Additionally, The GPL is a legal guideline, not an ethical guideline. So while the GPL does protect Project A's right to aquire code from Project B, It has nothing to do with the Ethical ramifications of that action.
A large part of Ethics is RESPECT. And doing what is right. And for those who say its still ok. then I ask you; If MegaTechCo. decides to fire 3/4ths of its IT staff the night before christmas, ship those jobs off to Turkinistanbul and give the Higher Ups a $2million Bonus. Is it
A) Legal
or
B) Ethical

I rememeber when me and my other personalities were doing a program for class, and due to internal politics, the code got forked. well long story short, I turned in thier code, and they got mad, and I was like "whatever, whatever I do what I want"
But seriously, code forks, and splits are tricky things. especailly if its not an amicable one. In this situation, even though it is allowed by the Liscense, maybe the best course of actions is to abide by the wishes of the other party. I doubt that this is the first time, that this has happened in open source, and will not be the last. When you have a lot of talented people working on identical projects, in competition, with open doors to whats under the hood, people will look.
thusly it is probably in the best interest of both projects to keep out of each other's kitchens as it were. This provides both the incentive of boosted competition, and also the added benefit of better inovation. becasuse as long as you are copying, your code is not evolving.
So somehow we now believe that omnivore/carnivore/eschelon cannot be somehow modified to snoop into chat rooms, MUDS, MMORPGs, Slashdot Comments, or anything else?
Come on people! If its electronic and not encrypted, then its wide open!.

Wow! I must have been really REALLY high, I've had to update a lot of my knowledge within the past 24 hours. I'd somehow gotten under the impression that Linspire was availible as source and thus could be made free. But after a few minutes of early morning putting around the site... I see no free source or binary downloads... well, knowledge updated.

Cyrix was meant as a joke. Just let it go man let it go. I did RTFA, but I still feel the need to be paranoid and xenophobic, especailly about a HUGE corporation, and its interest in OSS, you hear that IBM, I've got my foil hat ready for you.
I have reservations about walmart doing anything. Though it would be nice to see linux hit the open market in mid-west america in a ready packaged, boot and go format,I have a sneaking suspicion that plenty of these systems will end up with pirated versions of XP or other MS tripe on them.
Still one has to wonder what kind of quality is put into this sub $500 laptop. I mean once OS cost drops near $0 it should become clear that the production (and ultimaty retail) costs go to hardware. This is walmart! so one must ask how much of the $500 is profit margin? 10, 15, 20, 50%?
I for one would be very suspicious of the specs and quality of the parts. Because, lets face it, who needs a system with refurbished harddrives and Brand X ram that go up in smoke after 2 months?... hell, maybe they will run Cyrix.

I am what most people would consider a highly trained technical professional. as I possess most of the qualifications that you claim, and then some (A+, Cisco, and RedHat) I've had my certicifations since 1999, and have since maintainted their currency. I am also a graduating senior in Computer Science. I understand full well that I will be unhireable at the time of my graduation.
I will be the first to say that OSS has some shortcoming (especailly when it comes to UI), But I will also say that I will support OSS until the day that I die. As someone who free-lances computer repair, I know the problems that Windows incurs just through everyday useage. AND I know that the patch and repair cycle on closed source software is too slow. Personally I use linux on all of my systems, including my micro cluster and DEC alpha Workstation. the only exception to this is my palm top which was a gift from my beloved mother.
Now to address your points. Linux is not, I repeat, NOT slower than windows when it comes to serving files, its all in the setup and configuration. If both OSes were tweaked to the hilt, the advantage would go to linux (especially if it is a compiled from source distro). Also there is the small matter of which webserver one uses on linux, there are a plethora and more coming, each inovating and unique, some with more focused on speed and others more focused on security and flare.
Additionally, even if IIS were "faster" and "more efficent per $" when it works, how do you account for the inheirent instabilities in IIS that create more down time... so how much does the down time cost? and where is that factored into your "100% FACTS"?
Cutting corners is where microsoft makes mistakes. If a few extra steps in installation ensures that my bank account numbers is not in the hands of "the terrorists" when the box goes live, then that makes a fair trade off.
And if constant re-installation for linux were an issue, then maybe, the installation time should be something to be factored in. but lets face it, linux boxes RARELY if ever need to be restarted or re-installed.
As for GIMP, I've been using the program for a while, and like most OSS, I had to MAKE myself use it at first... because pirated photoshop was all I was used to. But as I used it more and got a better feel for it... the more I liked it...(If windows had multiple desktops, I'd like it more).
There is also the final question, of how cross platform compatible are closed source alternatives? Not Very! Like Gaim, Gimp, Apache, and many others, I can if nessesary, set up a simular enviroment where ever I happen to find myself. and usually quickly too.
Is this because the source itself is somehow better? Nope, its the people that are better. The dedicated thousands of people who push OSS, write, review, test and compile the code. Doing it not because they had to drag thier asses to work today and fill out TPS reports, but BECAUSE THEY LOVE IT!!!
honestly I'm a writer (among other things), and I like the cross platform compatibility of AbiWord its rather nice you know to be able to go from work (where I use Win & Mac) to home where I use (Gentoo & Mandrake) and have the same feature set and what not. I like AbiWord's rather clean interface and it feels less "Clunkity" than OOo. Also It will run on my old 233mmx laptop, which is the system that I adore and prefer to write on. I think OOo's footprint is too large to run in 32 mb of ram. But Abi does. so Abi it is.
I think this is a great idea, one of hte reasons I had trouble with OOo in KDE3.X was its lack of smoothness. now if only someone will do the same for Abiword

So when 4 of the origianl 8 (yes thats EIGHT!!!) that came with the unit finally gave up the fight, I wandered into radio shack with the OTHER 4 in the unit bobbing my head. Addtionally, I keep 3 sets of fresh batterries around. and even I use the unit itself to charge the old NiHM batteries to use in other things (like my remote control and wireless keyboard thingie)
