I can't tell you how many linux nuts are uninformed about Windows, telling false me things like you can't centralize administration, it's slow, etc.
EXACTLY!. And by spewing false facts about your competition, you lose credibility. I'm consulting for a Big Media Company now and we always wince when we have to deal with a Linux shop because they always tell us nonsense things about our Windows XP servers. Things that just aren't true.
It's why the Apple "switch" campaign failed (you don't see any more "switch" ads, do you?) You really won't ruin x-mas if you try to plug a digital camera into a PC! It'll work just fine. All those ads did was make Windows users distrust Apple even more...
"There's no set architecture in Linux. All roads lead to madness," and "the devil is in the details. This stuff is not easy to run."
This was my experience, too! I ran Linux in the early days, and stopped because I couldn't get the performance I needed for high-end network tasks.
Then I went to FreeBSD. I was pretty satisfied (there's a standard distribution, and the networking code is a lot better), but there wasn't enough desktop support.
When Windows XP came out, I discovered I could run nearly all of the Unix stuff I used to with cygwin, and that the Windows API had everything I needed. I really like the way Windows Update works (no kidding!); it's much easire than applying patches and recompiling. And, of course, there are tons of applications available.
But what really did it for me was the.NET architecture. Microsoft's C# and.NET, combined with Visual Studio are by far the best programming environment I've ever used.
In the 23 years since I graduated from college with a CS/Math degree, I've programmed in just about everything.(And, yes, I've programmed on NexTStep and Mac OS-X with that cruddy Objective-C and crashy development environment). And NOTHING beats C#/.NET for general application programming.
Pete Goglia should get a job at Google! He could even change his name to Pete Googlia to make it more of a better fit.
Seriously, why was this story reported on a Mac web site? If Mr. Goglia is a Mac programmer, perhaps the real reason he can't get a job is that he only knows a proprietary niche programming language (Objective-C) and a proprietary niche API (Cocoa/Carbon, etc.)
The editors of Slashdot seem to love posting articles whose sole purpose is to evoke flame wars between Intel fans and AMD fans.
You've hit the nail on the head. Why on earth would you make a statement about how "disappointing" it is that Xeon may be better in some ways? Why is it disappointing to have a CHOICE?
It's the same reason why the Windows API still sucks after 20 years
The Windows API has had two MAJOR updates in the past 20 years (from Win16 to Win32 to.NET) and many minor ones.
.NET is a brand new API that has some major innovations, like managed GC access to system resources. I love programming in.NET. In fact, I was a Macintosh OS-X developer until about 18 months ago when I started working with Microsoft's new.NET API and I've never been happier.
This is no joke! I think the "Free Software Movement" is a terrible one for people who want to make a living programming; especially very small companies.
Bascially, little 1-3 person software shops, writing little utilities, are now expected to give their software away for free!
All "Free Software" has done is made a few companies, very very big, and put all the little guys out of business.
Amazon removes reviews all the time! They removed a review that I wrote about a book on Java because I pointed out (in the context of a factual review) that the author had been arrested (and plead guilty on related charges) for crossing state lines to have sex with a 13 year old girl he met on the Internet!
The review was up for a while, and then they dropped it!
I suggest you all go to Amazon and rate all the "one star" reviews helpful, and all the others "not helpful" for Katie.com
Don't tell me that if you had 200,000 shares in your brothers company, and he called you and told you to fucking sell them, that you would ignore his tip and hold your shares.
I certainly would!
First of all, besides the fact that it's not the right thing to do, it's also very easy to get caught! The SEC checks these things carefully. The most important thing a person has is his reputation. I would never want to lose mine. I'm sorry you don't value yours. Perhaps you should see a psychiatrist!
Martha shouldn't be behind bars.
Here we agree. But Martha wasn't charged and convicted of insider trading. She was charged and convicted with making false statements about her own company to shareholders. So I really have No Idea what point you're trying to make!
I am sorry that Katie T had to go through what she did at the [hands] of a 40 year old pedophile
Why? She thought he was 23! And adult is an adult, whether 23 or 40.
He didn't break into her home and rape her, she SKIPPED SCHOOL to go meet what she thought was a 23 year old man!
It seems to me that her only regret is that he wasn't the dream boat she expected! If she met 40 year old Brad Pitt, would she have cried "RAPE"? Of course not.
I don't feel sorry for this little whore! Not one bit! And neither should you. If she MURDERED someone at age 13, she would have been charged as an adult. So if she SLEEPS with someone at age 13, in a premeditated, determined fashion, she's 50% culpable!
When I got my CS degree, there were three semesters of Calculus, Linear Algebra, DiffEQ, Differential Geometry, Prob/Stat, Mathematical Modeling, Discrete Math/Numerical analysis, and complex analysis.
This is impossible, along with CS courses, in two years.
The problem is they should call the program a degree in "Computer Technlogy" and degree holders should be "Computer Technicians."
I may trust them to crimp connectors on my Ethernet cables, but they're not going to be doing any heavy lifting!
I do not want to make any money out of this situation, other than to recover my losses.
She really needs to sue for some ungodly sum ($100 million) for defamation of character (after all, she never flirted with older men on the Internet) and get an injunction against the book. Make them slap stickers on the cover.
Well, *I* always fly business or first class, so I get to PLUG MY LAPTOP IN! I can't help it if your boss doesn't value your comfort!
However, every review of the IBM T-40 and T-42 series laptops confirms the 7+ hour battery life. I routinely get 8 hours on mine.
I hate to tell you this, Mary, but Apple isn't always best in everything. The Dell-Pod, for example, gets 11 hours on a battery. It really does. Of course, it's butt-ugly, but it's a true fact! The battery life is MUCH longer.

Linux isn't even in the running!
Apple OS up until OS-X was a pile of crap. I know because I developed for it.
Now it's too late and the choice is between Windows XP (which is damn good by now) or some Un*x flavor (Linux, FreeBSD, or OS-X).
Seriously, why was this story reported on a Mac web site? If Mr. Goglia is a Mac programmer, perhaps the real reason he can't get a job is that he only knows a proprietary niche programming language (Objective-C) and a proprietary niche API (Cocoa/Carbon, etc.)
They'd rather that the IT dep't decide when its time to do an update than individual users.
You've hit the nail on the head. Why on earth would you make a statement about how "disappointing" it is that Xeon may be better in some ways? Why is it disappointing to have a CHOICE?
If you don't want CPU choices, get a Mac!

Coincidence? I think not!
Here's a reference to a Palm Virus from 4 years ago!
So what do we learn from the fact that the first handheld-worm was releases for Windows CE and not for PalmOS?
We learn that you're some kind of crazy zealot, or perhaps one of the folks Apple hires to spread lies in blog sites!
No! They just take your $$$ and buy beer and hookers!
I certainly would!

If someone chooses to make her sexual life public in a book, then I have a right to call her a "whore."
Funny thing is, /. is one of the worst looking sites under Firefox!
Those girls! Back in my day, only BOYS when near the computers! The GIRLS were in ceramics class.
Why? She thought he was 23! And adult is an adult, whether 23 or 40.

C'mon now! That's a fake name! How about Katie gzipBox or Katie rarball?
Perhaps they shouldn't allow laptops (or at least pluggin in laptops) on commercial airlines!
However, every review of the IBM T-40 and T-42 series laptops confirms the 7+ hour battery life. I routinely get 8 hours on mine.

Well, there was also the matter of the Powerbooks catching on fire, which scared me off of them!
