Most computer classes are an elective. Here is CA, some schools are offering band or typing. It would be great to offer this as an option. I doubt that this is compulsory for all students. I took a CS class in Junior High and all we did was programming. (Apple IIe) I agree that Java might not be the best language, maybe web programming (php and JS) is more accessible since they do not need to compile and they can all produce their own websites to show their friends.
Why stop at 140,000? There are an infinite number of ways you can get hurt. I think that the most common injuries could be classified within the 18,000 codes. All other injuries should be labeled 'misc'. The additional cost and confusion out weighs the benefit. Once you open the door to classifying EVERY injury, you will get a lot of duplicates because of mistakes and misspellings. Code 999 = Hit by potato gun. Code 1256 = Injured shooting a potatoe gun.
Like them or not, Amazon is a very forward thinking tech company with ambition, experience and a very well paid staff of top-notch Executives. They are up against an understaffed, underpaid group of Government workers. I doubt that they "folded". My guess is that they have a better plan up their sleeve.
Oh, what sad times are these when we have to rely on Hipsters to save our economy. There is a pestilence upon this land. Nothing is sacred. Even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under considerable economic stress at this period in history.
A good place to start might be simple programs for editing text from the GUI. Starting with something like Kjots, gedit, or Kwrite is a good way to see how to build a simple interface and read/write files. Pretty simple and a step up from Hello World!.
This is an interesting idea that should not be too difficult to implement in a Linux Distro. How often do I boot up my laptop just to check email or look up something on google? Having an option to login quickly in a kiosk-mode with only a limited number of apps or full desktop might come in handy. Anyone set something like this up already? Pros - Cons? Probably just have something like TWM as well as my trusty XFCE-4 as an option at login.
I know often times small milestones can make news because of the ramifications for future use, but this seems really early to see much of anything useful out of it. They probably should have held on to the press release until they did a more application-oriented proof of concept.
Mounting up an ISO by double-clicking has not been available on Windows? This has become second nature for me on Linux. I guess I just don't spend enough time with Windows.;-)
I wonder if they intend to incorporate an on-chip compression mechanism. In that case, if I have 2TB of text files or sparse files, it might compress down to 16GB. Doubtful, but in theory it could "scale" to that.
Fair enough. It just seems that although the security companies appear to be at odds with the malware authors, the cat and mouse game is pretty lucrative.
Kevin, do you suspect any collusion on the part of cybersecurity companies such as Kapersky Labs or Avast! and virus creators? If there were not so many exploits in the wild, would there be a billion-dollar anti-virus industry?
I was really impressed with the low IDs. I wonder how far they go down. If yours is lower than mine (pretty easy) reply. Only reply to the child reply if yours is lower. Thanks Rob, I still have the shirt I won at LinuxWorld 05.
Did you mean monolithic kernels? The fact that there are different modules to load IS the problem. The initrd needs to get access to the root filesystem and if the correct controller module is not loaded....no root. Same problem with SAN. If you change HBA cards you may need different modules to load. But most likely the SAN handler will be the same.
The biggest problem with that is trying to migrate to dissimilar hardware. Changes to the storage adapter or disk size (smaller) make for real problems.

Why force the 99% of kids

How about SHart? See if you play around with the capitalization, it doesn't look so bad.
You must be new here.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft has the patent on that. Might cause another lawsuit.

Exactly! What this guys said.

Now I understand why Jack White played a cheap plastic guitar in the White Stripes.

Nah, hipsters would install "Mandrake Linux".

So, in case of an accident we remove the possibility of nuclear radiation poisoning, but now we have the threat of General Zod, Ursa, and Non.
Since they can't backup to tape, maybe they will convert their old tape library to swap out hard drives.

A four digit id appears to be a n00b in this thread. There are two and three digit ones. Looking around for single digits.

With the current pace of technology, those machines will be outdated in a few months .
Imagine the pile of garbage that will create...
