    Well, it's commonly used that way now, in the sense that a 1080p television means that the screen has 1080 vertical pixels, not that it accepts 1080p signals (which most lower resolution TVs are capable of).

    If it's not 4:3 (5:4 is okay too) it's not a monitor. Widescreen is for movies and gamers, not computing.

    The thing is, now anytime someone admits they don't have a TV around here, no matter the context, you have the inevitable responses along the lines of "Oh, so you're one of THOSE people". Perhaps The Onion should make an article about that.

    Large companies that have statistically significant numbers of drives have found failure rates to be higher than what they should be given the quoted MTBF numbers from the manufacturers. Google, for example, found an annual failure of around 3% for their drives in that study from a few years back, and they have a very large number of drives. The 100+ year MTBF numbers are complete bullshit.

    Depends on what the 'device' is. An automobile would probably fit that pretty well - expected to last ten years with perhaps one unexpected major repair needed sometime in that period.

    I think it's the controller, as generally the PC doesn't even see the drive at all, as opposed to seeing that there's a drive but being unable to read/write to it which would suggest the actual storage medium.

    Been there, done that. The SSD was fun but I'm going to go stick with hard drives until the technology matures some more.

    You have no clue what you're talking about. Back then, computers had no protected memory and generally any time a program misbehaved it would bring the system down. The old Macs and Amigas crashed hard all the time, just like their Windows counterparts. Granted, without the constant updates and stuff changing all the time, if you got a specific workflow that worked and you repeated it over and over and over it would generally work every time. But don't pretend like they were more reliable because they weren't (I'll give you the calculators though).

    If you're getting a used camera as some have suggested, maybe. With my 4.1 MP P&S camera from 2006 I can definitely see digital artifacts above 8x10. Nowadays the quality of the lens is a bigger factor than the MP count of the camera for anything 35mm or smaller.

    It's a bit odd the way it's accomplished, but basically he wants to be able to send the sound to one device and the video to another device. I don't see anything particularly odd with that given that's how I generally do things, and his set up would work fine if it wasn't for the DRM preventing it. Though working within the rules, my guess is that a sound card with a digital output going to receiver and disconnecting the HDMI cable would probably fix it, however, I can''t say for sure.

    Well the Pentium 60, 66, 75, 90, 100, 120, 133, 150, 166, and 200 were actual chips produced by Intel from the days when the clock speed was part of the processor's name which only makes this new name even more confusing despite the Pentium (P5) line never getting to 350 MHz.

    Your HP desktop workstation is undoubtedly running a Xeon CPU, which seems to be a pretty common solution in the high end workstation market (Dell and Apple do the same thing).

    Which would be fine if that's all they did. But no, they decided later to call a bunch of chips "Pentium Dual Core" which were cut down Core 2 chips and had little to do with the Pentium D except for sharing a socket. Oh, and to make things more confusing they also had the Celeron D at the same time as the Pentium D, except it wasn't even a dual core chip but rather just a cut down single core Precott P4 chip.

    The 8088 is only 29,000 transistors. It would be a hell of a project, but it seems plausible that one could be built out of redstone.

    I can tell at work between the 17-19" monitors hooked up through VGA and those hooked up through DVI. Differences can be subtle, but they are there. Once you get past 1280x1024 it's been pretty obvious, at least to me, if the monitor is using the analog connection. Of course, your video card can make a difference here in terms of how good the analog signal is. Cheap ATI cards are notoriously bad (in my experience) while the old Matrox cards from the P3-era are amongst the best.

    What I want to know is why any new PC would ship with VGA ports anymore, let alone having VGA as the only option. Everything should have been DVI years ago, and anyone wanting to use a VGA monitor could just plug in one of those cheap adapters. Yet I still see VGA ports everywhere. It makes no sense.

    My understanding was that 98SE was supposed to be the end of the line for that lineage of Windows and everything was supposed to move the NT line. However, what was to become XP Home was not ready yet (and would have been too heavy to run on many cheap systems) so they back-ported a bunch of the features they were working on in XP to 98, scrubbed as much of the DOS stuff out as possible, and called it Windows ME as a stopgap release.

    Depends on what you want to call a SUV. Many SUVs nowadays are unibody designs and are little more than cars with bigger tires and an all-wheel drive system. Not surprisingly, the more traditional SUVs on that list like the Escalade have the worse rollover ratings.

    Technically, the Aveo is a Korean-made car with a Chevy badge on it. However, from the looks of it the Koreans only make the thing, otherwise the rest of it is a 100% boneheaded GM design.

    Well, the two years he had a much more friendly congress to work with, he squandered away passing an unpopular health care bill.
