I see people that are looking seriously at Ubuntu (and switching) because of Beryl/Compiz because they either a) don't want to get Vista or b) get Vista and aren't happy with it. Combined with the number of people that are switching to Ubuntu from XP, I'd say that it's almost half as many switch to Ubuntu as are happy with Vista. And every day there are more people getting annoyed with Vista and realizing it won't do what they want. Completely anecdotal, but if it's a trend across computer buyers as a whole, I'd expect Microsoft is in some trouble, or at least in for some serious competition and needing to legitimately compete.
vmware baby. Less power usage overall, only "boot up" virtual machines when I need them, and they come up when I want them, and all of it is only dependent on one set of hardware being kept working, rather than 2-3 different machines with different specs, and different hardware failures.
So, what you're saying is that you're tied to Windows, yet unhappy with it, you'd rather have Linux just work with all your stuff but you don't want to do the work to actually switch? So, you want Windows, but you want it for free like Linux is? Not everything is the same in Linux. It's a different system. Many, many things DO switch, though, the rest, well, you'll just have to deal with it and maybe do some lifting yourself if you want the benefits that Linux provides over Windows.
But it prevents you from getting some patches and updates from Microsoft (such as making their shitty OS work properly on a dual-core system), and it's not optional in Vista.
Fuck that. I'll write my own compiler and software, thank you very little. Or just use it as a dumb memory increaser. I'm scared of any rogue processing inside my head... you know that someone will want to add an ability for the government to spy on anything going on in someone's "brain co-processor"
Do you have any proof that's what Vista is doing with the RAM? If it is, I sit corrected. But if it doesn't fill 100% of the RAM with the most recently accessed files or most probably accessed files, I think you're full of shit.
Those things you hear about Feisty are correct, especially if you use supported hardware like an Intel or Atheros wireless chip, instead of that Broadcom shit. I just installed the 64bit beta of Feisty, and EVERYTHING works out of the box, with no fiddling. I tweaked a bit with my NVIDIA configuration, but even then it could have all been point and click.
In other words, a horrible affair. It takes 3x as much work to install a printer, network or otherwise (especially network, having to make a network port and all), in XP as it does in Linux, assuming it's supported in both systems.
That's a popular thing to say. But if no applications are running, what the hell is the OS loading into the RAM that's taking up that space? It should NOT use as much memory as possible, rather, it should use as much memory as necessary. The extra memory should only fill up on repeated file accesses and loading other applications, not just starting up the base system. If the OS is touching that many things on startup, there's something wrong with it. It's not enabling operation of the computer, it's using the computer to operate.
Well hell, after we ousted them Nazi's then drove the USSR into the ground economically, we needed a new enemy. What better foe than one that absolutely, cannot be defeated?
Those car commercials also have at the end "$29,900 as shown". It's not deceptive. Microsoft said that the machines were Vista capable. They didn't add the associative declaimer of "But only works with the shitty, non-advertised version of Vista", and they haven't ever in any of their advertising shown anything that's NOT Aero, unless you specifically look for it. Sounds like deceptive advertising to me.
Microsoft gave them the specs they had to meet to use the "Vista Capable" sticker. That sticker is regulated by Microsoft, not the PC vendors. The blame is being placed squarely where it's deserved.
So, you don't mind if I'm halfway in your seat, or have bad breath I insist on blowing your way, farting, and generally being an obnoxious prick while sitting next to you in a crowded, unexitable area for a long period of time?
It's about respect. I shouldn't have to change MY behavior to make up for YOU being an obnoxious douchebag. Keep the phones off the plane. And if they don't, hell, I suppose I can talk loud enough about nothing to make it a pain in the ass for you to have a thought to yourself, or get a word in to your phone buddy.
Perhaps you should look into a non-energy-hungry machine? I have a 14" laptop that includes a GeForce Go7600 and a Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz, 2GB of RAM, and it runs for 3 hours on battery, when I'm not cranking down on performance stuff. Almost 2 hours watching a DVD.
Because that'll work. Microsoft only listens when money or mindshare is on the line, and the best way to accomplish that is by getting the word out to the people using it. People don't go to Microsoft to ask them if Vista's a good thing for them. They aren't THAT stupid. They go to forums, and neighbors and friends. And that is where we need to get the word out, so Microsoft starts listening.
Whereas when you get it integrated with X11, it can happen in every window manager and everyone wins. Yay!!! (That's the direction this is all heading, which will prevent Metacity/KWin/Fluxbox/Enlightenment/fvwm/xfce/et. al. from splintering and having different implementations of 3D effects)
Sounds like it's time for you to go find a different non-problem to solve:)
That's the nice thing about the modular construction of X11 and so on. That stuff is already done by virtue of the apps not knowing or caring about the window manager, they just do their thing, and the window manager manages the windows.
...I think that pricing-wise, Toyota and Honda are nowhere near comparable to Jaguar and Mercedes. But I'm just rising to a troll here. A Mac may be a Mercedes, but a Toyota is more in-line with PC pricing, relatively speaking.

Yeah. Their consulting services overpromise and underdeliver though. I've seen a number of their projects fail at a big customer's site.

Go watch Ghost in the Shell sometime.

They needed Microsoft's blessing to put that "Vista Capable" sticker on the machine. It most certainly IS their fault.

Dude, I know him! He went to school with me! What a coincidence...

Stupid car analogies...
Yeah, Microsoft users are much better ;)
There are zealots on both sides of the fence. Some of them have more sense than others.
Does it start glowing orange when you run something actually demanding, like FEAR or Quake4?
