Yep, I agree. However, as we all know, there will always be a contingent of people to whom nothing they could pirate is worth paying for. I think it's equally obvious that the media empires who have previously monopolized these markets have no interest in increased competition driving down their prices.

Then why is it worth pirating? I think it's obvious that some things are worth less than the asking price. In a more free market, prices would be driven down (or even up in some cases) by competition to appropriate levels for content. We have seen a little of this starting to happen with indie stuff; let's hope it continues to make inroads.

My quibble is that the Constitution is obsolete The Constitution was intended to be amended to stay current with changing times, and it was more diligently updated until recent history. A major issue the US faces, in my opinion, is the willingness to blur the separation of powers. The system can work, it is just being abused currently.

It seems pretty common especially in the last couple decades for companies to create their own equivalent formats (Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD, DVD+R vs. DVD-R, Memory Stick vs. Secure Digital vs. others, and other ridiculous software format wars such as MPEG vs. Windows Media) because the advantage of controlling the standard is so lucrative.

Consumers need to educate themselves more about which standards are truly open and adopt the products that support them, but I fear this will never happen because as consumers they purchase based on other values.

Sorry to get all philosophical here, but it seems to me that the only difference between the knee jerk reactions to crimes at universities and that of the PATRIOT ACT, is the scale of the crime and the number of people affected by the reaction.

We have cameras on the parking lots because we kept having "neighbors" from the black-dominated slums nearby breaking into cars and carjacking people, and so they now have someone watching to dispatch a cop to a problem spot 24/7. We have cameras on buildings leading to classrooms, and even a few IN classrooms, because of people committing rapes and getting into fights. These are not new problems, and society has been dealing with them for centuries. Using that as a justification for creating a surveillance state is not okay with me. This is in the same line of thinking that brought us the PATRIOT ACT.

Open source should not be about "preventing" proprietary software. And it usually isn't about that. Except in the GPL case. Open source should be about creating software and letting others use it in any way they want, no matter what political views they have. That's software 'freedom'. The GPL isn't about "open source" (also called "free as in beer"). It's about Free Software (also called "free as in freedom"). The two have some overlap, but assuredly have different goals.

"Give nothing back" sounds too much like the crazy BBS days when readers were rated on "upload to download ratios". On a separate note, this is going on even today in places like BitTorrent. I suspect it is important to all communities where shared resources are important.
