If you need the kind of security for a teller or voting machine, build the chip and drivers for it. It shouldn't ever be part of consumer machines without a full disclosure in big red letters, something like "Operating this computer gives various companies complete control and access to all of your data while preventing you from monitoring such access"
You can get the absolute latest info from the horse's mouth (AKA the ATI dev's that are working on the open source driver) at the Phoronix open-source AMD forums
Notice the word "relative"? It pulls the GPS position of the observer, combines it with the laser's targeting (azumuth, etc.) and distance finding, and then you have the target you're going to hit. Not that fucking hard to understand.
Oh, I totally agree. I am the same way. But that doesn't mean that everyone is like you. There are a lot of people who just program as a day job, and don't care about computing in general. They just figure out the algorithms, and call it good.
Concrete roads don't exist where the military often wants to be. That's why tanks were developed. Get something that goes over terrain better than a tank, and you would have a great defense contract.
Not just that. One of my professors was very well regarded in the algorithms field (can't remember exactly what for) and I remember he asked me to look at his Windows 2000 email machine once. Luckily he did all his important work on Unix, because that Win2K machine was probably the most spy and shitware infested POS I have ever seen. He was wondering why it was going "a little slow". It was at a constant 70%+ CPU usage from the amount of crap running. *shudder*
Someone who is a very good algorithm developer, or even a very good programmer doesn't necessarily have to have the sense to know how to properly admin and maintain a machine.
Software developers rarely manage their own machines. And that's not necessarily a bad thing... I got my degree in Computer Science. Great people to solve a hairy logic problem, not someone you'd want with admin access on any machine you have to support...
Yeah. I'm not worrying about 3D right now in it... I'm using the open-source radeon driver that ships with 9.04 because it has tear-free xv in it. The fglrx/catalyst drivers suck donkey cock at doing video. If you're just looking for a media center or non-3D stuff, I highly recommend sticking with the open source drivers.
On the plus side, ATI is devoting some serious resources to open-source drivers. Take a peek over at the Phoronix forums for some ATI devs posting the latest and greatest, answering questions about what direction 3D is going, and so on. Good stuff, IMHO. I paid for a 4670 since I wanted to support a company that's doing open-source 3D better than Intel.
Seconded. I have a Radeon HD3200 and an Athlon 7750 in my Mythbuntu media center, and I couldn't be happier. Plays HD video like a dream and the total system including 4GB of RAM and 4 1TB hard drives clocks in at around $600 or so, $700 with the nice Antec case I got for it.
Money, however, is a very weak motivational tool (except for the very shallow of mind)
Unfortunately, most of society is made of the very shallow of mind. They aren't altruistic, they won't learn for the sake of learning. Now, how do you convince them to be productive members of society?
Not really, no. You work for a reward, so you can take a paycheck home and pay for things you need and want. Kids go to school and work, and see no reward many times because their parents don't care about education, and only punishment if they fail. Where's the motivation to do more than the bare minimum to avoid getting in trouble?
You can't change crackhead parents, though. You can't force them to be good parents. In light of that, what, you just tell the kids "education is it's own reward" when their mom sells her food stamps in order to get more cocaine? Giving them a real reason to learn and stay in school that they can understand and relate to is important. I didn't say it was an ideal situation. I said that it was a good reaction to the situation that presents itself. Ideally, you should learn for the sake of learning. In practice, people don't give a shit.
But think... why have it so the remote system has to detect the laser light? If you can get an accurate GPS position relative to the position of the person doing the targeting, you can radio that in anywhere. That's a much cheaper, lighter and easier way of "lasing" the target. Just because that's how it's done now doesn't mean that it's the best way.
The problem is, there are a lot of people that don't want to think. The vast majority of people are like that. Why do you think vapid shit like "American Idol" and "Deal or No Deal?" are still getting millions of viewers, and intellectually interesting shows like Firefly where there's an actual plot and dialogue and story get canceled? Shit, I changed channel to "Deal or No Deal" last night as I was surfing and there was a fucking chimpanzee that they had to either agree or disagree with the damn contestant. Next step, "Ass", the movie. Kids will NOT get the intrinsic value of learning from their family life, or from their friends who have the same style of family life. We need to give them some reason to do something other than skate through, and a financial reward for doing well is something they can grasp with their meager attention spans and strong desire to not think hard about anything. Why do you think people go to church? Somebody tells them what to think about God and morality. It's easier that way.
I see you grew up in the suburbs. Where this study was done is called the "inner city", where you don't get beauty pageant moms or football dads. You get crack-ho moms and drug dealing dads and metal detectors on the way into schools. For those kids, this money can be the difference between a life of crime or a life contributing to society in a real job. Which do you want to happen?
Yes. Why don't those stupid 8 year old kids think more than ten years ahead! So what if they can only consciously remember 5 or so years back, and are still emotionally and socially developing, and are hardly able to wait a month for Christmas, much less 10 years for some vague "well-paying job" or something. That's no excuse!
It should be. But the households where these kids come from have drug-addicted parents who sponge off of welfare. The cultures they come from actively eschew education, they think you're some kind of traitor or white-man wannabe if you try to get smart. Arguing about what "should" be is simply an intellectual exercise. This is trying to deal with what "is".
That's the point. If the homework is so easy that you can learn what you need to without doing it, why in the hell would you do it? My boss doesn't pay me depending on how long I spend getting a job done. He pays me on getting the job done. The faster the better. Why are we teaching other lessons in school, to just stick your nose to the grindstone and stop working smart, just work hard?
Well, as long as there's lens flare I guess it'll be alright
I need to get those box sets... ATHF is awesome.

He's asking for how NOT to become a BOFH. The step-by-step guide you posted is kind of the exact opposite of what he's wanting... ;)

I think this is the permalink.
Sounds like the plot of Tank Girl
There was the one scene with Snow White singing The Immigrant Song. Otherwise, I'll agree with you.

So you'd work for no pay, just the satisfaction of a job well done? Sweet. I have a great job for you.
