Let me improve that analogy for you. It's like replacing the factory radio with an aftermarket model that makes use of the GPS and Onstar-type hardware for which I already have a lifetime subscription
When I bought my G1, I bought the rights to use the google experience apps. I have the rights to backup and restore those apps. Cyanogen was effectively performing that task for me. The apps he distributed were identical to the ones I could have backed up and restored myself. Indeed, that is how we will have to "work around" Googles C&D.
Disclaimer, I work for Red Hat so I am very familiar with competitors efforts to spread FUD about open source software but I don't believe any nefarious activities were at work here.
The NSS Project is an open source SSL toolkit
that received FIPS140 certification in 2002. Five years ago! The opensource Crypto++ project was certifed in 2003.
So if (as the sensationalist headline proclaims) "the idea of an open source SSL toolkit didn't sit right with proprietary vendors of similar products." They've had 5 years to get over it.
It is based on the Netscape Certificate Server product
(which is in use at the DoD as part of a huge certificate infrastructure) but has numerous additional features including a smartcard/token management system that enables two factor authentication out of the box.
The P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the share price by the earnings PER SHARE number. As such, it is not affected by stock splits.
For a company earning $10 that has 10 shares out standing and a share price of $10 P/E = share price / (earnings / shares outstanding) P/E = $10 / ( $10 / 10 ) = 10 after a 2 for 1 split they will still earn $10 but now they have 20 shares trading at $5 each P/E = $5 / ( $10 / 20 ) = 10
Tada! the same number.
There are reasons not to rely solely on P/E ratios as a company measure but fluctuations due to stock splits is not one of them.

Unless you're trying to draw some pedantic destinction between the "engine" and the "transmition". Why shouldn't the engine know how fast the wheels are spinning. Many modern motorcycles and probably cars get the speed from the engine. I gets screwed up if you change the wheel size but thats always been the case unless you use GPS
And yet, I was not aware that Lime Coke existed. The very fact that they played the commercial over and over directly lead to you mentioning Lime Coke. Which in turn lead to me hearing about Lime Coke and now I want to go out and buy a can.
So it would seem that repeating the ads will indeed result in at least one more sale.
What makes you think Sun is going to release everthing that goes with the Solaris 10 distribution as open source?
During yesterdays product launch Sun's COO Jonathon Schwartz said "We are going to open source ALL of Solaris. We are not going to opensource bits of it and keep other bits private."
That seems like a pretty good reason for believing Sun will opensource it all.
I think that Mikhail Kalashnikov--the designer of the AK-47--really lucked out when he designed that famous assault rifle.
He may well have gotten lucky with the design but whilst listening to a radio show about him the other day, I learnt that apparently the designer of the M16 got paid, something like 10cents for every M16 made and ended up with millions. Mr Kalashnikov got the grateful thanks of his fellow commrades.
wow, just imagine how buggy this player would be if it ran windows!
We don't have to imagine, there already is a windows based media player. It's called Xbox Media Center and it is widely regarded as the best available.
Or for a summarised version, You can the the always enjoyable Register version

Sun has been using the terms open standards and open systems for over 20 years now. They must have been pretty bloody prescient if they started using those terms as a "nefarious" attempt to mislead people into thinking of stuff which wouldn't gain traction for another 15 years.
a dual side dual layer DVD will only hold (correct me if I am wrong) approx. 17 GB
You're wrong. You can have dual layer or you can have dual sided you can't have both. Nine point something GB is the most you can store on a standard dvd
Gosh, there it is in related links. That'll teach me to search for him by name and not by the name of the book he wrote.

The Register has an article explaining how barking, repressive and unworkable this idea is.
During yesterdays product launch Sun's COO Jonathon Schwartz said "We are going to open source ALL of Solaris. We are not going to opensource bits of it and keep other bits private."
That seems like a pretty good reason for believing Sun will opensource it all.

You are completely correct
DVD-18 discs (dual layer & dual sided) are available although rare and expensive.
I still say that using clear plastic with both layers on the same side offers a clear advantage over opaque discs that must be flipped
You're wrong. You can have dual layer or you can have dual sided you can't have both. Nine point something GB is the most you can store on a standard dvd
