    Sneakernet has ALWAYS had much higher bandwidth than the Internet.

    Gets a Gold and a Platinum ratings. TF2 is a big-name app that the wine community really works on supporting. Took me 30 seconds to google "TF2 wine" and look at the results. Try it sometime ;)

    Using big words like "elucidate" doesn't make you right. It just makes you verbose.

    Empty RAM is as useful as not having the memory, because you still have to load off the drive to get data into it. If the data's already there, then it's much more useful. There's no reason to leave available RAM empty, to cache data until there's something else that needs to be there. Anything else is a misuse of memory.

    The problem with Vista is that it REQUIRES all that memory. Using it as it does isn't the problem.

    And then the rest of us gamers either purchase games that work on Linux (I buy most id Software games, even if they aren't that great, simply because they support Linux natively. Same with the UT games.), or buy a console. I love my Wii.

Fewer is never a replacement for less, and vice versa.

    Try again. I'm only getting maybe 10% more CPU use by opening a tab for CNN.com on Firefox here with the latest player, and that's under 64bit Kubuntu, which runs the Adobe flash player in nswrapper.

    If you'd spend slightly more on better hardware, you wouldn't be posting that comment. Yes, data can be ruined by cheap components. A bulletproof filesystem won't protect you against a head crash. The only good thing that the bulletproof filesystem would do would possibly make that cheapo USB adapter of yours not work at all, and force you to buy a proper one.

    Thing is, the "overcompressed" MP3 recorders are good enough. Most people use them to record lecture notes, or a meeting, or just talking to themselves. Those are about the only reasons to really need a portable recorder, and for those uses, mp3 is very good. Just because it's low bitrate doesn't mean it's bad, and just because your DAT recorder had higher quality doesn't mean it's more fit for the purposes it would be used for. Seriously... running and recording? Why would you ever want to do that?

    Except that the "window" was a concept that was known to many OS's before Microsoft got ahold of it. Same case here with Cloud Computing. You should not be able to trademark a name of a generic concept or practice.

    ..."infesting from torrents"? I'd be more worried about the bullshit that they do to the DRM. Those schemes have had a much worse track record than any media I have ever downloaded via bittorrent. Not to mention it locks me out because I don't use Windows, and requires the university to take part. Sounds limiting and stupid to me.

    Besides, looking at their site, their most played list contains 7 Coldplay songs, of 9 total. It looks like most of their music is not A-list, so it's not going to be useful for what most people want. I'll place my bets on them imploding within 2 years. They won't survive without a better library, or government intervention.

    I run Linux on my work laptop, and it tethers fine via bluetooth to my Blackberry 8800, and via USB with the barry suite of tools. I can even back it up and restore all the databases and such. It's not Windows-only if you don't mind working at it a bit ;)

    Empathize with people who are too stupid to do a modicum of research before trying something? Why yes, I do believe I have a problem doing that. Hell, a 5 minute web browsing session would tell you that the PS3 has a Cell processor, which is a PowerPC core. A few more minutes, and you'd realize Wine isn't made for PowerPC's. Game over there. But hey, go ahead and make excuses for someone saying "I'm a fucking retard, and this sucks because the grill I just bought doesn't make my potato salad cold!".

    Funny thing is, Mickey wasn't about to become public domain. He was and always will be a Disney trademark. Shorts like Steamboat Willie were going to go into the public domain (which was a VERY blatant rip off of Steamboat Bill, using a character that was a rip off of a toy Micky Mouse that Disney just marketed better and then sued the originator of the toy. I have yet to see a single thing that Disney created even mostly from scratch. They're scum, and I'm going to do my best to not support them, even though I've got a kid on the way.

    Your options are to learn to program a driver, donate your time, hardware or money to someone who can develop it, or buy a new scanner. There are many that are supported through SANE any more.

    Just as a data point, I've got a Compal laptop and a Lenovo T61, both of which work great with bluetooth under Ubuntu 8.04. I use it for a mouse and to connect to my phone as a modem when traveling.

    Don't forget that a base 12 system has many more factors than a base 10 system. You can't divide 10 into 3rd's or 4th's nearly as easily or accurately (there goes your accuracy bonus). They're just different systems, with different advantages and disadvantages.

    That'd be nice, but there are patents on all kinds of plant genes now, and guess what? The courts have ruled that if an adjacent farmer has some of the modified stuff, and it somehow gets into your field, it's YOUR problem, and you are liable for the infringement of that patent. That's just an end-run around Kroger, but Kroger will buy from whoever is selling, and if that is only a big corporate farm? You've lost your free market.
