1) viruses is the correct plural form of virus
2) Teach your girlfriend responsible computing habits... it's like driving. If you're connected to other people, be aware of the rules. Don't click on the flashy shiny things, no matter how much you want to, etc., etc.
But it's hard for Uzbekistanajaninaians to get funding from US companies that would want to advertise and otherwise co-opt a users computer. Gator and other things are done on-shore.
That's funny. I run Mozilla/Firefox when I'm forced to boot into XP because of work. Doesn't seem to have the problems with allowing software to be installed just by visiting a site.
A lot of the problem are things like "Comet Cursor" and "Bonzi Buddy" that promise some cutesey interface tweak or effect, and then co-opt your computer in the process without being terribly forthcoming about it. If they were forced to have a big icon of, say, that guy in Indiana Jones taking people's beating hearts out, I think that'd go a ways to keeping the ignorant/stupid/whatever among us from installing that kind of crapware.
I feel that I have the right to interfere if your kids are going to grow up to be a burden on society, and cause me problems down the line. It's not live and let live if someone else doesn't live up to their half of the social contract.
Because correlation isn't ever evidence, kids. Those silly 'scientists' are trying to trick you... the earth is flat! Look for yourself, see? The horizon is flat, so the whole world must be.
I'm probably responding to a troll, but people still wonder why I'm such a pessimist...
Because you not only get a chance to make money, but you're entitled to it, and if anything changes and you can't adapt, fuck them, change the law so you're still profitable.
We Americans as a whole have become a bunch of self-important, arrogant, whiny twits, who seem to believe that we are owed something simply because we exist.
DOS is just an acronym for Disk Operating System... if Caldera could/can have DR-DOS without copyright problems, I think Lindos would be pretty unencumbered.
Random thought: Why does everyone say IANAL? Wouldn't it be easier to assume no one is a lawyer unless they say otherwise?
Do you ever question what "boot" means"?
When a linux system lets you log in, EVERYTHING is already started and running. When Windows shows you the desktop, there is still a ton of stuff getting started in the background (or the foreground even) and it's still unusable. Windows doesn't start any faster, it just shows you pretty pictures sooner.
I must be the only person in the world who thinks that OS X is a pain in the ass to work with. But it is. Gets in my way all the time when I want to do anything, half the programs follow Apple's conventions, half don't, my mouse flakes out if it hibernates and then wakes up. Only a restart will restore correct functioning, the "autocomplete" doesn't work if you don't type in correct case, even though the filesystem is supposed to be case agnostic, little things like that.
But it is because people have MS OS's on their computers, so it stands to reason that MS's office product should run on the same OS, right?
It's the leveraging of one monopoly into another... but we've been over this;)
It's because PHB's reiterate "No one has ever been fired for choosing Microsoft", which may be true, because people have come to expect the cockups in MS software.
So they're taking the fight to the legal arena, rather than just, oh, I don't know, making content people actually want to consume?
I'm entitled to and deserve to make money just because I have a business, damnit, not because I do good business.
Before you rant, learn to spell 'extremely', 'ecology' (and you actually probably meant ecosystem or environment, not ecology) and 'particularly'.
You have no idea how ignorant you appear with gross misspellings and bad form.
lol. I think that's why people invented volume licensing... seriously. MFC also holds no candle to Qt in ease of use, stability, features or documentation, and cross-platform development is right out with MFC.
You pay a lot for Qt because it's a very powerful tool.
I'll let you in on a little secret... we have done our main app here in Win32 because MFC is shit. MS doesn't even use it for anything important. We are working on porting to Qt very soon though, because it'll be a lot easier to do cross-platform development, rather than using an API interface toolkit to make a Mac version.
Qt is much, much more than just a windowing system. If it doesn't speed up your development schedule siginifcantly, then you're doing something wrong.
The main thing is that you think it's your right to develop an app using whatever toolkit you like... if you don't like Qt, don't bitch because they cost too much. Use an inferior product that is licensed in a more acceptable manner.
Blame the Windows developers that took advantage of their generosity, making closed apps that were based on the free version of Qt. So they just pulled it with the next version. You can still get the Windows 2.x version of Qt under the GPL.
It's a one year license, with all relevant upgrades during that period. You have it forever, you just don't get the upgrades after that year, IIRC. Per developer, yes, but it's not a per product or anything. That means you can make many, many programs and not be in violation of their license. Many other toolkits have more onerous terms, and are nowhere near as cross-platform.
Trolltech is one of the few companies that does have great support, and I'm actually working with OS X and it's libraries right now... Qt's documentation is much nicer, IMHO. Much less cryptic.
Maybe it's just me, but my Linux machine with dual monitors seems to get me play. People always think that it's soooo cool that you can move the mouse from one monitor to the other.
Well, that, and probably the fact that I have alcohol at my place that I dispense liberally;)
What about when I reinstall the lab (every month or so). They all get to reinstall again. That's stupid
Actually, I'd think that reinstalling the lab monthly is what's stupid. Even our Windows labs at school only get it once a year, and that's to upgrade a lot of stuff mostly, not because they're broken. Maybe you should give your job to someone competent.
I'd be willing to bet the Japanese don't have many very deep, very cold lakes that the wood was at the bottom of. The cold, fresh water is what preserves the wood.
The thing is, anyone can make a screw to a standard. They know what the standard is. MS is the only one that knows what the standards they create actually are, which makes them a monopoly, which in turn lessens their ability to 'innovate'
Of course, this is a troll. Had it been a real post, the AC's head should have imploded by now because of the vacuum between their ears.
Uhh... most 'support' people I've talked to barely know Windows. And almost everyone I've talked to that uses a Mac uses it because it's hip, or because it's so cute. They know even less.
That being said, I don't trust any tech support, ever. I ask them for the relevant information, usually I can convince them that they don't need to go through the script, or if they insist, I just lie to 'em about doing the steps if they don't matter or aren't pertinent to the problem "Yup, done that."

I hate when people do that. I've walked over a few hoods because of people stopping in the crosswalk ;)

If Linux is catching up, why does Samba file sharing under Linux run faster than under NT?

I dunno... I have pockets in my bag that could fit a notebook computer in them...
I should be an IP lawyer.

Perspective shakes faith, and that's all that keeps many people sane, or at least functioning.
