While it is POSSIBLE for OO to get 90% of the market, it can not hold it. The reason is that with it being opensource, others will simply come up with new interefaces, but use the same file format. In fact, I suspect that WP, Ami, and MS Office would all become competitive again.
Actually, you want several different versions on the shelves. The first would sell for 25, but offer just a bit more. I know that I would buy it just to help. The second should be for 50 which would have install support and perhaps more goodies than does the 25 version. Finally, a version for 100, which includes full support, and a lot of extra goodies. That version should install easily into MS, Apple, and Linux.
Move to less control by Oracle, but keep it selling under the Oracle/Sun umbrella. Oracle WANTS to destroy MS's monopoly, the same as most ppl in our industry. After that, we can have innovation again.
Back in early 90, minix was one of our OSs that we used to work from ( colorado state ). We built drivers, network stack, etc. It was a good OS. Problem was the licensing. Had Dr. Tanenbaum changed his license AND not been a prick to an 16 y.o. kid., minix is probably what we would be running.
I have since forgotten the other OS that he had. It was one based on messaging.
I think that you are a lot closer now than you were the other day. Back then you were indicating that Oracle would drop Linux. I give ZERO chance of that. I also think that there is ZERO chance that they will drop Solaris. So as I said before, I think that Oracle will order the sales ppl to start supporting Linux. Sun's current crop HATE Linux and only support as about to lose the sale. In my humble swag, I think that Oracle may favor Linux, but, I think that they will offer up both willingly.
Oracle has been pushing Oracle on Linux for more than several years. They have made it their preferred OS. Oracle's stated goal is not just to own the server, but the desktop space. In server space, Linux is now more prevelant than is Soliar. In addition, it has more in-roads into the desktop than Solaris.
But you think that Oracle bought Sun for its hardware and will now switch to Solaris, and drop Linux? Is that correct?
You HAVE to be kidding. WHO, CDC and other health agencies are stepping up concerns and take appropriate actions against this. As I said, you need to be CONCERNED, but it does no good to be afraid of it. How concerned? Well, if you live in cities where it has popped up, then yes, you may wish to think about working out of home. As I mention, this bug is killing those who are healthy AND in the prime of their lives. Look around at the posters here. Do you really think that they are under 5, or old and decrepit? 98-99% here will be between 15-60. That means that just about EVERYBODY here would be a pretty good target if this bug is in their location.
Just because you have mod points does not mean that you should not think about what you are doing. Hopefully, the meta modders nail you for being a fool.
I get flu shots, they are a cocktail of bits to stimulate your immune system to resist the predicted common viruses of the year. This? It's new. Not covered.
That is absolutely NOT TRUE. Flu is considered an unstable virus. Its outer outer sheath of proteins are different all the time. BUT, this particular strain had to get its input from a number of different strains. It is POSSIBLE that a few of the genes that it picked up were from ones that CDC (and other experts) picked to be the likely strains. IOW, it is POSSIBLE that it has proteins from what was the suspected strains. At this time, it is not known EXACTLY what strains this came from.
What is more interesting, is this one has elements of Avian flu. It is possible that doing a vaccine directly against it MAY be what causes the issues, since it is current suspected that an immune storm is causing the issues.
Well, that is the funny thing. What should be banned is LIVE pigs, avians, and possible humans. I have commented several times in other site that I think that this will be used as a pretext to stop American imports esp. food. The argument will go that even the ship crew can be contaminated. Yet, these same countries will not have cared one BIT when China and Indonesia had 100+ die from PURE AVIAN FLU.
U do not have to be scared. It would not help anyways. But be concerned. Why? This virus is a new one. It has genes from Swine, Human, AND AVIAN. The swine part is NOT that big of a deal. The problem is the human target (ease of spreading between humans) combined with the AVIAN. Right now, the ppl that have died are ALL between 20-40. ALL have been healthy. Only the avian flu has such characteristic. If this spreads amongst nations, things could get "interesting".
Interestingly, it appears to be expressing more of the Avian flu, than the swine. In particular, all the deaths as of yesterday eve where ppl in 20-40 range. ONLY Avian had that characteristic. What has been interesting is the number of posts here in America that say that we should shut down all traffic to Mexico on south. Of course, many of these posts mention illegal aliens. Now, the question is, how many other nations are going to say that they want to shut down all traffic between all nations in the (north|central|south) Americas and themselves?
Actually, WHO and most other nations ARE calling it the Mexican flu. And it makes sense since all evidence says Mexico is ground zero.
Hmmm. Perhaps the Cheney flu? You do not want to be shot with it.
I have my house fully wired with ethernet. Security and speed is the big reasons.
once they feel that they own industry, they will push a new form of IP.

Actually, the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 also had that characteristic.
That flu WAS avian flu.

Yeah, but those of us in Colorado are stilling trying to push the bad ppl out of here. And yet, those damn lawyers WILL NOT LEAVE.
At this time, it is low. OTH, if the current vaccine does not work against it, then we are likely to see that trend change. And most likely this week.
