Here is the map. Look at the bottom right and follow e line. 18 stops. Roughly 20 miles. It takes 40 minutes for what I can drive AND PARK in 20 minutes. That is inefficient.

Now as to drag, the faster that you, the more that aerodynamics figures in. BUT, travelling at an average of 30 mph, like the LRT (20 miles in 40 minutes), means that a lot of time is spent accelerating and decelerating, which it does. As such, lots and lots of energy is wasted because these are several times what those pods will weigh. And as to energy, if you take a 200 ton commuter and start/stop it every mile, i promise you that cars WILL outdo it easily esp. today's EVs.

And as others pointed out, the train is inefficient. It is fine if you are going 500 miles with no stops, but when going under 30 miles and with multiple stops, the train, like LRT, is a horrible choice. OTOH, if you can get in a small pod and travel at 100-200 mph and go from start to destination directly, it is far far more efficient than a train.
This is even more true in a tunnel. With above ground trains, they have to be designed to handle running into semi's and items. With underground pods, these things will be lightweight like an aircraft. Far less energy.

BUT at some point, a lot of traffic will be slowing down their cable. They will then use this as an excuse for why they need to throttle supply side.

What is needed is to get competition going. Remove the monopoly. Likewise, allow Google and others easy access to public ways.
Finally, at a federal level, require that all local govs be allowed to put in communications utilities if the local citizens vote it in. IOW, state gov can not override the local gov choices to have this.

As long as we have gov sponsored monopolies, and esp without proper regulations on performance AND pricing, then we will always be screwed. So, allow competition to take hold and considering the importance of communication between citizens and gov, I would suggest that local gov have a real need to install the fiber, esp last mile, and then allow competition for managing it along with providing services over it.

First off, China has the lowest efficiency of any panels. Only 1 or 2 companies are doing any good, and that is because their r&d is in the west ( America and Europe). Secondly, pollution is a major issue with Chinese panels. They choose to take shortcuts, hence their water/air. Third, automated manufacturing esp of things like solar panel, will be done locally, as opposed halfway across the globe. That is why Tesla will be making GF around the planet.

  11. First off, capitalism is all about being able to shift industries faitly easy. And stranded asset will be bankrupted ( covered by society ), or new profits from elsewhere will cover it. Secondly, we have already been.shifting away from fossil fuel for 10+ years. Coal accounts for 30% of our electricity, and should be somewhere around 20% by 2025. Thirdly, all the drilling equipment for oil will still continue. Why? Because it can also be used for Geothermal as well as oil. So no stranded assets there. Fourthly, oil processing will still be needed since oil/Nat gas are far better used as feed stock for chemical processes. Burning oil, Nat gas has been a major waste. Fithly, the burning of oil will slow down a great deal over the next 10 years. Musk is forcing that issue. Hopefully, trump will put same tariffs on Chinese cars that they put on American cars. 19. Re:Things to quit procrastinating about on Digital IDs Needed To End 'Mob Rule' Online, Says UK's Security Minister (independent.co.uk) · · Score: 1

No. If done right, then you should be able to submit the VETTED cert, which is tied to an ID. However, if you do not want to submit a vetted cert, not a problem. Then those sites will have to decide what to do.
For example, if I am a bank, I will INSIST on vetted certs to do a number of things. Likewise, if arranging for airline tickets, then all passengers must be vetted (after all, you WILL be vetted at the airport, so no sense not). For /., they can take vetted cert, simple login, and AC. BUT, we readers should be allowed to decide if we want vetted only, COMBINED with say level 3 on the rest. This way, if you say something important and are moderated up, then I will see it.

THis is NOT a bad thing. It is actually a nice way to stop the trolling while some sites will still be able to able to provide a sewer.

  20. Actually, the ID DOES make sense. For example, if a site says that you can only be on if you are below age 12 and parents of such, then the vetting will block adults, EXCEPT for those that were tied to a parent . If a pedophile has a stolen ID at some point, they will be caught on those sites and they will be gone after rather quickly. This is much easier to ID them than not.

  21. Just because you have a vetted certificate does NOT mean that a site has to require a cert. For example, the ideal thing for /. is to allow us to say that I will see ALL vetted postings as well as a level 3 on non-vetted postings. Moderaters than have to see all, though they might want to set a level of 0. That means that if you posted something interesting and are moderated up to 3, then you would be seen.

  22. I have been pushing multiple American candidates to do several things:
    1) say that intel world is free to get to data from non-encyrpted data streams/storage. The reason is that it is not much different than sending a postcard to glass mailbox that is without a front. IOW, you seed without any effort.
    2) OTOH, we need to require a warrant on anything that is encrypted.

This will have the effect of causing all the apps and OSs to encrypt everything.

Then we need VETTED certs for everybody, at least in the west. This does not mean that all things must use these certs. However, if send in a vetted cert to /., they could then enable us to say that we will view ONLY vetted certs (which means person is new OR has not been kicked off), OR anonymous at say level 3. That way, moderators can decide which of the unvetted ppl have comments worth while looking at.

The best way to vet this is not at the bank, but at post offices, DMVs, or those that issue gov IDs. Have them either generate a cert pair and give you the private via bluetooth OR they person send the public key to the vetter. Regardless, the public key is then installed on a central DB and marked vetted.

Nice advantage is that if a site boots a vetted person, they can keep them off as being vetted. In addition, others of us do not have to deal with the trolls who never have anything intelligent to say.
