Did Apple port a stripped down OS X for it, or even a Darwin framework?
They tried! Then they threw up their hands and hired an outside company, Pixo, to write the software for them. Otherwise it would have been another Copeland/Pink/Taligent disaster.
I fly a few times a month and I've been noticing more and more folks carrying portable DVD players with them. They're below the $200 price point at my local Target and Costco.
What's interesting is it's not the folks up in First and Business with them (where I'm sitting;-) but it's the huddled masses back in steerage. Typically they're used as electonic pacifiers/babysitters. Anything that can keep a child from screaming/running around on an airplane is a Good Thing (how I miss those days when there was a CURTAIN to keep those coach folks out of sight and out of mind).
Anyway, I you may be on to something. People *do* want to carry movies with them, but it's not the wealthy early-adopters, it's parents trying to keep their kids quiet. I suspect the sub $200 portable DVD players will continue to do well, while sales of portable media players won't.
Apples codec is far superior to WMA...because of it's lossless charachter
Don't even waste you breath arguing! This guy knows this is a lie. He's most likely a paid agent working for Apple Computer to intentionally spread mis-information.
city could reduce costs in other areas such as, say water meter reading
Hey! I read water meters for a living, you insensitive clod!
Seriously, I think that's probably the biggest stumbling block to remote meter reading! All those unionized meter readers who would suddenly be out of work.
Why is it that all the other hard-disk based portable music players (Dell, Sony) beat apple 2x, 3x (the Sony unit really does get 30 hours!) on battery life?
How did Apple, which got nearly everything else right on a small HD music player, blow it so badly on battery life?
With Sirius, you get INCLUDED with your service streaming audio of all their programming to your PC. It's a simple matter to time-shift this music with.wav drivers.
I'll never understand the processor tribalism that has infected some computer users. Just use what's best for the job.
Let me explain it to you!
Apple hires people to go to blogs like/. and post misinformation about their competition. Since Apple can't compete on price/performance, they focus on issues like heat generation and try to make a big deal of it.
It seems that Apple's now copying Sony, Dell and IBM. (And the Sony comes with a remote control, wireless 2-button mouse (that's 100% more buttons!) and a television tuner.
Hi! My name is Corey! I love myself. I'm a big geek and take lots of photos and have a big movie collection. And I like girls! I spend all my time on the Internet chatting about stuff
I spend lots of money on electronic things. And because I'm so important and special I got a Portable Media Center! It's way cool! It's not an iPod! It's something different
I have such a large movie collection, I'll wear once of these out a week! I have lots of on-line friends who love to read my blog. I live in my parents basement
Even though I just said I'm an ultra high-tech geek, I serve this web site on a slow DSL connection from my l33t Linux box. Please use a mirror!
...will Apple's G5 every catch up with the tricks Intel and AMD have up their sleeves? Just when Apple got to be nearly as fast as Intel and a little behind AMD, this will leave them out in the cold.
Who cares? This is/.! Nobody reads the article, and I got modded up instantly! All it takes is a few lines of text with a few links in it. Why bother doing any more?
Remember when Applebought a Cray? It was mostly for show, so their R&D group can have the blinkenlights.
However it spawned a popular story about how "Cray designs on Apple and Apple designs on Cray" (see link.)
And now for the REST of the story:
Did you know that Macintoshes are designed on PCs!? That's right--PCs running WINDOWS. You see, nobody makes software to burn eproms or design printed circuit boards that runs on MacOS, so the hardware group has a bunch of Windows PCs!.
This is an excellent idea. Perhaps the airlines were too hasty in letting laptops in general be plugged in.
I'm writing my letter now! I think it's an FAA issue, and not a TSA issue, but the TSA could be on the look-out for those power adapters if the traveller is using a PowerBook.

(But, even so, I want one!)

All I know is that Mac folks love to skip around saying "Tra-laa-laa Megahurths Myth Laa-dee-daa We're Fathster!
Microsoft has an *optional* itty-bitty Active-X control.
So why are you picking on poor Microsoft? Does Apple pay your salary?
I hope this speeds blu-ray to the market! I'm sick of just watching HD via satellite and OTA.
Hey! I read water meters for a living, you insensitive clod!

How does the Swiss Army defend itselves against Nazis, Commies, and Al Queda with those itty-bitty knives? Do they know something we don't?
How did Apple, which got nearly everything else right on a small HD music player, blow it so badly on battery life?
Any theories?

I got through college without a TV, Stereo, iPod, Computer, DVD collection, etc. (granted this was 25 years ago!) and did just fine.
The city of Alviso is a little known community that borders on Sunnyvale. Some of TiVo's offices are located there.
I hope there are enough Pixo people left at Apple to write the software.
Let me explain it to you!

Cupertino, start your photocopiers!

Mr. "DEREK" got it. Thank you all for playing!
And the FIRST PERSON who gets an email to me (you'll have to figure out how -- look on my home page) will get it.
1. They wouldn't have been 0wn3d so easily
2. It would keep them toasty warm!

If you really want google, wait about 90 days before buying it.
I live a couple of miles from Google HQ, so I'm bracing myself for the 500 new Hummers that the 500 new Google Millionairs will be driving!
Seriously, a big pile of money could prove to be a big distraction for the Google Rank and File. I hope the company stays on track.
