    And before that, ask this: SHOULD OpenOffice.org do this? Sure you can use a 5 pound sledge to hammer in finishing nails. It's really not the right tool for the job, and you're going to have to work much harder to get inferior results to using the proper tools, a 16oz claw hammer and nail set.

    If you had the correct display to hook it up to, I'm sure most of the current ones could do it at a low resolution. You're just lacking the proper hardware :P

    I tend to make authorized_keys2 read-only, and owned by root. I can change that if I need to add another key, but that's so rare that it's well worth the extra security.

    That's pretty much all the Ubuntu install is. It configures some services for whatever hardware you do have, but that's much higher level than drivers. Tell you what... try an experiment. Take a hard drive with Windows installed, and stick it in a completely different machine. See what happens. Then do the same thing with a hard drive with Ubuntu installed.

    "crap formula"? The new EPA formula is much more accurate given real-world usage, stop and go driving, etc. My Corolla regularly gets within 1-2MPG of the EPA estimated mileage. I've found the same with other new cars. Maybe you just need to stop slamming on the gas and then the brakes? That can easily swing 3-4MPG in a tank.

    Then charge him for a new watch when he wants to know what time it is. There's an acceptable level of ignorance about some things, but you have to understand the other side. You don't go into the mechanic and say "My engine is acting funny" when one of the wheels on your car fell off 5 miles back. Why is that acceptable with computers? It's simple ignorance.

    Computers are magic as far as 75% of the population is concerned. They just know if they do these certain incantations, something they want to happen will happen. When it doesn't, it can't be that they did something wrong, and they don't "troubleshoot", because they only know the steps they're supposed to take. They don't know, and even more so, don't WANT to know why.

    Digital camera? I tried installing the software for my Canon HF100. That flaming pile of shit can't do anything with the files. It will convert them to Youtube format, or play them back from within the software. There was no way I could find to export them to high-def standard media files within that software. I couldn't even get it to DVD quality easily. A bit of research and I have mencoder converting them however I want.
    There are a LOT of things that people just deal with reduced functionality because that's what they're told it does under Windows. More cheap, shitty gadgets work half-assedly under Windows, but if you buy quality hardware, I find it works better under Linux. The problem is getting people to spend $200 instead of $50 for a printer, even though the $200 one will be a much better deal if you use it for more than 3 years.

    VirtualBox takes some twiddling, but I do NetMeeting presentations and such under it on my machine. Using the virtualization CPU extensions on new machines really makes a big difference, as does disabling IO APIC. Tie that in with having "seamless" integration, and I am a big fan of Virtualbox for finally being able to run Windows in a safe environment.

    I use vpnc myself. It will import a configuration file that the Cisco VPN app uses, so it's not that difficult. But it generally requires that you use a Cisco VPN.

    I don't think data will keep doubling in size unless you're starting to talk about corporate data. Really... we're at about the limit of video fidelity as it matters to people. mp3 is still in common use, and how old is it? The files aren't getting any bigger. We have HD video, that's as big as people really want or need. The limits are now starting to be human perception, and not the technology.

    The major downfall for Firewire was that it was very expensive to license for manufacturers. Don't underestimate the prevalence of cheap "gadgets" either. USB works very well as a low-bandwidth interface. Keyboards, mice, webcams... these are the things people use that firewire is not suited for. And since USB can do everything, it has won out. Firewire is better at some things, but USB can do everything than 99% of people need. Most people don't need the real-time transfer rates that Firewire provides.

    That's only if you install the Nvidia drivers from nvidia. Doesn't happen with all graphics cards, and it depends entirely on non-native functionality. So it's not "Windows" that does it, as you say, it's "Nvidia". That is a HUGE difference, as the vast majority of graphics cards are by Intel, and the rest are split between ATI and Nvidia. So at best, you have 25% of computers capable of what you claim.

    They have for a while now. They're ancient WHQL compatible versions, but they definitely ship Nvidia (and ATI) drivers with their OS. You still have to go download the new ones to get good performance, so I personally think that Ubuntu's approach is better, but to each his own. It doesn't do any good to stoop to the opponent's level and lie about their OS, though ;)

    And if anyone thinks I'm trolling, I own one system that boots into Windows. Rarely. Out of 5 machines.

    How many use Macs, though? The vast majority of people don't like change. The people who use Macs either do it because they're Unix types or they want to identify with the culture. Same reason that most people get tattoos, drive certain types of cars, whatever. They just want to do what everyone else that they want to be like is doing. Didn't you learn anything in grade school?

    You can get Ubuntu, or many other distributions, to ship you a disk free of charge, or for minimal cost. Much cheaper than buying a legitimate version of Access. But they aren't buying legit versions, are they?
